Christmas

Christmas Day is observed on the 25 of December. Christmas is a religious and one of the happiest holidays of the year. Though Christmas has practically little religious significance for the majority of the population of modern Britain lately, it is still the most widely celebrated festival in all its parts except Scotland, where Hogmanay is preferred. Christmas is the day when many people are travelling home to be with families. This is a traditional family reunion day. It is the most important festival of the year for most British families because it combines the Christmas celebration birth of Christ with the traditional festivities of winter.

On the Sunday before Christmas many churches hold a carol service where special hymns are sung. Sometimes carol-singers can be heard on the streets as they collect money for charity. Schools have Christmas parties. Children sing carols and recite Christmas poems. Christmas trees are not always seen in English families; brightly-coloured paper, holly, ivy, mistletoe and other evergreens are usually used to decorate the rooms.

There are a lot of traditions connected with Christmas but perhaps the most important one is the giving of presents. Family members wrap up their gifts and leave them at the bottom of the Christmas tree to be found on Christmas morning. Children leave a long stocking at the end of their beds on Christmas Eve, hoping that Santa Claus will come down the chimney during the night and bring them small presents, fruit and nuts.

Another important custom of Christmas is to send and receive Christmas cards, in which people wish each other `A Merry Christmas' and `A Happy New Year'.

Pantomimes have been part of the British Christmas for 200 years or more, providing entertainment and amusement for both young and old. The most popular pantomime characters are: Robinson Crusoe, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Red Riding-Hood, Puss in the Boots and Mother Goose.

Each family has a big Christmas dinner in the afternoon or in the evening. They usually eat roast turkey or goose and Christmas pudding. Many people watch the Queen's Christmas broadcast on TV.

In Trafalgar Square, in front of the National Gallery stands an enormous Christmas Tree. It is a gift from the people of Oslo. Every winter they cut down a tree for London. It is over fifty feet high, brightly decorated. Whole families come to Trafalgar Square to enjoy a Christmas tree bigger than any they have ever seen in their lives.
