Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the USA, now
it is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November
and people have a four-day weekend. On this day people
visit friends and relatives. Customary dinner always
includes roast turkey and pumpkin pie.
In 1621, the year after the Pilgrims arrived in
Massachusetts, in their search for religious freedom,
there was very terrible winter, winter of great
starvation. Nearly half of Pilgrims died and they turned
for help to Native Americans, their neighbors. Native
Americans taught them how to plant corn and other
crops. The harvest was wonderful and the Pilgrims gave
thanksgiving feast with the four wild turkeys. William
Bradford proclaimed a day of Thanksgiving.
On this day American families get together and have a Thanksgiving dinner. People give thanks to God for their good fortune and for being together. Native Americans gave Pilgrims a helping hand and the Pilgrims paid back kindness to kindness. Thanksgiving teaches us to help each other and to be good friends. Thanksgiving makes people kinder, sincerer, and more friendly.
Thanksgiving traditions
Americans stay at home with their families and eat big dinner.
Of course, like in many other holidays there are some symbols
of Thanksgiving. All people give thanks together for the good
things that they have. In this spirit of sharing, civic groups and
charitable organizations offer a traditional meal to those in need,
particularly the homeless.
On most tables throughout the US, foods eaten at the first
thanksgiving have become traditional. Turkey, corn, pumpkins and
cranberry sauce are symbols which represent the first
Thanksgiving.
Many people attend religious services on Thanksgiving Day, and
watching football games-sometimes in person but usually on
television-is also a popular Thanksgiving Day activity.
Though Americans like Thanksgiving's Day they do not give
presents on it at all.
It is fantastic that in the USA there is such a great holiday as
Thanksgiving Day because people should know how to say "Thank
you for all!" or "Forgive me for all, please!". On this day family
should forget all theirs misunderstandings and share theirs
problems and certainly have fun! It is very important that it is
celebrated in each family. So we should always thank God for living!
