1. What do English people celebrate on the 17th of March?

What can you say about St. Patrick?

2 Symbols of St.Patick

Let's read about the history of this holiday.

March 17 is St. Patrick's Day. It's a national Irish holiday. But many people who immigrated to the United States have come from Ireland. Today, Irish descendants in the United States put on a noisier and bigger St. Patrick's Day celebration than the people in Ireland. Every year on March 17 or the preceding Saturday, cities with large population of Irish Americans have parades. Green is one of the national colours of Ireland and also one of the signs of spring. Green stripes are painted on the streets where the parade will travel. People wear green shirts, ties, hair ribbons and hats. Many American bars even serve green beer on that day!

And now let's read the text about St. Patrick.

St. Patrick

The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Kilpatrick, Scotland about AD 387. When he was 16, he was sold into slavery to Ireland where he was a shepherd for 6 years. While in captivity he studied and turned to religion. He escaped slavery and later returned to Ireland as a missionary, determined to convert Ireland to Christianity. A legend says that on Easter Sunday St. Patrick plucked a shamrock from the ground and explained that by its triple leaf and single stem that it represented the blessed Holy Trinity.

He traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country. He also set up schools and churches. His mission in Ireland lasted for thirty years.

He died on March 17 in AD 461. That day has been commemorated as St. Patrick's Day ever since.

Answer my questions, please.

  1. When and where was St. Patrick born?

  2. What's happened when he was sixteen?

  3. Why did he return to Ireland?

  4. What did he do there?

  5. Why do they celebrate St. Patrick Day on the 17th of March?

  6. What colour is for St. Patrick's Day?

  7. What does this colour symbolize?

7 "Just Myths"

  1. Patrick used a shamrock to explain the trinity

Not true but the shamrock was worn in Ireland as a symbol of the cross.

  1. Patrick drove the snakes out of the country.

There were never any snakes in Ireland.

  1. Patrick was the first to preach Christianity in Ireland.

It is known that there were Christians in Ireland before his time.

8 Look at the screen. There is a nice poem about one of the Irish symbols. Find and read the description of the shamrock.

Who is this strange creature? What do you know about him? What kind of person is he? Read the text and then answer these questions.

Tell about Leprechauns, please.

12. My dear friends, I would like to give you little shamrocks with an Irish blessing. It's very warm to my mind. Let's read it aloud.

May the road rise to meet you,

May the wind be always at your back,

The sun shine warm upon your face,

The rain fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
