Во-первых, все попытки уловить какой-нибудь сюжет будут напрасны - сюжета просто нет. Есть просто такая вот установка: кошачий бал, где выбирают одну кошку, которая сможет отправиться в рай и переродиться в следующей жизни. Из оригинального бродвейского варианта мюзикла тщательно отобрали самых ярких представителей семейства кошачих. Зрителя ждет знакомство с претендентами, обитателями свалки, которую нагромоздили на сцене. На декорациях делается особенный акцент: кроме вышеупомянутой свалки, где валяются тюки с мусором, колеса, палки и прочий хлам, весь зал утыкан лампочками и обвешан гирляндами. В самые нужные и ненужные моменты они зажигаются, - может, звезды на небе, но что может светиться в помойке? Окурки?

В зале гаснет свет. На экране - луна , мерцают звёзды. Теплой летней ночью, где-то на городских задворках, более напоминающих самую настоящую свалку, Джелликл Кошки собираются на свой ежегодный Джелликл Бал. По его окончании главный кот, Старый Детерономи, должен объявить собравшимся имя кошки, которая в эту ночь отправится в свое последнее путешествие, на Heaviside Layer (кошачий рай, надо полагать), чтобы дать возможность переродиться новой кошачьей душе. Звучит фонограмма музыки Л.Уэббера, на сцену выползают кошки и исполняют песню « The Invitation to the Jellicle Ball». По окончании музыкального вступления в зале зажигается свет и кошки приглашают всех на кошачий бал и «поют» эту песню речитативом.

The Naming of Cats

The naming of cats is a difficult matter
It isn't just one of your holiday games.

When I tell you a cat must have three different names

First of all, there's the name that the family use daily
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James
But I tell you a cat needs a name that's particular
A name that's peculiar and more dignified.

But the cat himself knows and will never confess.

Кошки с презрением представляют ещё один персонаж, Гризабеллу. Когда- то это была гламурная, всеми уважаемая кошка. А теперь Гризабелла- потрепанная кошка, которая страдает от одиночества и меланхолично вспоминает о молодости.
