Aims:

  1. Educational: to talk about adventures and adventurers, learn character adjectives, review of Past Simple and Past Continuous, get knowledge about Past Perfect, learn new words according the theme.

  2. Developing: to develop speaking and reading skills, cognitive skills, creative thinking

  3. Pedagogical: to teach students to work in pairs, groups and individually, teach them to respect each other and like studying English language

Results:

Student should know: new words according to the theme, character adjectives, Past Perfect

Students can: talk about zodiac signs, discuss the theme "Adventures", read narrative articles

Good morning! I'm glad to see you! How are you? Are you in a good mood today? What date is it today? And we hope we will have a good time at our lesson, now let's begin working.

Washington Irving said "Great minds have purpose, other wishes". I hope you all have purpose to study English and you will achieve it. Today we are going to talk about Adventurers, and our tasks for today are - to learn character adjectives

- to get more information about zodiac signs

- to talk about adventures

- review of Past Simple and Past Continuous

- to get knowledge about Past Perfect

Show the slide with the word Adventure, give the definition: Adventure - is an unusual, exciting and sometimes dangerous experience. Ask the students which words can be related to this one and why.

Discuss with the students if an exploration is an adventure. Give the definition: Exploration - is the action of traveling in or through an unfamiliar area in order to learn about it. Ask them to prove it. What types of exploration they can name (land, ocean and space).

Tell the students that sometimes people travel, have the adventures and even don't think that they can explore or prove something. Give them set of papers with the tasks. Explain the students that they are going to read the text about Ferdinand Magellan's voyage, the person who was the first to sail around the world, and put the verbs in brackets in the form of Past Simple. It will help them to check their knowledge about regular and irregular verbs.

Before reading ask them to look at the glossary of the text and read all the words for them and ask the students to repeat them all together.

Give them the task to work with the text.

Ask the students to check their answers by themselves with the help of slide.

Give them the map of route of Magellan and ask the students with the help of map, text and words from it retell the story of his travelling. Ask four students to come to the blackboard and show and tell about each stage of the route.

Students discuss what the exploration is and what types of exploration they can name.

Student read the text and put the verbs into the right form of Past Simple, paying attention to regular and irregular verbs.



Students look at the glossary and repeat the words after the teacher.

They check their results.

Students with the help of map, text and words from it try to retell the story about Magellan's voyage, show it on the map.

Ask the students how different traits of our character can have an influence on our life. For example which traits of the character should have a leader, an explorer, a scientist, a traveller? Encourage students to name as many adjectives as they can.

Give them the list of different character adjectives. Ask to look through them to find new ones. Read the adjectives for them.

Ask the students if they believe in horoscope, and give them the names of zodiac signs, ask the students to read them all together and write them down in their copybooks.

Give them the task in pairs to ask each other about the date of their birthday and what their sign is. In pair ask them to name their traits and discuss it using the words from papers, if all the representatives have the same traits of character.

Ask some students to talk about their neighbour's character.

Then give them the cards with zodiac signs and description of it. Ask the students to match the picture with the description. They work in groups of four. Ask the students to name two adjectives about each sign and tell which of them can be adventurers and why?

Students name different character adjectives to describe explorers, adventurers and other.

Students define new adjectives.

In pairs ask each other questions and talk about their traits of character.

Ask the students if they know when we use Past Perfect. Tell the students that you are going to explain them this theme. Explain them the usage of this tense, give the examples. Ask the students to write their own examples and then check them.

Ask them to do the exercise from presentation to complete the sentences. Give them the papers with exercise to define what action was the first.

Give the students the cards with pictures to check their comprehension of the new theme.

Students write down the main grammar rules and examples, write down own examples.

Explain that the following story is real and it was an adventure of 2008, not only adults can be so brave, but also young determined people. Give the students the article "From Pole to Pole - Manpowered", ask them in pairs to put the paragraphs in the correct order, read the text and translate. Explain unknown words, ask the students to write down them in copybooks.

After the reading with the students answer the questions according to the article (true or false questions). Ask the students if they would like to be the adventurers? How do you think is it difficult? Explain the answers.

In pairs put the abstracts from the article in right order, read it and translate, write down new words.
