Social work embodies a set of core values and principles. It is committed to the rights of the child; respects the equality, worth and human rights of all people, and their individuality, privacy and dignity; and challenges discrimination and prejudice. Its knowledge base, drawn from relevant academic disciplines, is informed by the experience and expertise of people using services, developed through research and tested in practice.

international affairs международные отношения

Clarification of goals постановка целей

TASK 2. Read and translate the text

Negotiation is a method by which people settle differences. It is a process by which compromise or agreement is reached while avoiding argument and dispute.

In any disagreement, individuals understandably aim to achieve the best possible outcome for their position (or perhaps an organisation they represent). However, the principles of fairness, seeking mutual benefit and maintaining a relationship are the keys to a successful outcome.

Specific forms of negotiation are used in many situations: international affairs, the legal system, government, industrial disputes or domestic relationships as examples. However, general negotiation skills can be learned and applied in a wide range of activities. Negotiation skills can be of great benefit in resolving any differences that arise between you and others.

It is inevitable that, from time-to-time, conflict and disagreement will arise as the differing needs, wants, aims and beliefs of people are brought together. Without negotiation, such conflicts may lead to argument and resentment resulting in one or all of the parties feeling dissatisfied. The point of negotiation is to try to reach agreements without causing future barriers to communications. In order to achieve a desirable outcome, it may be useful to follow a structured approach to negotiation. For example, in a work situation a meeting may need to be arranged in which all parties involved can come together.

The process of negotiation includes the following stages:

  1. Preparation

  2. Discussion

  3. Clarification of goals

  4. Negotiate towards a Win-Win outcome

  5. Agreement

  6. Implementation of a course of action

Informal Negotiation

There are times when there is a need to negotiate more informally. At such times, when a difference of opinion arises, it might not be possible or appropriate to go through the stages set out above in a formal manner.

Nevertheless, remembering the key points in the stages of formal negotiation may be very helpful in a variety of informal situations.

In any negotiation, the following three elements are important and likely to affect the ultimate outcome of the negotiation:

  1. Attitudes

  2. Knowledge

  3. Interpersonal Skills

TASK 3. Translate the following sentences from Russian into English.

Dynamic Relationships

Be it personal or professional, one is bound to build relationships in the workplace. However, the catch is how one handles them, as they can lead to success as well as downfall of an individual in his career. Here are a few aspects about relationships that one should consider so that bonding with a colleague does not boomerang.

Your performance at the end of the month may depend upon the targets achieved. However, it's not just your skills that decide your success. Your personality and the way you are perceived as a person in your workplace goes a long way in getting you the opportunities that you need to prove yourself and also to succeed in those. The following are a few tips that would help one in maintaining a positive image in the workplace:

Be Professional but Approachable: Obviously you are at your office to work. Make clear to everyone that work comes first for you. However, don't be aloof. If others need help and you can help them, make that extra effort. However, stay away from delving into things that are of a very personal nature. This is a good way of building relationships that will stand one in good stead.

Set Your Boundaries: Being approachable may be taken by many, that they can come to you with any problem that they have. As long as the problems are professional, it's okay. However, be careful of the personal ones. Give a clear hint to your co-workers that you are approachable, but only up to a limit. Maintain your professional ethics. Guard your privacy carefully and stay away from personal affairs of others. Striking the right balance between professional and personal aspects is the mantra for success at workplace.

Stay Away from Gossip: Workplace communication is desirable. However, office gossips are very harmful for both an organization as well as for its employees. Indulging in gossip is good time - wasted. If ever a talk steers towards gossip, try to turn it towards a positive direction. If that does not work, politely excuse yourself out of the conversation.

Know Who to Trust: Despite having said about maintaining a professional relationship in the workplace, everyone needs to share his/her thoughts that may not be absolutely of a professional nature. Each one of us has a friend in our workplace with whom we share a close bond. However, before deciding on such a person, be sure that he is not one who would show sympathy to you and then talk about you behind your back. There are a lot of people in the workplace who wait on opportunities to tarnish the image of their co-workers for personal gain.

Volunteer for Extra Responsibilities: Some unexpected work (by this I mean only those that are of professional nature) always comes up at the workplace. If you think you can solve the problem, volunteer to help, even if that means that some extra efforts have to be made. However, be sure that the extra responsibility won't hurt your targets. This attitude will surely make your seniors perceive you as an asset for the organization.

Romantic Relationships

A recent survey has shown that almost one-third of the working population in the United States is in a relationship with their co-workers. Well, this are certainly inevitable. But how safe or worthwhile are they? The first drawback of such relationships are the effects on both the parties in case such a relationship fails. Workplace break-ups can be quite disruptive, personally, no doubt about that. But what raises a grave concern is that such break ups can be harmful for one's career as well. There are a number of instances when one has had to give up a lucrative job because of break up with a colleague. No wonder then, that most seasoned professionals always advice to keep professional and personal lives separate.

TASK 3. True or false?

1. It's just your skills that decide your success.

2. Work is the first thing in the office.

3. Try to be alone.

4. A good way of building relationships is to stay away from delving into things that are of a very personal nature.

5. Don't follow your professional ethics.

6. Office gossips are very good for both an organization as well as for its employees.

7. If you think you can solve the problem, volunteer to help.

8. You shouldn't keep professional and personal lives separate.

TASK 4. Answer the questions

  1. What do you think about relationships in the Workplace ?

  2. What is the main reason of professional?

  3. You need to give a clear hint to your co-workers that you are approachable, but only up to a limit, don't you?

  4. How can you explain the word "gossip"?

  5. Do romantic relationships at the office influence on your job? How much?

TASK 5. Give your meaning to the topic "How can you create good relationships in the team"

TEXT 5
Business correspondence

TASK 1. Learn the necessary information about business correspondence.

Приветствие (обращение)

Если имя адресата неизвестно, то лучше всего начать письмо:

Dear Sir, Dear Sirs, Dear Madam

Dear Professor, Dear Mr.President.

Если адресат Вам знаком, гораздо предпочтительнее обращаться к нему по фамилии:

Dear Mr.Smith, Dear Mrs.Smith, Dear Miss Smith.

Приветствие всегда отделяется запятой, но в американской деловой корреспонденции часто можно встретить двоеточие

Dear Mr. Smith: .

"Dress code".

Probably everyone heard such term as "dress code". When you get an invitation to somewhere with important people usually there is mentioned a dress code on the invitation, such as "white tie", "black tie", "creative black tie". So what do these names tell us about requirements for clothing?

White tie

"White tie" dress code or in other words "Ultra formal" invitation requires women wear long (floor length) gowns. Men need to wear black tailcoat which matches with trousers (with a single stripe of satin or braid in US; in Europe or UK - with two stripes). Men also need to wear white pique wing-collared shirt, white vest, bow tie, white or gray gloves, black socks and black patent shoes.

Black tie

"Black tie" in other words means formal clothing. Men need to wear black tuxedo, formal (pleated front) white shirt, black bow tie, black socks and shoes, no gloves. Women have to wear formal long evening dress, short cocktail dress or dressy evening separates.

Black tie optional

A "black tie optional" gives two options for men - wearing a tuxedo (as "black tie") or dark suit, white shirt and conservative tie. A "black tie optional" means that clothing have to be formal. Women can choose between long evening gown, cocktail dress or dressy evening separate.

Creative black tie

"Creative black tie" gives room for interpretations of formal wear. Man can wear more modern clothes with tuxedo - trendy items, such as a black shirt or a matching colored or patterned bow tie and cummerbund. This matches with dressy black leather shoes and black socks. Woman can choose from formal evening gown or short cocktail dress and any of these two can be accessorized with a feather boa, colorful shawl or colorful jewelry. Sometimes, theme parties set "Texas Black Tie" dress code or any other variation of Creative Black Tie. Then a man can wear a tuxedo with boots, and woman can choose a long dress paired with Southwestern style jewelry and belt.

Semiformal

Semiformal dress code or in other words "After Five" tells you that it's not required tuxedos or long evening dresses. Men can wear dark business suit, matching vest, white shirt, and tie. Ladies can choose from short afternoon dress or long dressy skirt and nice top.

Business formal

Business formal is the same as semiformal for men, but some differences are for women. They should wear more tailored dressy suit or not very sexy or slinky dresses.

Festival attire

Festival attire is mainly holiday's time parties with informal or semiformal mood. Women need to wear short cocktail dress or long dressy skirt with top or even dressy pants outfit. Women can have some sparkle look on clothes. Men should wear seasonal sport coat or blazer any color you like, open-collar shirt and holiday-themed tie.

Dressy casual

Dressy casual is dressed-up type of casual looks. Men could wear trousers with open-collar shirt, and sport coat. For women dressy pants look is required. Street length dress, skirt and dressy top or dressy pants outfit.

Business casual

Business casual for men tells to wear seasonal sport coat or blazer with slacks or khakis and matching shirt. Women need to avoid spaghetti straps and décolleté. Its good to wear skirt, khakis or slacks with shirt, knit shirt or sweater.

Sport casual

In companies where technology is important, people with an engineering background (техническое образование) can also rise to the top. TASK 2. Read and translate the text

How can you make basic decisions about the choice of jobs and career? Most people go to the openings. If you read the want ads in the newspaper, for example, you learn who is offering employment. This is only one way to go about finding work.

Another strategy is to do some long-range planning. This involves determining

your abilities, interests, and needs. What have you already learned by education and experience to do well? There are your skills, or abilities. What is it that you most enjoy doing? There are your interests. What kind of income will you need to support yourself and your family? These are your needs.

In addition to the development of language and vocational skills, a successful career depends on learning how to look for work. Success is not guaranteed by seeing experts at an employment agency. While professionals may give valuable assistance, success in the long run depends on doing some thinking on your own - for instance, naming personal interests and abilities on a resume.

Developing a resume begins with listing the skills a person has already gained. In addition, a resume specifically how and where those skills were acquired. All told, the resume states the qualifications and work history of an applicant. A well-written resume sent with a letter of application can win the interview of a life-time.

Often what makes a prospective applicant stand out is the attitude that comes through in the cover letter. Qualities such as initiative, self-control, and a sense of responsibility are highly regarded by employers today.

«At the interview»

Once the company has obtained the resumes and completed forms of the candidates, the next step is to compare them. This can be a lengthy process, trying to match the attributes of the applicants to the post. Some CVs and forms will be discounted straight away because, for example:

  • they are badly written, perhaps they have poor spelling and are untidy;

  • the applicant's qualifications may be inadequate for the post;

  • the applicant may be too old or too young.

These applicants will be sent letters informing them that they were unsuccessful in their applications. Of the CVs and application forms remaining, a short list will be drawn up. This is a list of the applicants seen as best suited for the post. Letters will be sent to those listed, inviting them for interview on a certain date. At the same time the company will usually send for references.

The interview is the major way the companies access whether a candidate is suitable for a particular post. It allows the company to make a judgment on:

  • the candidate's personality (will he fit into the company and be able to mix with the other staff?)

  • the ability of the candidate to communicate

  • whether the information on the CV or application form is correct.

It also gives the candidate the chance to find out more about the company, such as the working conditions, hours or work, pay and training.

Here are a few Do's and Don'ts for the interviewed:

1. Don't be late for the interview.

2. Be neatly dressed.

3. Listen to the questions asked attentively.

4. Don't be surprised by a few simple questions at the beginning such as, for example, how you travelled to the interview.

5. Answer all the questions to the point.

6. Don't be too laconic in your answers.

7. Don't be afraid of giving your own views and opinions.

8. Be calm and polite during the interview.

TASK 4. Here some tips for your future interview:

  • don't be late, come 5 minutes before the interview time;

  • take several copies of your Cv, there may be two interviewers, they shouldn't look over the shoulder of each other to see your resume;

  • don't put on bright bows or ties, the interviewer should remember what you have said, not your bow or tie;

  • smile, be polite;

  • be calm, keep an eye contact, it proves that you are sure and sincere (tell the truth);

  • listen attentively, don't be afraid to ask to repeat;

  • avoid some details (it is not a confession), such as "I want to work here to get some experience, I am short of money";

  • avoid negative speeches about former employers; think over answers to such questions as why you are leaving your previous employer to avoid tricky questions;

  • speak about your former duties and achievements, don't mix these things;

  • ask about your duties, career prospects, company plans;

  • discuss your salary; the ability to bargain your salary shows your business abilities; show that you know what salary is paid by other companies; don't be very emotional when you discuss salary, it gives a bad impression.

  • pay attention to facilities (medical insurance, free food, free package tours, discounts on the company's equipment, premiums) - the salary may be low, but facilities - in abundance.

  • ask for 2-3 days to think over the final decision.

Getting a job is a very hard period in the life of most people. Companies choose an employee from hundreds of candidates according to special rules, that's why there're special 'typical' factors, influencing on employer's choice. Among such factors are: age, sex, experience, family background and marital status, personality and references. If you're to go to an interview tomorrow, sleep well before it and don't forget your CV at home - is the basic rule. Moreover, there're some recommendations, which can help you, for example, to read annual report, or company newspaper of the company to show your understanding of the corporate strategy on the interview. What's more, you should choose corresponding dress code for the interview. Even such advices are to help you make a good impression; some companies don't want to hire a man, who follows every advice. To illustrate this, I can quote Artemiy Lebedev, the most famous Russian web-designer: "If you enclose a standard stupid resume, written by the rules of American bureaucracy, we would delete it immediately after receiving. If your CV is composed according to all rules, we wouldn't choose you, as we might think, that your profession is to acquire a job". After getting a job, you may have some unexpected troubles with boss, too: e.g. if you dye your hair or wear something not appropriate. The best solution of such situation is to ask a trade union for advice, which can always help you in your fight with an employer. Of course, if you affect company discipline not coming in time or working badly, your dismissal wouldn't be unfair. To conclude, I can say that it is sometimes hard not only to get a job, but also to work in the staff, and if you don't want to be laid off, you should follow company rules, it is a must.

TASK 3. Write a few sentences using the following:

A job seeker should be able to sleep well before an interview

must choose corresponding dress code for the interview

make a good impression

follow every advice

affect company discipline

speak clearly

be neatly dressed

have hair well done

follow company rules

TASK 4. Speak about getting a job.
