John Lennon was born on 9^th October 1940 in Liverpool. His parents didn't live together and so John's aunt Mimi looked after him. John was a clever boy but he was lazy. He was bored at school. When he was 16 he heard Elvis Presley sing "Heartbreak Hotel" and this changed his life. He decided that he wanted to play the guitar. Aunt Mimi bought him his first guitar. The following year John met Paul McCartney at Liverpool Institute and they formed "The Beatles". In 1960 the group were in Hamburg for three month. They played in disco, sometimes for eight hours every night. Three years later they become famous when they made their first hit "Please please me" in a studio in London. When disk jockeys played it on their radio stations, English fans went wild. John was now rich and famous. He married Yoko Ono in Gibraltar in 1969. He was very happy with Yoko but he was lonely. He was a millionaire. But he didn't have many close friends. Two years later he and Yoko left England and went to live in New York. The next few years were very happy ones for John. His son Sean was born. John was content with his home and his family. On 9^th December 1980 a fan shot John outside his home near Central Park. Millions of fans all over the world cried when they heard the news. Many fans thought he was a wonderful rock - and - roll player, greater even than Elvis Presley.
