I N T R O D U C T I O N

Travelling nowadays has become an important part of modern life. Millions of people all over the world travel about their own countries and to foreign lands as well. People travel to visit natural destinations such as seas, lakes, rivers, mountain ranges, deserts and so on. It's always interesting to discover new things and other ways of life, to meet different people, taste different food, examine various architectural styles, visit museums and picture galleries. It's common knowledge that travelling is a key to understanding other cultures and a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the world we live in.

I guess everybody will agree that travel broadens the mind. That's true. Getting out of the place where you always live, then going to an unfamiliar place will be a kind of unforgettable experience in your life.

So this is our today's topic: travelling. But not just travelling as it is. In our virtual journey I intend to suggest you something unusual. Alongside with such popular tourist destination as Great Britain we are going to explore some places which are really mystical, occult and weird and can be worthily called the Mysteries and Wonders of the World. Just imagine that you're having a real tour and let's start. Choose the most fascinating place and enjoy your travel. But don't forget that your main purpose is to learn about this place as much as possible and to present successfully the received information to your mates. Some supplementary materials such as a dictionary, exercises and short tests, audio texts and video fragments will help you to achieve your aim. Good luck!

- to watch short videos and to sum up some information about the places you've seen

Not to forget about everything you'll hear and see you'll also need a Travel Notebook (see the Supplement). In this notebook you must put down all useful and interesting information necessary for your work. So choose the point of your destination and come on!

STONEHENGE

Stonehenge... For thousands of years one of the world's great archeological enigmas. The unraveling of that mystery begins with some fundamental questions not the least of which is: what did the people, who built Stonehenge, believe in? The structure of this scale of antiquity almost certainly had a major spiritual significance to those who'd built it.

Construction began on a Stonehenge site over 5 thousand years ago. It continued all in all of 1500 years in 3 distinct phases. Some of the huge stones were transported hundred of miles from the Preseli Mountains in Wales to the monument site on Salisbury Plain in south-west England. But the mechanics of Stonehenge don't help to explain what drove a community to expend so much time and energy in building such a structure. Whatever its purpose - Druids' temple, Megalithic planetarium, temple of the human sacrifice - whoever built it, meant business. "From that moment it was conceived: Stonehenge had a meaning to the people who'd built it".

In a popular imagination the connection between Stonehenge and the Sun worship has its roots in the pre-Christian Druid movement. So did the Druids build Stonehenge as a spectacular temple to the Sun? It seems highly unlikely. The first record of the Druids is no earlier than the third century BC, over a thousand years after Stonehenge was at its zenith. It's clear that if the Druids ever had anything to do with Stonehenge, it was after finding it in its current abandoned state.

"This is a place of power. Any place that is used for a long time for a spiritual purpose or for any other common purpose built up its own power. And this is really the spiritual centre of England".

THE GRAND CANYON

Each year millions of people come to visit the most astonishing landscape in the world - the Grand Canyon. As much as a mile deep, 277 miles long and up to 18 miles across - its breathtaking beauty and scope inspire and overwhelm. The Grand Canyon is the deepest and oldest layer of the Colorado Plato, a story of erosion millions of years. In more ways than one it's a place where history meets the present.

The Grand Canyon National Park founded in 1919 is located completely in the state of Arizona. Its 1900 sq. miles host nearly 5 million visitors every year.

This is a masterpiece shaped by erosion and sculptured by a tool of immense power - a river.

It is called the Real Colorado by early Spanish explorers - the first Europeans to discover it, and by us - simply the Colorado.

One of the most challenging Grand Canyon adventures is a descent on a mule back into the Canyon's depth. This is the Bright Angel Trail Mule Ride, a guided two-day trip. To trail the ride you must be in a good physical condition, over 4 feet 7 inches tall and weigh less than 200 pounds. It's a dizzying descent almost a mile down deeper and deeper to the Earth's geological history which is written in layers of rock traceable back almost 2 billion years. The location offers glorious view of the Canyon. It's a journey back in time.

As in most of our national parks hiking is our favourite sport. The hikers won't need special equipment, just a backpack and plenty of food and water. Others expect more for an overnight camping. But all hikers must be in a good physical condition. Long distance hikers experience dramatic changes in climate. On the rims it may be brisk like in Canada in autumn, while in the Canyon's floor it's as hot as in Mexico during the summer.

Halfway between the North and the South rims there is Navajo Bridge and lease ferry, starting point for one of the most adventurous trips in the world. There is no better way to become personally acquainted with the Great Colorado River than rafting it on a raft. You and your companions are the skilled captain's crew. These river adventures are long, from 3 lasting days with calmer waters at first and stops along the way. Then the waters are rougher, swimming is risky. The river is alarmingly cold. The great wild river takes off.

These rocks and cliffs, beauties and gorges are ever changing. The Grand Canyon is never finished. As long as the wind blows and the rain falls and the sources of erosion gride and buffer endlessly - this Canyon, of God's creation and Mother Nature's travail, will always be a wonder of the world.

Australia has long been a little mount for most of the people of the world. This is probably due to its geographical position. It is an island continent lying south-east of Asia. It covers an area the same as the USA and is more than 30 times larger than Great Britain.

Australia is the flattest of all continents. Only 5 per cent of the land is very high. Its most significant mountain chain is the Great Dividing Range. The eastern part of the chain is known as the Australian Alps. Mount Kosciusko in the Australian Alps is Australia's highest point.

There are a few rivers and lakes in Australia. Australia's best known river is the Murray but the longest is the Darling.

Most of Australia's areas are desert country. In fact, the Great Sandy and the Great Victoria deserts rank among the largest deserts in the world.

4 out of 5 Australians live in the eastern state cities - Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra. Add to these two more - Adelaide in South Australia and Perth in Western Australia.

AUSTRALIAN ABOROGINES

I am a traditional aborigine. I live in Australia. Aborigine means first inhabitant. Some Aborigines live on the coast near the sea, but my people live in the hot, dry desert near the middle of Australia.

Aborigines came to Australia over 40,000years ago. Some people think we came in boats, and others think there was a land bridge we walked across. No one really knows for sure. My people did not read or write, so we have no history book to study. We kept track to our past through songs and stories. In that way we remember our past and give meaning to our lives and culture.

We believe in what we call Dreaming. This is when spirits created the world and gave it life. Then the spirits went to live in a rock or a tree. These became sacred to the Aborigines. They are preserved, guarded and honoured.

Every Aborigine had one main job. That was to find food. Both men and women were expert hunters, and everyone had to know what was safe to eat and what was not. We were always careful not to over-pick fruits and vegetables. We left some to grow for the next year. Aborigines spent over three- quarters of the day gathering food.

Our weapon consisted of a wood spear, a club and a boomerang. We did not have any metals. Our weapons were made of wood and rock.

We did not build houses because we were constantly moving to new places hunting for food. It was so hot that we needed very little shelter. We started a fire by rubbing two sticks together, and we use d this fire to cook our food and keep us warm if the nights got chilly. We did not wear clothes because we had no need for them. It very seldom rained where we lived, but even after a rain we dried very quickly and never got sick from wearing wet clothes.

Water was the most important thing we needed to live. Aborigines became expert in finding water in the driest land. We knew how to dig to find water, and we also knew how to find water in bodies of frogs, in hollow logs and in roots of trees.

We were a good people. We looked after our old people and we loved our children. We taught our young people what they needed to know to survive in our land. After a hunt we shared equally with everyone. We had our songs, stories and spirits. We had artists who carved and drew. Ours was a hard and good life. This was the way it was.

People from Great Britain came to Australia over 200 years ago to take our land. They had diseases that killed many Aborigines. We fought for our land but we were defeated. Today there are few true Aborigines left. We have left the old way to work in cities and on large sheep and cattle ranches. Our children now attend school. We have changed and survived, just as we have survived over 40,000 years in the deserts in Australia.
