4. Work with the map.

  • Look at the map(slide5) There you can see Great Britain. Who can tell us about the situation of this country, it's capital?

  • P: (Pupil goes to the map and tells about G.B.)

  • There you can see Great Britain which consists of 4 parts: Scotland on the north, England on the south, Wales is near England and the small part of the country is Northern Ireland on the east. All the parts have their capital: England - London, Wales - Cardiff, Scotland - Edinburgh, Northern Ireland - Belfast. (slide6)

  • Speaking about sightseeing in London.

  • I want to tell you about Big Ben. Big Ben is the name of the clock and the bell of the clock tower of the House of Parliament. The clock Tower is 348 feet high. You can hear the sound of Big Ben every hour in London. The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben. So people know the clock as Big Ben.

  • The Tower of London is the most ancient buildings of London. It was founded in the 11-th century by William the Conqueror. For many centuries the Tower has been a fortress, a palace, a prison and royal treasure. Now it is the museum.

The grey stones of the Tower could tell about terrible, sad and cruel events which took place in the walls of the Tower. The ravens still live here as part of its history. There is a legend that if the ravens disappear, the Tower will fall. That is why the birds are carefully guarded.

Trafalgar Square. The centre of London is Trafalgar Square. Some people say it is the most beautiful place in London. In the middle of the square stands a tall column It is a monument of Admiral Nelson. Four bronze lions look at the square from the monument . On the north side there is the National Gallery. There are two beautiful fountains in the square . They are in front of the National Gallery which is one of the best picture galleries of the world. Every day many tourists visit this fine building with tall columns.

Buckingham Palace is the official residence of Her Majesty the Queen and her Family. It isn't open to the public . It is a wonderful building with a monument in front of it which is the Queen Victoria Memorial.

The first monarch who took residence there was Queen Victoria .When her Majesty is in residence the Royal Standards flies over the east of Buckingham Palace.

Sant Paul's Cathedral is the greatest work of England's greatest architect Ser Christopher Wren. It was opened in 1697 but was finished only in 1710, when Wren was almost eighty years old. It's the most striking building in the city today and the third largest church in whole world.

I want to tell you about Tower Bridge. Tower Bridge was opened in 1894. It takes it's name from the Tower of London . The hydraulic mechanism can raise and lower the bridge in about one and half minutes. The covered walkway between the two towers is opened to the public and offers a spectacular view of London.

The Queen's day. When the Queen gets up in the morning , seven people look after her . One starts her bath, one prepares her clothes and one feeds the Royal dogs. She has got 8 or 9 dogs, and they sleep in their own bedroom near the Queens bedroom. Two people bring her breakfast. She listens to Scottish music and reads "The Times". Every Tuesday evening she meets the Prime Minister.
