(Дети читают стихотворение, которое находится на доске, и высказывают свои предположения.)

Three little kittens.
They haven't learnt their English.
And they began to cry,
"Oh Mister Teacher, we sadly fear
Our English we haven't learnt".
"What? Haven't learnt your English?

You naughty kittens.
Then you will get bad marks.
You will be uneducated!
You will be ignorant!"

The three little kittens.
They have learnt their English
And they became so glad.
"Oh Mister Teacher, we are so happy,
Our English we have learnt".

"What? Learnt your English?
You clever kittens,
Now you will have top marks".

You will be educated!
You will be cultured!
You will be erudite!

Teacher: Did you guess the topic?

Class: We are going to speak about the English language.

(Учитель снимает с доски плакат со стихотворением, под которым была записана тема урока.)

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

The English language belongs to the language family known as Indo-European. But English is an unusual language in the Indo-European family because it really comes from three different languages: German, Old Scandinavian and French. The English tribes first came to Britain in the 5th century. They spoke a kind of German. So most of the ordinary words of English come from German, for example, man, house, and, summer.

Later tribes from Scandinavia attacked Britain. These Vikings, as they were called, brought many Scandinavian words into the English language. The verb get and words beginning with sk come from Old Scandinavian: sky, ski, skate.

The biggest change in the language came in 1066. This year is very important in the history of Britain; this is the year of the Norman Conquest. The Normans came from across the English Channel, from France. They conquered Britain under the head of their leader, who later got the name of William the Conqueror. The Normans brought to Britain not only their king, but their French language as well. So, such French words appeared in English as language, parliament, hotel, example.

English has borrowed words from other European languages, too. We get guitar from Spanish, bank from Italian androbot from Czech. In science there are a lot of words from Greek like, helicopter and from Latin, like temperature. English has also taken words from countries further away. Pyjamas and bungalow come from Indian languages. Teacomes from Chinese. Coffee and sugar come from Arabic.

As you see, English has been a great borrower of words. Today a lot of languages borrow words from English.

c) Mark the following statements "TRUE" or "FALSE" You have 5 minutes.

2) Teacher: Why do so many people prefer it to other foreign languages?

Pupils: It - is easier to learn than any other languages;
