The theme of the lesson: Scotland

The objectives of the lesson:

- to develop of the vigorous activity of each schoolboy during all lesson, maximal increase of time speaking of each schoolboy.

- to realize this task the group form of job allows.

- to promote also formation of skills and efforts of independent job of the pupils in mastering by foreign language.

- to develop pupils' geographical outlook, their abilities of speaking reading, writing and thinking;

- to increase their word-stock and teach them to know more about the country;

- to teach pupils to love their Motherland and respect the culture and traditions of other countries.

Visual aids used at the lesson: interactive board, cards, the map of the UK.

The outline of the lesson:

  1. The beginning of the lesson. (greeting, etc)

  2. New theme of the lesson: The United Kingdom.

  1. Teacher's short information about Scotland and the motto of the lesson.

  2. Introduction of new words according to the new text "Scotland".

  3. Reading of the text and work with it. Exercise 25 page 179

  4. Answer to the questions on that text

I. Teacher's explanation.

Look at the map of the UK. As you know the UK is situated in the north - west coast of Europe and it consists of 4 parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. As we said before each country has its separate national identities, variations in culture and tradition. Each country has its own flag, symbol and places of interests.

The theme of our today's lesson "Scotland". Let us brush up our knowledge of this country. So the motto of our lesson is "The more we know together, the happier we are". The best and the cleverest pupil of today's lesson will take the ticket to Edinburgh.

Listen and learn to read the proper names;

Hilands ['hailәndz], Lowlands ['lәυlәndz], Glasgow ['gla;zgәυ], Edinburgh ['edinbәrә], Athens ['æθinz], Princes ['prinsiz], the Conangate['kænәngeit], monument ['monjυment].

Now, before reading, the text about the, Edinburgh let's take the new words.

Teacher: Yes, you are right. And now children! You have to divide into two groups.

I'll give these geometrical figures squares and triangles you must be divided in them.

I'll explain you how to work in groups at first you'll read the text, explain its title to each other. Then put to each other questions on it if you don't know the answers to some questions read the text again and ask for help of your group's members. Do you know what qualities should have your groups? You must fill the diagram that describes your groups' qualities.

They'll divide into groups then they you'll read the text after that they must explain its meaning to each other. One pupil among them should control their work as a leader and give their marks at the end of the lesson. The teacher can also control pupils' work.

- Scotland is a country in the United Kingdom to the north of England.

  1. - What is its symbol?

- Its symbol is a thistle; its patron saint is St. Andrew.

  1. Into what parts is Scotland divided geographically?

- The country is divided into Highlands and Lowlands.

  1. - What is its capital?

Edinburgh is a capital of the country.

  1. - What can you say about Glasgow?

- Glasgow is a heart of industry. It is a centre of business and trade. It is very busy, prosperous, dirty in some parts and smart in others, it is beautiful and ugly with its port and busy streets.

  1. - What can you say about Edinburgh?

  • Edinburgh is rather cold but attractive, very proud but friendly and has a great past. It is known as the Athens['æθinz] of the North. It is an ancient city and if you walk around it, you can feel history at every step. The most interesting parts of the city are the Old Town and the New Town.

  1. - What is the most picturesque part of the Royal Mile?

- it is Cannongate, which gives a good idea of what the Old Town was like.

  1. - Which is the most beautiful street of the New Town?

  • Princes Street is the most beautiful street of the New Town. It has a lot of gardens on one side and it is also Edinburgh's shopping centre.

I V. Exercise 28 page 183 - in a written form. Work in pairs. Imagine that one of you is a visitor to Edinburgh. He or she wants to get some information about the city. Your partner answers the questions. Find out the answers, answer them then write down.


V.CONCLUSION:

It's a proverb: East or West, Home is best.

Teacher: How do you understand the meaning of this proverb? You may give its meaning in any language you like.

(Pupils one after another give the same proverbs in 3 languages)

Teacher: You are very quite right. Very nice. As you see, where we are in England or in Scotland there is no place like our native Motherland. We must be proud of our country and appreciate its national identities.
