Прямая и косвенная речь

DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH


Прямая речь(Direct Speech) - речь какого-то лица, передаваемая буквально. Косвенная речь (Indirect Speech) - речь, передаваемая по содержанию в виде дополнительных придаточных предложений:

He says, "I can speak English". (Direct Speech)

He says he can speak English. (Indirect Speech)

Слова автора, вводящие в прямую речь, отделяются на письме запятой. Сама прямая речь заключается в кавычки, которые ставятся сверху перед началом и после прямой речи.

При переводе из прямой речи в косвенную необходимо обратить внимание на время глагола в словах автора. Если этот глагол стоит в Present или Future Indefinite, то в дополнительном придаточном предложении в косвенной речи может быть употреблено любое, требуемое по смыслу время. Если этот глагол стоит в Past Indefinite, то:

Дополнительное придаточное предложение строится в соответствии с правилами согласования времен. Необходимо произвести сдвиг времен в соответствии со следующей таблицей:

Повествовательные предложения в косвенной речи

STATEMENTS IN INDIRECT SPEECH

При переводе повествовательных предложений из прямой речи в косвенную производятся следующие изменения:

Опускается запятая, которой отделяются слова автора, и кавычки, в которые заключена прямая речь. Косвенная речь вводиться союзом «that» (что), который может опускаться в разговорной речи:

He says, «I can speak English».

He says (that) he can speak English.

Если в словах автора употреблён глагол to say без дополнения, указывающего лицо, к которому обращена речь, то глагол to say сохраняется. Если же после to say есть такое дополнение, то он заменяется на глагол to tell, после которого следует беспредложное косвенное дополнение со значением лица, к которому обращена речь. Глагол to tell в прямой речи не употребляется:

He says to me, «I must go home».

He tells me (that) he must go home.

Кроме глагола «to tell» могут употребляться следующие глаголы: to believe, to guess, to remark, to inform, to announce, to agree, to disagree, to approve, to assure, to promise, to doubt, to regret, to express, one`s regret (grief, disappointment).

Время глагола в косвенной речи (т.е. в дополнительном придаточном предложении) сохраняется или изменяется в зависимости от того, в каком времени стоит глагол в словах автора (т.е. в главном предложении). Замена времени производиться в соответствии с правилами согласования времён:

He says to, I came here at 2o`clock.

He tells me he came here at 2o`clock.

He said to me, I came here at 2o`clock.

He told me (that) he had come there at 2o`clock.

Личные и притяжательные местоимения меняются по смыслу:

He says to me, I must find my book.

He tells me he must find his book.

Некоторые наречия времени и места и указательные местоимения заменяются в соответствии с вышеупомянутой таблицей замены наречий и местоимений (если глагол в главном предложении стоит в Past Indefinite):

He said to me, She is coming here tomorrow.

He told me she was coming there the next day.

Общие вопросы в косвенной речи

GENERAL QUESTIONS IN INDIRECT SPEECH

При переводе общих вопросов из прямой речи в косвенную производиться следующие изменения:

Опускается запятая, которой отделяются слова автора, и кавычки, в которые заключена прямая речь. Общий вопрос в косвенной речи вводиться союзами if и whether (ли), после которых следует прямой порядок слов.

Глагол to say в словах автора заменяется на глаголы to ask, to inquire, to wonder, to want to know:

He says to me, Do you speak English well?

He asks me if I speak English well.

Время глагола в косвенной речи (т.е. в дополнительном придаточном предложении) сохраняется или изменяется в зависимости от того, в каком времени стоит глагол в словах автора (т.е. в главном предложении). Замена времён производиться в соответствии с правилами согласования времён:

She says to me, Did you come here at 2o`clock.

She asks me if came here at 2oclock.

She said to me, Did you come here at 2o`clock.

She asked me if I had come here at 2o`clock.

Личные и притяжательные местоимения меняются по смыслу.

Некоторые наречия времени и места и указательные местоимения заменяются в соответствии с вышеупомянутой таблицей замены наречий и местоимений (если глагол в главном предложении стоит в Past Indefinite ):

Специальные вопросы в косвенной речи

SPECIAL QUESTIONS IN INDIRECT SPEECH

При переводе специальных вопросов из прямой речи в косвенную производятся следующие изменения:

Опускается запятая, которой отделяются слова автора, и кавычки, в которые заключена прямая речь. Специальный вопрос в косвенной речи вводиться союзами what, who, whom, whose, why, which, where, when, how, how many, how much, how long, после которых следует прямой порядок слов:

He says to me, Where does your mother work?

He asks me where my mother works.

Глагол to say в словах автора заменяется на глаголы to ask, to inquire, to wonder, to want to know.

Время глагола в косвенной речи (т.е. в дополнительном придаточном предложении) сохраняется или изменяется в зависимости от того, в каком времени стоит глагол в словах автора (т.е. в главном предложении). Замена времён производиться в соответствии с правилами согласования времён:

She says to me, What did you do yesterday?

She asks me what I did yesterday.

She said to me, What did you do yesterday?

She asked me what I had done the previous day.

Личные и притяжательные местоимения меняются по смыслу.

Некоторые наречия времени и места и указательные местоимения заменяются в соответствии с вышеупомянутой таблицей замены наречий и местоимений (если глагол в главном предложении стоит в Past Indefinite):

He said to me Why is she coming here tomorrow?

Повелительные предложения в косвенной речи

IMPERATIVE SENTENCES IN INDIRECT SPEEH


При переводе повелительных предложений из прямой речи в косвенную производятся следующие изменения:

Опускается запятая, которой отделяются слова автора, и кавычки, в которые заключена прямая речь. Дополнительные придаточные предложения ( т.е. слова прямой речи) вводятся утвердительным или отрицательным инфинитивом:

He says to me, Open the window, please.

He asks me to open the window.

He says to me, Don`t open the window, please.

He asks me not open the window.

Глагол to say в словах автора заменяется на глаголы to ask, to tell (в значении «велеть»), to order, to allow, to let, to make, advise.

Личные и притяжательные предложения местоимения меняются по смыслу.

Некоторые наречия времени и места и указательные местоимения заменяются в соответствии с вышеупомянутой таблицей замены наречий и местоимений (если глагол в главном предложении стоит в Past Indefinite):

He said to me, Come here tomorrow.

He asked me to come there the next day.

He said to me, don`t take this book now.

He asked me not take that book then.

1.Read and trans late these sentences. Pay attention to the reporter questions. Transform the reported questions into direct speech.

1. He asked me if Red Square was far from there. 2. She asked him whether that bus would take her to Georgetown University. 3. Mary asked him if he could tell her the best way to the University Library. 4. Bill asked her if she was doing anything special the next day. 5.Ben asked me whether I had visited the Phillips Gallery. 6. She asked me if she might ask my advice. 7. I asked him where he wanted to go that day. 8. Jane asked me what I was going to do next. 9. She asked me at what stop she would have to transfer. 10. 2. Transform direct speech into reported speech.

She asked the policeman, ' Is there a bus from here to New York University?'. 4. Jane asked a young man , ' Is this the right way to the Bolshoi Theater?'. 5. He asked me, 'Will you return next month?'. 6. John asked Peter, ' Have you seen Harlem?'. 7. 'When is your plane leaving?' she asked me. John asked his brother, 'What's the title of the book?'. 9. 3. Translate these sentences.

4.Read and trans late these sentences. Pay attention to the reporter questions. Transform the reported questions into direct speech.

1.She told him to take bus 71. 2.He asked his friend to take him to Greenwich Village the next day. 3. The man told him to go straight ahead for two blocks and then turn left. 4. The teacher told John to go to his seat. 5. Mary asked Jane not to stay in the library that day. 6. She told her son not to put on a coat as it was warm outside. 7. The teacher asked the students to repeat the words after him. 8. Mary asked Ann not to put any sugar in her coffee. 9. She asked Ben not to interrupt her.

5. Transform direct speech into reported speech.

1. 'Please read this text,' said the teacher. 2. Mrs. Brown said, 'John, don't buy any fruit today'. 3. The mother said to her son, 'Please don't stay there long'. 4. We asked John, 'Please read your new poems'. 5. 'Don't pour milk in my tea, please,' Ann said. 6. 'Don't have ice cream, please. You have a cold,' the mother said to her daughter. 7. 'Please repeat these words after me,' the teacher said.

6. Translate these sentences.

1. Преподаватель сказал Джону, чтобы он прошёл на своё место и открыл книгу на 140-й странице. 2. Анна попросила сестру разбудить её в семь утра завтра. 3. Джейн попросила мужа купить фрукты по дороге домой. 4. Полицейский сказал, чтобы он прошёл вперёд три квартала и затем повернул направо. 5. Джон попросил меня никому не говорить об этом. 6. 7. Read these sentences. Pay attention to the sequence of tenses. Translate the sentences into Russian. Change the object clauses into direct speech.

1. John said there wasn't much traffic on their street the previous year. 2. Mary said they were going to Boston for the following weekend. 3. Mr. Brown told me that he'd give a lecture on Hawthorne and Melville the following Thursday. 4. Bill said that David Riley had scored 23 out of 44 points in the previous game. 5. Nick told me that the Georgetown team was as good as the Columbia team. 6. He said he'd finish the translation that night if he had time. 7. The secretary said (that) Mr. Brown was speaking on the other phone. 8. She said she could give me the book for a couple of days. 9. The manager said I'd have to stay there for another week. 10. John told me that Mary's father was a man of wide experience. 11. The librarian told me that I had to fill out those forms. 12. John said he'd checked his suitcase an hour before.

8. Choose the proper adverb or adverbial phrase.

1. Ann said they were going on a trip (next week, the following week) 2. Ben's going to take his camera along (tomorrow, the next day). 3. He told us (that) his favorite team had lost the game (two days ago, two days before). 4. The weather was wonderful (two days before, two days ago). 5. He told me (that) the temperature's rise to 30C (the day after tomorrow, in two days time). 6. The secretary said that Mr. Smith was having a visitor (now, then). 7. She said her husband had been away for about a week (then, now). 8. Peter told me he'd attended Professor Nelson's lecture (yesterday, the previous day). 9. I bought tickets for the cup game (yesterday, the previous day). 10 She said she'd have to go to the department store (next Wednesday, the following Wednesday). 11. He said he'd be able to help me with physics (tomorrow, the next day). 12. He's leaving for a vacation(tomorrow, the next day).

9. Choose the proper tense form of the verb.

1. Jill said the day (is, was) warm and sunny the day before. 2. He says the weather forecast for tomorrow (is, was) sunny? No rain. 3. They hoped that their tea, (won't lose, wouldn't lose) the game. 4. George said he (had already checked out, have already checked out) the books. 5. 10. Translate into English.

a)Она сказала, что- Петр не знает номера телефона Анны.

-Джейн не сможет остановиться у своих друзей на следующей неделе.
