Level: elementary

Form: 5B

Topic: Inventions

Aims:

  • to develop speaking skills =>communicative skills;

  • to develop listening skills.

Purposes:

  • to sum up grammar "The Past Simple Tense" (affirmative, interrogative and negative forms), to revise irregular verbs;

  • to sum up what they have learned about inventions;

  • to give students opportunity to practice speaking;

Objectives:

Students will be able:

  • to understand the words concerning inventions when hearing and to use them in sentences orally;

  • to speak about inventors;

  • to built up sentences in Past Simple, to talk about past actions, to make questions and negative sentences in Past Simple;

  • to comprehend and produce necessary vocabulary for the topic;

  • to comprehend a simple conversation;

  • to learn more about cities and places of interest.

Materials/aids: flash cards, cards with irregular verbs, posters describing emotions and weather, cards with famous people, cards with cities and places of interest, a DVD-player, a TV set, a tape recorder ,a blackboard.


  1. Presentation. Warm up.

- Greeting; phonetic drills: (2 min.)

How do you feel today?

What is the weather like today?

What did you do in the morning?

What did you do yesterday in the evening?

- Irregular verbs revision (cards) (2 min.)

2. Practice.

- Grammar revision "The Past Simple Tense" (affirmative, interrogative and negative forms) (3 min.)

  • Practicing the usage of Past Simple, making sentences ( students look at the cards and make sentences in Past Simple describing the cards); (3 min.)



  • Playing a game. (Guests name any 9 nouns to fill in a criss-cross field, than pupils who are divided into two teams make sentences in Past Simple trying to win the game) (4 min.)


  • Practicing the usage of the verb TO BE in the past forms (WAS/WERE) (students look at the cards with cities and make sentences, i.e. When I was in Moscow, I saw the Red Square)(3 min.)


  • Practice making interrogative sentences(general and special questions) and negative sentences:

A) Playing a game with flash cards (students are shown 7-8 cards with different objects for a few seconds and they try to memorize them, after that one of the students take a card without showing it to the class and pupils try to guess the object asking questions: (5 min.)

  • Did you buy a…?

  • Yes, I did./No, I didn't.

B) Students make general and special questions to the sentences given below:(4 min.)

Ann went to school on foot yesterday.

My parents visited London last summer.


  • Active pause: singing a song "Head and Shoulders" and dancing (2 min.);

  • Listening. Pupils open their Workbooks, p.32, ex.2 and match the pictures to the names while listening. They try to remember the inventions and inventors (4 min);

  • Video episode. Pupils are supposed to answer the questions about inventors (3 min.);

  • Practicing monologue speech. Students are shown the photos of Robert Louis Stevenson and Elvis Presley and they tell about their lives. (5 min.)

  • Singing a song "Days of Old" (3 min.)

  • Explaining the home task. Ending the lesson. (2 min)

H/t: Modular Revision, preparation for the test.

Summary and conclusion

Age-related peculiarities of the group were taken into consideration. The lesson was structured logically (from simple things to more difficult). Active games, music and dancing were involved. Handwriting practice was included.
