INTERPRETING WORKS OF ART

11 F.

AIM: * to develop critical thinking

*to learn to analyze and interpret works of art making use of suppositions

  1. WARMING UP. Complete Cloze Game.

  1. GREAT MYTHS OF ART.

  1. Memory work.: To understand pictures of all kinds belonging to different cultures spectators should see eye to eye with painters that is to realize the principles they believe in and stick to.

  1. Add a sentence of your own commentary to the memorized one.

  1. Text-books, p.108-109. Look at the pictures of the Tower of Babel which were created by the artists from different times.

    • Read the Info-text to acquire new information about them.

    • Listen to the description of the pictures and do assignment 3 A (mark whose painting is described)

    • Summarize the description of the picture which appeals to you, make use of the suppositional expressions:

There

Might (be)

A monument to man's folly

Could (be)

A keen observer of life

Методическая разработка урока по теме Искусство 11 классThe artist

Must (be)

A (no) sense of massive chaos

Is likely to

So many elusive and evocative details

The picture

Is unlikely to

A documentary record of life

Might equally well be.. or

Have a transcendent vision of the Bible's legend

The composition

Seems (to be)

Have an extremely profound knowledge of the material

Doesn't seem

Tiny figures trying to communicate

The masterpiece

Looks

Possess ideal proportions

arouses

Convey thought-provoking ideas

E.g. Escher might equally well have an extremely profound knowledge of the Bible's legend or interpret it in his own manner.

  1. INTERPRETING ONE AND THE SAME PICTURE OFTEN SEEMS TO BE AN AMBIGUOUS AFFAIR BECAUSE EVERITHING DEPENDS ON THE PERSON'S TASTE, OPINION AND THE BACKGROUND INFORMATION WHICH he/she POSSESSES ABOUT THE WORK OF ART. Look at the portrait of Mona Lisa, read its description and fill in the table:

FACTS

SUPPOSITIONS

OPINION/IMPRESSION

We never seem to fathom Mona Lisa's elusive power. The picture represents an exceptionally banal portrait painted in almost invisible brushstrokes. Leonardo da Vinci might have been a shrewd psychologist and a keen observer conveying the transient mood of the sitter. The woman might equally well be charming and sincere or cunning and acrimonious with her enigmatic smile. In any case it must be the most transcendent of da Vinci's paintings, as it appeals to the viewer's emotions, rendering the subtle character and undermining the stereotypes of art perception.

# Express your own opinion, analyzing the picture and making suppositions.

H/w: write an essay on Oscar Wilde's quotation " ART IS A VEIL RATHER THAN A MIRROR"
