THE PAST SIMPLE

I. Put the verbs in brackets in the Past Simple.

II. Give three forms of the verbs.

Buried Treasure

( an old tale)

There was an old man who ( to have) a large garden with many fruit trees.

He ( to have) three sons too. They ( to be) strong, but very lazy. They ( to help)

him very little in his work. Every morning before the sun ( to be) hot the

old man ( to begin) to work in the garden. And every afternoon he (to have) a rest in the garden under a tree.

There ( to come) a time when the old man (can) no longer work among his trees, because he ( to be) very, very old.

One day his three sons ( to gather) in his room to hear the reading of the will.

"I leave to my sons my garden and the treasure which lies buried there."

The three sons ( to look) at one another. "Treasure!" they ( to exclaim). "Treasure buried in the garden! If we hire others to dig there, they may steal our treasure from us. We must work in the garden until we find it."

So the sons ( to divide) the garden into three parts and ( to begin) to work harder than ever before. The dug from one end of the garden to the other end, but they (can) not find the treasure.

That year, however, the fruit trees ( to bring) so much fruit, that when the three

sons ( to sell) the fruit they ( to get) much money. It ( to seem)to be a fortune.

When they( to divide) the money, one of them said, "Indeed, our digging has brought

us a treasure. Our father ( to be) very wise."

And so each year their digging ( to bring) them a treasure.
