2) To increase learners' perspectives by getting them to know the countries of the UK and to compare them to their own

The theme of our lesson is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is a great pleasure for me to talk about Great Britain. Many years ago the greatest English poet William Shakespeare said, "Britain is a world by itself." Today we are going to check your knowledge and to know who has the best knowledge and who knows more information about the geography and outlook of the UK. At first, I want you to watch a video "An introduction to Britain" OK students, is everything clear? I'll ask some questions according to the video.

Let's start our task. I'll divide you in 4 groups and you try to work very hard to prove your good knowledge. First of all look I want to give you sheet of papers with texts

Your task is to read the text and get some information about the countries.

Group1: England represents a red cross on a white field. It's Saint George's Cross of England. England is the heart of Great Britain. It' s land is 130,000 sq. km. The population of England is 49 mil. people. The largest cities are Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Nottingham, Sheffield and others. People who live in England are called the English. They speak only English. The famous river Thames is situated in London. The national emblem of England is red rose. The national flag of England represents a red cross on a white field. It's Saint George's Cross of England. England is the heart of Great Britain.

Group2: Scotland is smaller than England but larger than Wales. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. Scotland is the second part of the UK. Its land is 78,800 sq. km. The population of Scotland is 5,3 mil. people. The largest cities are Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee. People who live in Scotland are called the Scottish or Scots. They speak Scottish and English. The biggest rivers are Clyde and Spay. There are a lot of beautiful lakes in Scotland. Nevertheless, the most famous of them are Loch Lomond and Loch Ness. The lake "Loch Ness" is famous all over the world because of its monster. The greatest mountains are Ben Nevis and Grampian Hills.

The national emblem of Scotland is a thistle. The national flag is a blue field with white diagonal crossed stripes on it. It's Saint Andrew's Cross.

Group3: Wales is the smallest country in the UK. The capital of Wales is Cardiff. Its land is 20,800 sq. km. Its population is about 2,8 mil. people. The largest cities are Swansea, New Port. The biggest river is Usk and the biggest lake is Wirnwel. One of the biggest mountain is Snowdon. The national symbol is a yellow daffodil. The national flag is white and green with a red dragon on it.

Group4: Northern Ireland is the fourth country in the UK. Its land is about 14,000 sq. km. The population is about 1,5 mil. people. The capital of the Northern Ireland is Belfast. The largest cities are Ulster and Dublin. The biggest rivers are Shannon, Bun. Northern Ireland is a land of lakes and rivers. The biggest lake is Lough Neigh. People who live in Ireland are the Irish. They speak Irish and English. The national flag of Ireland represents a diagonal red cross on a white field. It's Saint Patrick's Cross. The national symbol is a green shamrock.

Very good! I see that you know the correct pronunciation of words and in addition, what about your knowledge of capitals, people and languages of some countries. I'll ask some questions using the slides. Be attentive.

I think that your knowledge in countries is brilliant.

Great Britain or Albion is an ancient and poetic name for this country, perhaps from the white (Latin "Albus") cliffs of Dover. So where is it situated? I'll explain you about the geographical position of Great Britain using the slides.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles.

The UK consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official name of the state, which is situated in the British Isles. It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north, the North Sea in the east, the English Channel and the Straits of Dover in the south. More than 58 million people live in Britain. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland consists of four countries, which are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

T: Every country has its history; the UK is not an exception. Pages from the history of G.B. in brief will be told using the slides. Now pay your attention, please.

  1. I see that you know much information about the geography of the UK. And now your task is to prove your knowledge in political system of the country. I'll give you cards and your task is to tell me about the queen and the parliament in the UK. I'll give you 5 minutes to prepare. So, we are ready to listen to your representatives Good work!

S6: In Britain the Queen is the Head of State. In fact, the Queen does not rule. She is the symbol of the country. She travels about the UK, meets different people and visits schools, hospitals and other special places.

S7: The real power in the country belongs to the British Parliament and to the British Government. The British Parliament has two houses: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The Houses of Lords doesn't have much power but it is very important as it can offer and change laws, it can delay laws too. The House of Commons makes laws about the policy, taxes and many other things.

S8: The British flag, known as the Union Jack, is a combination of three flags: the Saint George's cross, the Saint Andrew's cross and the Saint Patrick's cross. They represent England, Scotland and Ireland. Wales isn't represented in the Union Flag: the Welsh have their own flag.

VI. T: Let's watch a film "Ten Top attractions of London"

After watching the film, I'll ask some questions.

  1. T: Be attentive, please. I'll read some sentences and you are to give your agreements or disagreements. Let's begin.

VIII. T: Your task is to solve the crossword. I'll give you 3 minutes for work

After greeting, the teacher revises the previous lesson. The teacher prints out some information about the countries of the UK from the internet. First, students brainstorm what they know about given countries. Then the teacher divides them into teams and each team receives a different text. Next, learners regroup so that all students with the same text form a new group; they read their texts together, helping each other understand the content. Then the teacher tells the students to return to their original teams and share what they have learned with the rest of their team so that at the end of the activity each team member possesses all the information. To check the students' knowledge, the teacher randomly asks group representatives to answer questions. At the second stage, the teacher presents her presentation according to the theme. After that, students watch a fragment of a film "Ten top attractions of London" and tell about places of interest in London.

Then students do consolidation exercises. After that, the teacher reads some sentences according to the text and students give their agreement or disagreement. The students work on crossword.
