Teacher: - We can see how English people practice idioms and how we can give Russian equivalents. We are going to listen to report about idiomatic peculiarities of the English language.

Report:

-English is highly idiomatic. There are a great number of expressions, proverbs, jokes, and so-called nursery rhymes, which go back to the past of the people, to their traditions and humour.

The book "The Mother Goose's Melodies" was published in England in the middle of the 18-th century. Some English melodies are very popular in Russia in the translations of Chukovsky and Marshak. There are a lot of publications of the book "Nursery Rhymes of England" and tricky characters of them. Humpty-Dumpty and the old woman who lived in a shoe is very popular in many countries.

- Humpty-Dumpty sat on a wall

Humpty-Dumpty had a great fall

All the King's horses, all the King's men

Couldn't put Humpty together again.

  • There was an old woman who lived in a shoe

She had five children who had much to do

One child was cooking from morning till night

One child was washing black clothes and white

One child was mending the clothes that were torn

One child was planting potatoes and corn

The last one was dancing and singing a song

The children were happy and merry and strong

-The variety of idioms add much to the richness and expressiveness of modern language. Many idioms are connected with different animals to characterize a person in this or that way. Besides they enlarge knowledge of person from different fields: Christian Religion, Greek Mythology, Ancient Rome. They are international. As for English literature, there are Burns, Byron, Shelly, Milton and so on.

Teacher: - So, it will be interesting for you to see the meanings of different idioms in our tasks and dialogues. Will you name the next task English idioms with Russian equivalents.
