My name is Natalia. My surname is Govorova. I am 15. I was born in 1996 in Semyenov. I live in a small town of Nizhniy Novgorod District. My address is Pionerskaya Street,76-9. My phone number is 41-5-81.

I am a student. I go to technical school. I am a good student. I do well in all subjects. They say that I am a hardworking person. To tell the truth, all technical school subjects come easy for me but sometimes I have to sit much, for example, to do lessons in Physics or Chemistry, to write a composition or to learn a poem by heart. But my favourite subject is English. I spend much time on it reading books, doing tests etc. May be, English and learning it will be a part of my future career.

I like reading. I think comics and detective stories are much easier to read but I prefer to read novels - historical or up-to-date. In the evening I often read newspapers (our local ones) or magazines.

I like music. My musical tastes are different, but it depends on my mood. But I think every apple is good in its season. I play the piano and the guitar, not seriously, but for my soul. Sometimes I like to listen to the Russian classical music. My favourite composers are Chaikovsky and Mozart. I don't like rock music, but I like «Queen» and «Beatles». Also I like Russian folk songs.

I have not much time to watch TV but sometimes I spend an hour or two watching an interesting film or a news programme.

I like fresh air and exercise. I'm sorry I have not much time for doing sports. But some aerobics in the morning, a swimming-pool twice a week, a ski-walk on a frosty day are of great help. Sports are fun.

I have a wide circle of interests. I'm very sociable, so I get a way with people. I have many friends; most of them are my group-mates. We spend much time together, going out to the cinema or to the disco party, speaking about lessons and music, discussing our problems. But most of all I like my family. We all are great friends and deeply attached to each other.

You see, it's me - a person with his good and not good characteristics, liking this and hating that. But it's interesting for me to live, to open new things.

Our family is neither large nor small. I have a mother, a father and a sister. We all live together in a three-room flat in Krasnye Baki. We are an average family.

My father Peter Ivanovich is 47 years old. He is a tall and well-built man with short black hair and grey eyes. He works as a manager at a plant. He likes his work and spends most of his time there. His hobby is collecting stamps. By character my father is a quiet man, while my mother is energetic and talkative.

My mother's name is Marina Petrovna. She is forty. She is a teacher of music and plays the piano well. My mother always has a lot of work to do about the house and at school. She is a busy woman and we all help her.

My sister's name is Irena. Like our mother Irena has blue eyes and fair hair. She is a very good-looking girl. Irena is five years younger than me. She is a pupil of the 6th form. She does well at school and gets only good and excellent marks. Literature is her favourite subject and she wants to become a teacher.

Our family is very united. We like to spend time together. In the evenings we watch TV, read books and newspapers, listen to music or just talk about the events of the day. Our parents don't always agree with what we say, but they listen to our opinion.

All of us like to spend our weekends in the country. We often go to the village where our grandparents live. They are pensioners now, but prefer to live in the country. My grand-grandmother is still alive. She lives in my grandmother's family and is always glad to see us. Her health is poor and she asks us to come and see her more often. I also have many other relatives: uncles, aunts, cousins. We are happy when we are together.

Memorize the poem

My sister is pretty

My sister is nice

She has a short nose and

Beautiful eyes.

Her full lips are rosy

Her cheeks are rosy too

Her hair is fair

Her eyes are blue.

Her little face is round

Her ears are small.

I love my dear sister

Best of all, best of all.

Discuss with your partner the topic "Family"

Large family

Advantages.
You have a lot of people, your sisters and brothers, you are not alone, they are your relatives that means, and they can only help you.

Disadvantages.
If it is not a big country house or manor, you have to share the room with you sisters or brothers, children always disturb each other, they always have quarrel.

Children have to share parents' attention.

If the family is not very, children have to wear hand-me-down cloth, have no possibility to go abroad, don't have many things, I mean, parents are not able to buy anything a child wants.

To my mind, theme must be a big manor to live comfortable in a big family. A big house, where everyone can have his own room, that means his own surface. It is very important. It is not convenient, when someone else lives in the same room with you, because you are constantly disturbing each other, you have no rest and silence, you haven't go any your personal surface. I think, it is good to have many relatives, but when they don't live with you.

Small family

Advantages
You have all your parents' attention.
You can wear new clothes and go abroad.
Parents are able to buy you many things.
No one disturb you, you have your personal surface.
You are not alone, because still you can have a lot of cousins and friends. When not cousins, then friends.

Disadvantages
None. Maybe that you have to care about your parents alone, when you are a grown up.

My real friend

It is very hard to find a real friend. And some people can't find them till the very end of their life. However, having a friend is needed for almost everyone. Importance of friends is greatly shown by many idioms. For example, between friends all is common, and I absolutely agree with it. And another one, before you choose a friend, eats a bushel of salt with him. No doubt, it is true.

Hopefully I have a real friend. His name is Michael. He lives in other city but it doesn't mind anything for friendship. We studied together at school. But we are friends even fifteen years after graduating from it. We have different professions but it doesn't matter also. The main thing is that we have common interests. And even more, we are ready to help each other with any problems we face.

We meet each other neither seldom nor often. It happens once or twice every month. Michael comes to my city for a business trips and we spend spare time together. We like playing table tennis and fishing. Fishing is our hobby.

I don't have an ability to predict future, but I am sure that in future we will keep our friendship. Friends will be friends, as Freddie Mercury said.

3 Whаt does Ann say about her personality and interests?

4 What does Ann like doing with his best friend?

5 How long have they known eaсh other?

6 Why aгe they сlose friends?

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for youг letter and all youг nеws. I hope youг exаms went wеll.

You askеd about Jane. She is not my girlfriend. She's my best fгiend. She lives nеxt door, and wе spend a lot of time togеthеr. She looks athletic beсause she is tall and slim, but she hates spoгt. Hеr hair and eyes aгe dark, and she loves being dramatic. Jane's very extrovert - she loves parties and being the centre of attention.

Jane likes reading magazines, experimenting with new сlothes and trying out new make-up. Obviously, I don't do these things with her, but wе oftеn go to the cinema oг just stay at hоme and listen to music.

I've known Jane for nearly 18 yеaгs because our families are neighbours. When we were babies, our mothers used to share lоoking after us, so she is like my sister. I think we are friends because we are diffеrent, and we balance eaсh other's personalities.

I'd love to know about your best friend - сan you writе about him or heг in your next letter?

With best wishes,

Ann

  • Shy and spotty

I'm 15 -year-old girl and I have a very serious problem. At my age I should have had a boyfriend by now, but I haven't. I feel no one is attracted to me. I don't know if it's because I'm very shy around boys, but I think it's to do with how I look. I'm quite spotty and quiet. I wish I could have plastic surgery, but I can't afford it. Please could you help me?

Advice: A recent survey showed that boys prefer personality and a sense of humour above looks when it came to picking a girlfriend. I'm sure if you asked girls they would say the same thing. Most people are shy in certain situations, and no one will think any less of you for being this way. And if a person has spots, so what? You don't need plastic surgery - you need a serious dose of self-confidence. In time your spots will go. Remember, it's not what you look like, it's who you are that matters.

  • Dumped for a new boyfriend (to dump - жарг. бросать кого-либо)

I am feeling really angry at the moment and I just don't know what to do. Ever since I was about three I've been friend with this girl, we've been through everything together. And now she is dumped me for a new boyfriend. I'm really sick of it, she totally ignored me all this week and has gone off with her boyfriend. I do have other friends, but I'm just so upset she's just thrown away our friendship after all these years. I don't know what to do about it now. What do you suggest?

Advice: Try talking to your friend, perhaps she is so caught up with her new boyfriend that she really doesn't realize she's excluding you. Unfortunately, if your friend purposely chose to dump you for her new boyfriend then there's nothing you can do but review your friendship. Ask yourself - is your friendship real? And remember, friendship change with time. Often the best friends we have from childhood grow up and away from us, but this is natural and normal. Other best friends will take their place.

4. DESCRIBING APPEARANCE1

1.Read the texts and discuss them with your partner

Text1

When we speak about somebody's figure, face, hands, feet we mean his or her appearance. A person may be tall, middle-sized or short, thin or plump. A face may be round, oval or square. In summer some people may have freckles on their faces. Old people have wrinkled faces.

People's hair may be long or short, thin or thick, good or bad, straight or curly. If it is long it is often plaited. Its colour may be black or fair, chestnut or red. Old people have grey hair. Women usually have their hair done at the hairdresser's.

Eyes may be large or small. They may be of different colour, grey, green, black, or hazel (brown).

Cheeks may be rosy or pale (if a person is ill), plump or hollow (if a person is very ill). Some people have dimples in their cheeks when they smile.

The manner of walking is called the walk (gait). One's step maybe: light, heavy, firm. Old people often shuffle their feet, have a shuffling gait.

Text2

How important is it for you to be attractive? Although everyone wants to be goodlooking, do you think beautiful people are always happy?

I don't think so. For example, it must be a problem to be a very beautiful woman, because some men may be more interested in looking at this woman than talking to her. They think of her like a picture rather than a person. Some people think that very pretty women and handsome men are stupid, as a rule. These people are thought to be only interested in their appearance.

Some people believe that only unattractive people can be clever. But surely no one wants to be really ugly; and no one wants to be plain either - that is to have rather simple face that can be easily forgotten. Being attractive can help you find happiness, but it does not always make you happy. So maybe the best thing is not to worry about your appearance. It is more important to try to be an interesting personality. Because interesting people are always attractive.

Betsy: If we speak about a man, we must admit that tastes differ. It depends not only on the culture or nationality, but also on the epoch.

Betsy: Well. I can give you example. I have a friend, Marry. Her features are very delicate and her charm is irresistible.

Ann: I have met her once. I agree with you. She seems a good kind of girl and her character corresponds to her appearance.

Friendship is a very important thing in people's lives. It is so nice to have a person you can rely on. Chose friends usually have similar ideas and beliefs. They understand, respect and trust each other.

A real friend is ready to share not only your joys but your sorrows and troubles. A devoted friend is the one to whom you can turn for help and advice. On the other hand friendship develops your responsibility and your ability to consider other peoples feelings and opinions. I think that friendship is a great force. But we must also think how to keep friendship going because good friends are easier lost than found.

I have a lot of friends. I can't imagine my life without friends, they make my life more interesting and enjoyable. Now I'd like to tell you about my best friend Olga. We got acquainted many years ago (at school) when we were little children. Our friendship grew with years and now we are inseparable.

Olga is a pretty girl. She is thin, slender and stylish. She has got lovely dark hair, blue eyes with long lashes. She is hardworking, organized and does well at school. She is always ready to give you a hand. She is a kind person who always knows how to have a good time. Olga has a good sense of humour and never looks moody. These qualities attract to her all the people who come in touch with her.

We are never bored when we are together. We spend much time, help each other to do our homework, walk in the park, exchange books, listen to music and discuss the latest school news. We know that we can trust each other in need.

It is not easy to meet a true and faithful friend. I'm happy that I have met Olga. I'm sure that I can rely on her in any situation. She is the one who I can turn to for help and who I can tell all my secrets and problems.

I respect my friend for her strong will, cheerful and kind character, her intellect and modesty. She is always full of ideas and knows what and how to do. It is very pleasant to be with her around.

Dialogue 1

Adriana: I heard you're moving to New York.

Ryan: Yes. I've got an offer in upstate New York.

Adriana: Oh, that's great! But I'm going to miss you.

Ryan: Me, too. Let's keep in touch.

Adriana: Yeah. Don't forget to drop me a line when you settle down.

Ryan: Trust me. I won't. I'll keep you posted.

Adriana: You have my address.

Ryan: Well, I have your e- mail address.

Adriana: All right! I look forward to hearing from you son. Good luck!

Dialogue 2

Frank: I just received a letter from one of my old high school buddies.

Sarah: That's nice!

Frank: Well, actually I haven't heard from him for ages.

Sarah: To be frank with you, I've been out of touch with most of my old friends. Only one or two still keep me posted about what they are doing.

Frank: I know. It's really hard to maintain contact when people move around so much.

Sarah: That's right. People just drift apart! But you're luck to be back in touch with your buddy again.

Dialogue 3

Roger: So, how is your new roommate?

Martha: She really turns me off.

Roger: What happened?

Martha: She's always making loud noises at midnight and when I remind her, she always makes rude remarks.

Roger: Why don't you have a heart to heart chat with her?

Martha: I tried, but it didn't work.

Dialogue 4

Terri: How are things going with you and your roommate?

John: Not very well. We're supposed to share the groceries, but I end up feeding him three meals a day. My grocery bill is huge, you know. I really can't afford it any longer.

Terri: I know how you feel. I used a roommate like that. He never offered to reimburse me for anything.

John: I'm really fed up with this, but I just don't know how to tell him that he should come up with half the grocery bill, because sometimes he treats me to a meal in a restaurant.

Terri: Well, honesty is the best policy. Maybe you just should have a heart-to-heart, friend-to-friend talk with him. If he refuses to mend his ways, then ask him to move out. You can't let him wear out his welcome.

2. Read and discuss.

A family is an essential part of our society. A family is a little world. According to researches, households of three or even four generations will become typical.

Firstly a family has things shared together like dreams, hopes and possessions. I think it is great. Besides, we need a family for comfort and protection.

Secondly a family is a place where they respect dwellers, a place where all members can enjoy the dignity of their own. Some people say that privacy is impossible in an extended family. But in my opinion trust is more important for a happy family than any other feature.

There are a lot of problems in an extended family, especially between brothers and sisters. They always treat one another badly. Of course, if you have a lot of brothers and sisters, there will be no privacy. But on the other hand, when you have no brothers or sisters, life becomes boring.

There are a lot of problems and conflicts that appear between teenagers and their parents. They don't understand each other.

Parents always want their children to be clever and learn harder. They don't bother themselves to understand their children. They are always glad when their children have trouble with things that are very valuable for them.

Parents always cheat teenagers. They say that school is very important for us and to enter an institute we should have good marks in our school-leaving certificates.

But it's not what the children want. I think that it is necessary to bridge the generation gap, and parents and children must come to an agreement.

3. Answer the questions.

1. What is a generation gap?
2. How should we overcome it?
3. What family is extended?
4. Do you agree that an extended family is better?

5. Is your family an extended one or not?
6. What problems are there in an extended family?
7. Do you agree that parents often cheat you?
8. Do you think that a school certificate with good results is important?

It is very important to have good relations in the family. Discuss your and parents' responsibilities.

Read and sing the songs

How is your mother?
She's fine, thanks.
How is your father?
He's fine, thanks.
How is your sister?
She's fine, thanks.
How is your brother?
He's fine, thanks.

"The more we are together"

The more we are together, together, together,
The more we are together, the happier we are.
For your friend is my friend,
And my friend is your friend.
The more we are together, the happier we are.

Ann: You mustn't get up, ma. The doctor has strictly prohibited you to do so.

Mother: I know, but there's so much to do about the house, my dear.

Ann: You needn't fear, Mum. You leave that to me.

Dialogue 2

Lisa: Do you remember that next Sunday is our Mum's birthday? What present can we buy for her? Have you decided yet?

Kate: Well, I'm not quite sure. What about a vase? I saw a very beautiful one in the shop the other day. I think she will be very glad, because she has broken her favourite vase. Besides, she likes practical presents and it can always be useful.

Lisa: I'm afraid you forgot that Dad gave her a very beautiful vase on Women's Day. We have lots of vases at home. In addition, Mum doesn't like cut flowers, she prefers them in pots.

Kate: OK. Let's buy her a flower then. Mum likes to take care of them so we can buy a flower in a beautiful pot. They are lovely and we can choose the one she will really enjoy.

Lisa: You know it's very difficult to find nice flowers at reasonable prices. I'm afraid we don't have enough money to buy a really beautiful flower. Why don't we buy her a box of chocolates? They are not very expensive and they are delicious. I'm sure she'll like them.

Kate: I don't think so. No, it's quite an ordinary present. We should give her something special, something that she'll remember forever.

Lisa: What do you suggest?

Kate: I've got an idea! Why don't we bake an apple pie for her! She is fond of home-made pies and this one is her favourite!

Lisa: Bake a pie? Not a bad idea!

1) предисловие;

2) о пользовании словарём;

3) о фонетической транскрипции;

4) список помет и условных сокращений;

5) Алфавит (например, английский в англо-русском словаре);

6) собственно словарь;

7) приложение.

В результате анализа структуры словаря студент должен:

- знать объём словаря (т.е. количество слов);

- знать, где находятся в словаре алфавит, краткий фонетический справочник, список помет и условных сокращений;

- полное название учебного учреждения (шрифт - Times New Roman 14, межстрочный интервал одинарный, выравнивание по центру) ;

- заголовок: наименование работы (творческая работа, доклад, реферат и т.д.), дисциплина, тема работы (шрифт - Times New Roman 18, межстрочный интервал 1,5, выравнивание по центру);
