Elizabeth II

Elizabeth II became queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1952. In addition she is head of the Commonwealth.

Elizabeth was born on 21 April 1926 in London, the first child of Albert, Duke of York, and his wife, formerly Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She initially had little prospect of succeeding to the throne until her uncle, Edward VIII, abdicated in December 1936. Her father then became George VI and she became heir.

Elizabeth and her younger sister Margaret were educated at home. On the outbreak of war in 1939, they were evacuated to Windsor Castle. In 1945, Elizabeth joined the war effort, training as a driver in the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service (WATS).

In November 1947, she married a distant cousin, Philip Mountbatten (formerly Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark), who was created duke of Edinburgh. The couple have four children.

George VI died on 6 February 1952 while Elizabeth and Philip were in Kenya. She returned home immediately, and was crowned at Westminster Abbey in June 1953.

For more than 50 years, during a period of great change in Britain, the queen has carried out her political duties as head of state, the ceremonial responsibilities of the sovereign and a large annual programme of visits in the United Kingdom as well as numerous foreign tours.

Despite the controversies and scandals surrounding her children and other members of the royal family, she remains a respected head of state.

Hobby. It's well-known that Elizabeth II is mad about horse races. No one competition isn't held without her participation, and bookmakers accept rates on the colour of Elizabeth's hat.

Besides, all the world knows that Queen's favourite dogs are small friendly Corgy. The first Corgy named Susan was given to Elizabeth II in 1944 on her 18th birthday, and more than 30 Susan's descendants lived with Queen during her reign. Now Elizabeth II has 5 dogs. More than that, Queen created a new breed herself.

In 1997 she and her husband celebrated their golden marriage and in 2002 her golden jubilee (50 years on the throne).

In 2006 Elizabeth II celebrated her 80th birthday. Mass celebrations in this occasion, that were held in Great Britain and in the countries of Commonwealth, showed that she was still adored. Queen has two birthdays every year - the first is actual, that she celebrates in the family, and the second is official, that is solemnly celebrated on the 17th of June.

And now, some interesting facts from her reign and life. During her reign Queen undertook 256 official foreign visits, having been in 129 different countries. In Australia she was for 15 times, in Canada - 23 times, 10 - in New Zealand and 6 in Jamaica. In 1994 she was in Russia, having become the first British monarch who visited our country. In 2006 on her brilliant marriage Queen sent 280 000 of congratulatory telegrams to families, that celebrated 60 years of their marriage, too.

78 000 of holiday puddings she distributed to her servants on Christmas. And Elizabeth II received 3 000 000 letters and 387 700 honourable prizes and awards.

Once, during one of her radiobroadcast while congratulating people on Christmas, Queen said: " Good night and good luck". Now this phrase is used by the whole English journalism.

So, we say you Good night and Good luck, too!
