TAKING A GAP YEAR , 8-th Form


Lesson objectives: to present and practice new vocabulary on the topic, to match new vocabulary to pictures; to teach students to predict the content of a text and listen and read for gist; to read for specific information; to teach pupils to work together to compete a task and reach a final goal; to develop pupils' creative imagination.

Equipment: CD, video clip "What is Gap Year?", pictures of illustrations to the text, SBs "Starlight 8 Form".

PROCEDURE

  1. INTRODUCTION

T. Hello, my dear students! I am happy you are smiling and I do believe you'll be able to solve all the problems concerning the theme of our lesson today. Look at the blackboard (pictures are stuck). Can you guess the topic of the lesson?

T. To begin with let's watch a short video clip "What is Gap Year?"

T. And then you'll try to guess the goals of our lesson.

S. Today we'll read a text about a Gap Year, learn new vocabulary, talk about different ways of spending a Gap Year.

T. Yes you are right. And by the end of the lesson you'll be able:

- explain why a Gap Year is necessary for school leavers;

- do the survey about your preferences in spending a Gap Year;

- give advice about what is the best way of spending a Gap Year.

T. What was your home task? /checking homework/.

II.Video "What is a Gap Year?" Now children can you explain what a gap year is?

  1. Home task: 1 group - read the text "Taking a gap year";

2 group - make a short story "My best way of spending a gap year".

IV. Listening: Listen and say which of these experiences give the chance to:

I group: help the environment;

II group: help a community;

III group: learn new skills. Ex.1 (a) p. 96

IV. T. Pre-reading activity: look at the pictures and read the first sentence in each text. What do you think each person's experience involved?

V. T. Listen and read to find out. Ex. 2 p/ 96

VI. T. Reading for specific information. Ex. 3 p. 96

VII. Survey: your preferences in spending a Gap Year;

Gap year experience

Coach football at a school in Zambia (or in any other country)

Help rehabilitate injured animals

Drive sled dogs in Siberia

Help build orphanage in China (or in any other country)

Do a massage course in Thailand

Help conserve coral reefs in Fiji

Work on a farm as a farmer

VIII. Cross-over discussion and giving advice about what is the best way of spending a Gap Year.

IX. SUMMING UP
