The Scots made a thistle their national emblem after it had saved their lives.

So, there is a very interesting story about thistle.

The Norsemen intended to conquer & inhabit Scotland.

As the River Tay was the only proper fort in Scotland…

all the Scots gathered to defend their motherland there.

The Scottish people put up a camp at night. They were extremely tired after a long march.

Everybody was sleeping soundly & there were no guards at all to protect the camp.

The Norsemen had a mean desire to rob the Scots' warriors & to kill them that night.

But when one of the Norsemen stepped on the thistle, he cried out loudly.

Thus, the signal was given to the Scots' camp & the Norsemen were put to fight.

3. Праздники Шотландии. Scottish Festivals Grilling

1) Since the Second World War the cultural highpoint of Scottish life has been this famous annual festival that is held during the latter part of August & early September. The citizens of the capital join with the visitors in the pleasure of hearing & seeing great works of art performed by the world's great artists. ___

2) On the Saturday afternoon before the opening of the International Festival each year, they are held. Athletes from all over the world take part in track & field events. Traditionally Scottish dressed in kilts take part in track & field events, such as tossing the caber & throwing the hammer. ___

3) This is a traditional celebration of New Year's Eve. It begins with the arrival of the guests for dinner which follows the ceremony of piping in the haggis (Scotland's national dish). At midnight people sing Auld Lang Syne song & "first-footing" is the final part of the festival.

4) It's a traditional custom & sometimes the steps are made between crossed swords. The participants wear their picturesque Highland dress. This includes a smart jacket worn with coloured buttons & a sporran or purse made of fur, which hangs at the waist. The music is provided by the bagpipes. ____

5) It takes place every August & September. For 90 minutes on five or six nights a week, 600 people perform military music, marching & other spectacular displays under floodlights. On the final night of the display the sky is filled with the bright colours of exploding fireworks. ____
