Текст 1.

Ellen. You're so lucky, Todd. You travel all over the world. I never leave Chicago!

Todd. Yeah - but it's hard work. I just practise, practise, practise and play tennis all the time. I don't get time to see much.

Ellen. What about last year? Where did you go? Tell me about it.

Todd. Well - in January I was in Melbourne, for the Australian Open. It's a beautiful city, sort of big and cosmopolitan, like Chicago. There's a nice mixture of old and new buildings. January's their summer so it was hot when I was there.

Ellen. And what's Dubai like? When were you there?

Todd. In February. We went from Australia to Dubai for the Dubai Tennis Open. Dubai is very hot! Hot, very dry, very modern. Lots of really modern buildings, white buildings. Interesting place, I enjoyed it.

Ellen. And Paris! That's where I want to go! What's Paris like?

Todd. Everything that you imagine! Very beautiful, wonderful old buildings but lots of interesting modern ones, too. And of course very romantic, especially in May. I can take you there sometime.

Текст 2.

Most people want to see where the Queen lives when they visit London, so Buckingham Palace is very popular. But I think- the best thing to do is to take a boat trip on the River Thames to see all the famous buildings. The Thames is the longest river in England, which flows from the west into the North Sea. In London, many well-known bridges across the Thames connect the north and south of the city. You can get on the boat at Westminster Bridge. It is one of the best known bridges over the River Thames in central London. It is popular with tourists, who like to take photographs of each other with the Houses of Parliament in the background.

If you go down the river to the Tower of London, you will pass St Paul's Cathedral on the way. This is a very old and beautiful church, and my favourite building. It was designed in the late 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren to replace a previous cathedral destroyed in the Fire of London, and was completed in 1710. The cathedral contains the graves of many famous people. As a change from sightseeing, you could go shopping along Oxford Street, or maybe if you like animals, go to London Zoo, which was established in the early 19th century. There's a lot to do and see in the capital. Come and see! 2. ЧТЕНИЕ

2. ЧТЕНИЕ

Bl

Установите соответствие между заголовками А-Н и текстами 1-7. Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую букву только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.

A.. Things to see.

B. The golden city.

C. A look at history.

D. The cheap and free city.

E. The city having two parts.

F. Ecological problems.

1. Some visitors say that London is an expensive city, but there are a few things to do which do not cost a lot of money. Most museums are free and give guided tours as well as lectures. The National Theatre next to the Royal Festival Hall also has free concerts in the foyer every evening and on Saturday lunchtimes. Some cinemas are cheaper on Mondays; others sell half-price tickets before 6 pm.

2. Budapest has a population of over two million people. The River Danube divides the city into two parts. On the west bank there are the woods and hills of Buda and the old town. On the east bank there is the bigger and more modern Pest, the business and shopping centre. From Buda there are wonderful views of Pest and the river. Six bridges join Buda and Pest. For nearly a thousand years Buda and Pest were two towns. Then in 1873 they joined and became one city, Budapest.

3. Prague has a population of over one million people. It is built on seven hills on the banks of the River Vltava. Fifteen bridges cross the river. The most famous is Charles Bridge, which joins Prague Castle and the old town. The view of the castle from the river is very famous. Some people say Prague is the most beautiful city in the world. It still has many beautiful medieval buildings and statues. Perhaps the most popular building is the Old Town Hall with its amazing 15th century astronomical clock.

4. Like many big cities, London has problems with traffic and pollution. Over 1,000,000 people a day use the London Underground, but there are still too many cars on the streets. The air isn't clean, but it is cleaner than it was 100 years ago. Until the Clean Air Act in 1956, London was famous for its fog or "smog", which is a mixture of smoke and fog. The best thing about London is the parks. There are five in the city centre.

5. The saying "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life!" is a I, but you can't be bored of London. There are hundreds of historic buildings, galleries and museums. There are parks and street markets, over 80 theatres and even more cinemas. If you want to discover London, it is best to start with a tour on a sightseeing bus. It's also fun to go on a guided walk.
