Let me introduce myself. My name is Ann. I am twenty. I am a student. I study at the university. I am a prospective economist. I like this profession, that's why I study with pleasure. My parents are not economists, but they support me in my choice. We are a friendly family and try to understand and support each other in any situation. Understanding and support is what I need in friendship as well. Some of my friends study at the same university. After classes we usually gather together, discuss our plans or problems and have some fun. We have a lot of hobbies.

Sometimes we go to the disco, sometimes organize a picnic in the open air, play sports or watch a nice film. One of my hobbies is cooking. My name is Katya. I am a student. In two years I will become a teacher of biology. My profession is my hobby as well. I visit the bookstores of my town regularly and buy new books in biology. It helps me to learn all the novelties in my profession I often discuss the books that I have bought, with my friends at the university When I go shopping, I buy not only books, but also some other things, that I need.

I live in Dnepropetrovsk. It is a large city. There are a lot of shops here. If I go shopping, it is not easy for me to choose the right place at once. Learning foreign languages

I am a student. I am a prospective teacher of biology. One of my hobbies is the English language. It is the most popular language on earth. Many people learn in order to build a successful career or find friends abroad. As for me, I find this language one of the most beautiful in the world. That's why I decided to learn it. I like to listen to English songs. I am glad that I can understand what some song is about without anybody's help.

I started to learn English at school and now I continue to learn it at the university. I often stay at the university after classes, because I am a member оf a research group. My favourite book

I am a student. In two years I will become a teacher of biology. I have to read a lot of books on biology. But I also read books on art, science and history. My parents are fond of reading. We have over 300 books of our favourite authors at home. Among them are plays by Shakespeare, historical novels by Walter Scott, detective stories by Conan Doyle and many others.

When I have free time I read my favourite book by Hemingway «For Whom the Bell Tolls». Hemingway often describes in his books the events of the World War I and World War II, in which he took part. He was born in Chicago in 1899 and died in his house in Idaho in 1961. His books depicted the tragedy of war. The unique style of Hemingway, his realistic manner of writing brought him great success and the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The main characters of my favourite book often find themselves in a difficult situation. The war influenced their lives greatly and made them stronger. They have to face death almost every minute and overcome their fear. But they do not lose the ability to love and share their feelings. Even in the last minute in his life, one of the principal characters supports his beloved and wishes her to become happy after his death This book changed a lot in my views. Now I think that the most important thing in lite is to find a person who can understand and support you in any situation, and whom you may take care of.

My working day

I am student Classes at the university begin at 8.30, so I have to get up at 7 o'clock on week days. When I wake up, I usually lie in bed for 5 minutes and then stand up. I try to make my bed every day, but sometimes I forget to do it. Then I open the window, breathe in the fresh air deeply and do my morning exercises. I am usually in a hurry, so I do not have much time for that. Then I go to the bathroom, wash myself and clean my teeth After that I dress and brush my hair. Besides, in summer the first fruits and vegetables appear. My favourite fruit is a melon. But I also like peaches, plums and cherries. Summer is a really good time for me.

That is why my favourite TV programme is "In the World of Animals". It is a weekly programme. As I watch it not often, I wait for it impatiently.

It usually starts with amazing facts from the world of nature. So I feel interested from the very beginning. Most of all I like to learn something new about the sea inhabitants - different kinds of fish, whales, dolphins, etc. I like dolphins. I may watch them for hours. I have learned a lot about them from the programme "In the World of Animals". They are very smart. That's why these creatures may help people in different spheres оf life. They may also bring a lot of fun with their tricks, especially to children.

I do not like game shows, where people play games or answer questions in order to win money or prizes. But I like to answer questions about animals in my favourite TV programme "In the World of Animals". I have already won several times! I am glad there is such a programme that brings me a lot of fun and interesting information.

My everyday meals

My name is Anya. I study at the university. As I am a student, I do not have much time for my meals. Usually I have two or three meals a day. My plans for future

My name is Svetlana. I am a student. I study in Donetsk. I am 19 years old. I am a student of the third year of study. I have a lot of plans for future. And my first dream is to graduate from the university and start working as an economist. My future profession is my own choice. I study with pleasure. I would like to earn my own money and become more independent.

Nowadays everyone dreams about a successful career. I also want to become a very good economist. I like to communicate with people, so I will be happy to organize and lead a project in the sphere of economics. I am also fond of foreign languages, English and German. My favourite writer

I am a student, that's why I should read a lot of books. I like reading. Literature means a lot in my life. It helps me to understand other people better. I often analyze the characters of the books and it helps me to understand the world and myself. I read books by different authors: Russian, Ukrainian, German, and English.

My favourite Russian writer is Darya Dontsova. She is a popular Russian writer of modern prose. The works of this author are smart and really interesting. According to her own words, her novels are based on real facts. That arouses the reader's interest and provokes their own analysis of the events. When I got acquainted with her books, I was really impressed by her wit and humor. The main characters often find themselves in a difficult situation, but they do not give up and try to find the way out. Some of the characters of her books are mean and jealous. Some of them are deeply feeling, faithful and tender.

When I read books by my favourite author, Darya Dontsova, I have a feeling that I may meet her characters even in my native town. I always try to watch an interview on TV with Darya Dontsova. She has a happy family that supports her in her work and in difficult situations. She has a strong character, and she is optimistic. Her brain works as a good computer and she knows how to derive benefit from it. I always recommend my friend storead her books.

My favourite artist

I have many favourite artists. Among them are writers, painters and musicians. When I have free time I often read my favourite books or listen to my favourite music. When I have a spare day, I sometimes visit Kiev Museum of Russian Art. I like the museum, for there are many masterpieces there. But the most interesting works for me are the paintings by Ivan Aivazovsky.

Ivan Aivazovsky was born and died in Theodosia. As he studied and lived in Russia for some time, he is considered to be a Russian painter. He studied at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg Ivan Aivazovsky was a painter of seascapes. Aivazovsky produced about 6,000 paintings, depicting mainly scenes on the Black Sea and turbulent seascapes, including The Ninth Wave Black Sea, Amid the Waves, Flood iSudak, and Storm. He also painted sea battles (such as Siege of Sevastopol) and Ukrainian landscapes (Harvest in Ukraine, Winter Scene in Ukraine, Wedding in Ukraine, Odessa at Night. Crimean View in Moonugnt, View of the Crimea, and Harvest in the Crimea). Aivazovsky established a picture gallery in Theodosia, which he donated later to the city. The Aivazovsky Picture Gallery in Theodosia has some 400 of his works, as well as paintings by Crimean seascape artists and a small collection of seascapes by Western artists. Ivan Aivazovsky depicted sea and the people who lived by the sea. He dedicated many of his works to the struggle between the people and the sea. He showed strong will and courage of those people and the power of the sea.

Olympic Symbols

The Olympic Games have their own flag and motto. The flag is white with five circles. The circles represent the five continents of Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North and South America. The circles are black, blue, green, red and yellow. The flag of every country in the games has at least one of these colours. The motto of the Olympics is 'Faster, higher, stronger'.

The most exciting moment of the opening ceremony is the lighting of the Olympic Flame, another symbol of the Olympic Games. Runners bring a torch from the valley of Olympia in Greece. Thousands of runners take part in the journey. The journey starts four weeks before the opening of the Games. At the opening ceremony, the final runner carries the torch to the stadium, and lights the new Olympic Flame. Then there is a very big song, dance and music show. The Olympic Flame burns until the end of the Games.

The International Olympic Committee works hard between the Games. They choose the place for the next Olympics and new sports for them too.

Marco Polo

Marco Polo is famous for his journeys across Asia. He was one of the first Europeans to travel in Mongolia and China. He wrote a famous book called 'The Travels'.

He was born in Venice, Italy in 1254. In 1272, when he was only 17 years old, he travelled to Asia with his father and uncle. The journey was very long. They visited a lot of places and saw wonderful things: eye glasses, ice-cream, spaghetti and the riches of Asia.

After three years they entered China through the Great Wall. In 1275 Kublai Khon, the Emperor of China, met the visitors at his Summer Palace in the capital of China at Xanadu. The palace was very beautiful. There were a lot of gold things and silk curtains. The Emperor gave a big banquet. There were more than a thousand people in the palace. On the emperor's birthday 5,000 soldiers rode through the city to the. palace on elephants. Marco Polo visited some huge markets, where merchants from all over the world bought and sold all kinds of things. He was happy to see one of the greatest cities of the thirteenth century and spent 18 years in China.

When he returned to Italy in 1295, he became a popular storyteller. People came to his home to hear stories about his journeys in the East. Many of them did not believe him. When he died, he said: 'I haven't told half of what I saw, because no one can believe it.'

Animals in South America

South America is famous for its wild animals. There are many kinds. We saw some of them. We drove to the jungle in the north of Brazil. We were really lucky. We walked very quietly and we saw a jaguar. It is a kind of South American cheetah. It was beautiful and very fast. I was really scared. I think Jaguars like eating hedgehogs!

Then we went by boat up the Amazon river in the east of Brazil. It is the biggest river in South America. We saw alligators there. They were three metres long, fast and have big teeth! They are like crocodiles. We didn't stay there long. We didn't know. Maybe alligators like eating hedgehogs too!

In Brazil we took a helicopter to the desert. There we met an unusual animal: an armadillo. Armadillos aren't very big but they are very strong. They have got a 'house' on their backs like a tortoise. Armadillos don't eat hedgehogs - they eat insects!

The last animal we saw in the forest in Brazil was a vampire bat. It was small and slow but ... Heeeeelp! Do you know the story of Dracula? He met a vampire bat. It drank his blood. We didn't stay long in that forest!

Bats in Australia

Camels

For many years, in the desert camels were the only kind of transport. Before the age of modem trains, camel trains carried all the things between Central Asia and Europe. People made camel trains with 10,000 to 15,000 animals. Each camel could carry approximately 200 kilos and could travel twenty miles a day. This kind of transport was so important that people called camels the 'ships of the desert'

Animals in Great Britain

People in Great Britain like animals. There are even special hospitals, which help wild animals. There are a lot of television films about wildlife. They are very popular with children and grown ups. A lot of British families have 'bird tables' in their gardens. Birds can eat from them during the winter months. The 'bird table' should be high because cats can eat birds.

The British often think their animals are like people. For example in Britain animals can have jobs like people. British Rail has cats and pays them for their work. Their job is to catch mice. There is usually one cat per station. They get food and free medical help. The cats don't catch a lot of mice but they are very popular with the British Rail staff and travellers.

Do you want to be healthy?

To be healthy you must eat good food. Good food gives you a lot of energy, vitamins and minerals. The best way to get these is to eat fresh fruit and vegetables five times a day. Have a lot of water. You should have two litres every day. You should eat bread, meat and potatoes, but you shouldn't eat a lot of sweets or chocolates because they are bad for your teeth. Eggs and milk make your bones strong. And you shouldn't eat at a different time or eat a lot one day and a little the next.

Eat healthy food!

Little Andy's mother is not at home, she is at work. Andy is hungry. He wants to have some nice things for lunch. He opens the fridge and sees two bananas and some grapes. He doesn't like grapes, but he likes bananas very much, so he takes them. He sees a bottle of Coca Cola. "Oh, good!" he thinks. In the cupboard there is a jar of apricot jam. "That's my favourite", says Andy. He eats the jam, the two bananas and drinks the Coca Cola. When his mother comes home, she sees Andy on the sofa. The little boy is not well. "Oh, Andy", his mother says, "Coca-Cola and jam are not good for you. You should eat healthy food."

Palov

Some people say Alexander the Great's cook was the first person to cook palov. One day Alexander the Great was hungry. His army was hungry too. Alexander the Great wanted the army to be happy. He said to his cook, "Please cook something special". The cook took rice, oil, carrots, meat and onion and made palov. Everybody liked it and they ate a lot. Now palov is many people's favourite meal.

Some people say Avicena made the first palov. A sick man came to Avicena and asked for help. Avicena looked at him and checked his health. Then he said, "Take rice, oil, carrots, meat and onion and cook them. Add some water. When it's ready, eat it. Do this often. This food makes you strong." This was the first palov. People in Uzbekistan eat it often and it makes them strong.

Amir Temur

Amir Temur was bom on 9 April 1336 In the village of Hojailgor near Shakhrisabz. His father was a rich man whose name was Amir Taragay. His mother was a noble woman. He was strong and handsome. His father had many servants. When he was 12 years old he began to rule over them. When he was a young man he began to go to war. He was a good horseman. In Europe he was called Tamerlane.

AlisherNavoi

AlisherNavoi was a great poet. He was born in Herat on 9 February 1441. AlisherNavoi got a very good education. He was a good architect and he designed a lot of schools, hospitals, bridges, roads and canals. Navoi's poems in old Uzbek are 'Chor-Devon'. His poems in Persian were collected and called 'Devoni-Foni'. His most important work is the 'Quintuple', five poems from 1483 and 1485. AlisherNavoi lived his last years in Herat. He died on 3 January 1501.
