Topic: English as an international language

Grades: 9, 10, 11

Level: Intermediate and upwards

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • extend their knowledge about the English language

  • develop awareness of the importance to study English

  • increase their motivation to study English

Materials and Equipment:

  • blackboard to put the names of the teams and keep the score

  • copies of the Quiz (2-3 for each team depending on the number of students in each team)

  1. Teacher says, "Hello, students. Today we are going to talk about English as an international language. Why is English called an international language?"

Students answer the question. Possible answers: It is spoken all over the world. A lot of people study it as a foreign language. People use it to speak when they do not know each other's native language. Etc.

  1. Teacher says, "We are going to have a competition and find out who knows more about the English language." Teacher divides students into small groups of 5-6 students and says, "Think of a name for your group."

  2. Students think of the names for their groups, and the teacher puts the names onto the board.

  1. Teacher distributes the quiz. Students work in groups. They read the questions, discuss them in their groups, and write the correct answers.

To check students' answers

  1. Teacher asks the first team to read the first question and give their answer. A student from the first group reads the question and says which answer the group has chosen. Teacher listens, but does not say whether the answer is correct or not. Teacher asks other groups to say which answer they have chosen. When all the groups say which answer they think is the correct one, the teacher provides the correct answer and gives one point to all teams that gave the same answer.

  2. The teacher asks the second group to read the second question and say which answer they think is the correct one. Then the teacher repeats the procedure described in step 1 until all the questions in the quiz are checked.

  1. Teacher says, "Count how many points each group has."Teacher says, "Let's congratulate the winners." Students clap for the winners.

  3. Teacher says, "Thank you for the lesson. Hope you have learned something interesting about the English language" and dismisses the students.
