- умение самостоятельно читать со словарем литературу общебытового характера и по специальности профиля с тем, чтобы на основе приобретенных в вузе знаний, умений и навыков извлекать из нее полную и нужную информацию и при необходимости переводить тексты на родной язык;

- умение сделать монологическое сообщение в размере 18-20 фраз на все темы общебытового характера, предусмотренные программой;

- умение вести беседу диалог на базе изученных тем в объеме 9-10 фраз со стороны обоих собеседников;

- осознавать, распознавать и создавать собственные алгоритмы продуктивной учебной деятельности по изучению иностранного языка;

- выделять главное в текстах на иностранном языке и интерпретировать прочитанное;

- применять логические приемы мышления (аналогия, сравнение, анализ, синтез);

- адекватно осуществлять самооценку и самоконтроль (до, в ходе и после выполнения работы);

- владеть лексическим минимумом в объёме 700-800 лексических единиц;

- уметь распознавать основные грамматические конструкции при работе с текстом (времена, залоги, типы вопросов, модальные глаголы, согласование времен, неличные формы глагола, сослагательное наклонение);

- уметь сделать письменный перевод текста на русский язык;

- уметь вести беседу с преподавателем на темы, определённые программой (не менее 8-10 вопросов и ответов);

- понимать на слух иноязычную речь в предъявлении преподавателя или в записи, построенную на изученном материале;

- воспринимать смысловую структуру текста;

- распознавать значения слов по контексту;

- выделять главную и второстепенную информацию;

- уметь перевести незнакомый текст со словарем (800 печатных знаков);

- интерпретировать содержание прочитанного текста (на русском языке);

- уметь работать со словарем;

How to Make the Most of a Job Interview

1.If you've done your paperwork right, managed to arouse an employer's interest and landed a job interview, your real work is just beginning. It's one thing to impress somebody on paper or over the telephone, but it's another thing to impress in the flesh.

2.A job interview is a business appointment in which everything counts in conveying a good impression. Experts will tell you that advance preparation is the key to interview success.

3.Before you go to a job interview, find out all you can about the company. Depending on the results of your research, you are supposed to prepare an interview outfit that will make you look your very best. In most places you are not expected to wear a Chanel suit, but even if you are fresh from school don't think that your favorite blue jeans, an oversized sweater and a T-shirt will be right for projecting a businesslike image. Many personnel managers will confess that they often turn candidates down for poor appearance; however, your looks alone will not help you get a job unless you are well prepared for the interview. It makes perfect sense to go through your resume once again and make sure you know the dates of important events.

4.Another thing you can do is go through your personal achievements to make up your mind what you might want to present to an interviewer as an impressive argument in your favor. Before the interview, give yourself a good rest , budget your time well, prepare everything you need in advance, so as not to panic and get lost at last minute!

5.Every organization has its own culture and traditions, but there are some things to consider that may help everyone. You know that in many positions your lack of experience is a big disadvantage. You can also compensate for your lack of experience with your qualifications, enthusiasm, ability to learn quickly, and most of all your sense of responsibility. It's natural therefore that if you really want to get this job you must show yourself as a mature individual who is not acting on impulse, but is quite serious about his/her choices. Fight for your place in life: change negative into positive: you are young but you are strong and can learn fast.

3.Define the main idea of the text choosing from the given statements below. Copy it, translate into Russian.

1.Advance preparation is the key to success.

2.Appearance does count.

3.Everything counts.

3.That car appears to have broken down.

4.Lomonosov is known to be the greatest scientist of his time.

Crimea

1.Crimea is a parliamentary republic, within Russia, which is governed by the Constitution of Crimea in accordance with the laws of Russia. The capital and administrative seat of the republic's government is the city of Simferopol, located in the center of the peninsula. Crimea's area is 26,200 square kilometers.

2.According to the Ukraininan 2001 census its population was 2,033,700 people, 58.5% of the population were Russians, 24.4% were Ukrainians, Crimean Tatars made up 12.1%. Belarusians, Tatars, Armenians, Jews and other nationalities live here. Russian, Ukrainian and Tatar are the state languages.

3.Crimea is a peninsula located on the northern coast of the Black Sea and on the western coast of the Sea of Azov, bordering Kherson Oblast from the north. The peninsula consists of many other smaller peninsulas such as Arabat Spit, Kerch peninsula, Herakles peninsula, Tarhan Qut peninsula and many others. Crimea's total land area is 26,100 km2. It is connected to the mainland by the narrow Isthmus of Perekop. Kerch Peninsula in the east is directly opposite the Taman Peninsula. The Strait of Kerch connects the waters of the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov between the Kerch and Taman peninsulas. There are two rural communities of Henichesk Region, Shchaslyvtseve and Strilkove on the smaller peninsula Arabat Spit. The city of Sevastopol has a special legal status within Russia.

4.The major cities are Simferopol (the capital), Sevastopol (a Hero City, a Black Sea Fleet base, is administratively separate), Kerch (a Hero City, an important industrial, transport and tourist centre), Yevpatoria (a major port, a rail hub, and a resort city), Feodosiya (a port and a resort city), Dzhankoy (an important railroad connection), Bakhchisaray (a historical capital of the Crimean Khanate), Krasnoperekopsk and Armyansk (industrial cities), Alushta (a resort city).

5.Geographically, the peninsula is generally divided into three zones: steppes, mountains and southern coast. The comparatively small territory of the Crimean Peninsula has diverse relief, landscape and natural conditions. The greater part of the peninsula is a plain, mountains make up only 5 % of its territory. The Crimean mountains stretch in a curved arc from Sevastopol to Feodosia over a distance of 150 km. They don't let bitter steppe winds into the southern coast. The highest peak of the Crimean mountains Roman Kosh is 1545 metres high. Numerous kurgans, or burial mounds of the ancient Scythians are scattered across the Crimean steppes. There are several bays and harbors on the Crimean coastline (the Bay of Karkinit, the Bay of Kalamita, the ports of Yevpatoria and Sevastopol, the Bay of Arabat and others). The saline Lake Syvash is the natural border between Crimean peninsula and Ukrainian mainland.

6.Most of Crimea has a temperate continental climate, only on the southern coast it is subtropical due to warm influences from the Black Sea. Summers can be hot (28 C/82.4 F Jul average) and winters are cool (−0.3 C/31.5°F Jan average). Because of its climate, the southern Crimean coast is a popular beach and sun resort for Ukrainian and Russian tourists.

7.The territory of Crimea was conquered and controlled many times throughout its history. The Cimmerians, Greeks,Scythians, Goths, Khazars, the state of Kievan Rus', Byzantine Greeks, Ottoman Turks, Golden Horde Tatars and the Mongols controlled Crimea in its earlier history. During the Second War II Crimea was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles. The Axis forces tried to advance through the narrow Perekop Isthmus linking Crimea to the Soviet mainland. The peninsula was freed from the Nazi invadors in 1944.

8.The main branches of the Crimean economy are tourism and agriculture. Industrial plants are situated for the most part in the northern regions of the republic. Important industrial cities include Dzhankoy, housing a major railway connection, Krasnoperekopsk and Armyansk. The most important industries in Crimea include food production, chemicals, mechanical engineering, metal working, fuel production. The main branches of vegetation production include cereals, vegetable-growing, gardening, and wine-making, particularly in Yalta and Massandra regions. Other agricultural forms include cattle breeding, poultry keeping, and sheep breeding.

9.Crimea possesses significant historical and natural resources. According to National Geographic, Crimea is among the top 20 travel destinations in 2013.

The places of interest are Livadia Palace, Mount Mithridat, Scythe's Treasure, Swallow's Nest, Tauric Chersonesos ,Vorontsov's Palace (Alupka) and others.

3.Copy the questions on the text "Crimea", answer them.

- умение самостоятельно читать со словарем литературу общебытового характера и по специальности профиля с тем, чтобы на основе приобретенных в вузе знаний, умений и навыков извлекать из нее полную и нужную информацию и при необходимости переводить тексты на родной язык;

- умение сделать монологическое сообщение в размере 18-20 фраз на все темы общебытового характера, предусмотренные программой;

- умение вести беседу диалог на базе изученных тем в объеме 9-10 фраз со стороны обоих собеседников;

- осознавать, распознавать и создавать собственные алгоритмы продуктивной учебной деятельности по изучению иностранного языка;

- выделять главное в текстах на иностранном языке и интерпретировать прочитанное;

- применять логические приемы мышления (аналогия, сравнение, анализ, синтез);

- адекватно осуществлять самооценку и самоконтроль (до, в ходе и после выполнения работы);

- владеть лексическим минимумом в объёме 700-800 лексических единиц;

- уметь распознавать основные грамматические конструкции при работе с текстом (времена, залоги, типы вопросов, модальные глаголы, согласование времен, неличные формы глагола, сослагательное наклонение);

- уметь сделать письменный перевод текста на русский язык;

- уметь вести беседу с преподавателем на темы, определённые программой (не менее 8-10 вопросов и ответов);

- понимать на слух иноязычную речь в предъявлении преподавателя или в записи, построенную на изученном материале;

- воспринимать смысловую структуру текста;

- распознавать значения слов по контексту;

- выделять главную и второстепенную информацию;

- уметь перевести незнакомый текст со словарем (800 печатных знаков);

- интерпретировать содержание прочитанного текста (на русском языке);

- уметь работать со словарем;

4.Among many cathedrals, now used mainly as museums, are the Cathedral of the Assumption (Успения) and the Archangel Cathedral, each with five gilded domes, and the Cathedral of the Annunciation (Благовещения) (13th-14th century), with nine gilded domes. Another landmark of the Kremlin is the Tower of Ivan the Great, a bell tower 98 m high. On a nearby pedestal is the Tsar's Bell (nearly 200 tons), one of the largest in the world. A recent addition to the Kremlin is the Palace of Congresses, completed in 1961. In this huge modern building were held meetings of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and congresses of the Communist party of the Soviet Union; theatrical and other artistic performances have been held here as well.

The Future of the Engineering Profession

Among various recent trends in the engineering profession computerization is the most widespread. Computers are increasingly used for solving complex problems as well as for handling, storing, and generating the enormous volume of data modern engineers must work with.

Scientific methods of engineering are applied in several fields not connected directly to manufacture and construction. Modern engineering is characterized by the broad application of what is known as systems engineering principles.

Engineers in industry work not only with machines but also with people, to determine, for example, how machines can be operated most efficiently by workers. A small change in the location of the controls of a machine or of its position with relation to other machines or equipment, or a change in the movements of the operator, often results in greatly increased production. This type of engineering work is called time-study engineering.

A related field of engineering, human-factors engineering, also known as ergonomics, received wide attention in the late 1970s and 1980s when the safety of nuclear reactors was questioned following serious accidents that were caused by operator errors, design failures, and malfunctioning equipment.

Human-factors engineering seeks to establish criteria for the efficient, human-centred design of, among other things, the large, complicated control panels that monitor and govern nuclear reactor operations.

Major cities of the USA

1.There are very many large cities in the USA.

Washington, the capital of the United States of America, is situated on the Potomac River. In comparison with such ancient historical cities as, for example, Rome, London, Moscow or Paris, Washington is quite young. The capital owes much to the first President of the USA - George Washington. It was G. Washington, who chose the place for the capital and laid in 1790 the corner-stone of the Capitol, where Congress sits. Washington has many historical places. The largest and highest among the buildings is the Capitol with its great House of Representatives and the Senate chamber. There are no sky-scrapers in Washington because no other building must be higher than the Capitol.

2.New York is the largest city in the USA and the biggest sea-port. It is situated in the mouth of the Hudson River. New York was founded by the Dutch. It is interesting to know that Manhattan Island - the central part of New York - was bought from the local Indians by the Dutch for 24 dollars. That was the most profitable commercial deal in the US history. Today Manhattan is the heart of business and commercial life of the country. New York is the city of skyscrapers. The highest of them is the 102-storeyed building. There are many other places of interest in New York: Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Centre, the shopping districts and the United Nations Building. In Manhattan, at Broadway, there is Columbia University, one of the biggest universities of the USA.

3.Another large city of the USA is Boston, one of the first cities which were built on the Atlantic coast of America. It is an important port and a financial and cultural centre. It has three universities.

4.Chicago is one of the biggest industrial cities in the USA and the second largest after New York, Los Angeles, in California, is the centre of modern industries.

- умение самостоятельно читать со словарем литературу общебытового характера и по специальности профиля с тем, чтобы на основе приобретенных в вузе знаний, умений и навыков извлекать из нее полную и нужную информацию и при необходимости переводить тексты на родной язык;

- умение сделать монологическое сообщение в размере 18-20 фраз на все темы общебытового характера, предусмотренные программой;

- умение вести беседу диалог на базе изученных тем в объеме 9-10 фраз со стороны обоих собеседников;

- осознавать, распознавать и создавать собственные алгоритмы продуктивной учебной деятельности по изучению иностранного языка;

- выделять главное в текстах на иностранном языке и интерпретировать прочитанное;

- применять логические приемы мышления (аналогия, сравнение, анализ, синтез);

- адекватно осуществлять самооценку и самоконтроль (до, в ходе и после выполнения работы);

- владеть лексическим минимумом в объёме 700-800 лексических единиц;

- уметь распознавать основные грамматические конструкции при работе с текстом (времена, залоги, типы вопросов, модальные глаголы, согласование времен, неличные формы глагола, сослагательное наклонение);

- уметь сделать письменный перевод текста на русский язык;

- уметь вести беседу с преподавателем на темы, определённые программой (не менее 8-10 вопросов и ответов);

- понимать на слух иноязычную речь в предъявлении преподавателя или в записи, построенную на изученном материале;

- воспринимать смысловую структуру текста;

- распознавать значения слов по контексту;

- выделять главную и второстепенную информацию;

- уметь перевести незнакомый текст со словарем (800 печатных знаков);

- интерпретировать содержание прочитанного текста (на русском языке);

- уметь работать со словарем;

2.Appearance does count.

3.Everything counts.

2.He is likely to be given this work.

3.That car appears to have broken down.

4.Lomonosov is known to be the greatest scientist of his time.

5.I happened to be in the office when he came.

Job Ads

Checking out job advertisements is popular with executives worldwide. But though the activity is universal, is the same true of the advertisements? Are executive positions in different countries advertised in the same way? First, what UK job seekers consider an essential piece of information what the post pays - is absent from French and German adverts. Most British advertisements mention not only salary, but also other material incentives including a car and fringe benefits. French or German advertisements rarely refer to these. The attention given to rewards in the UK indicates the importance of the job and its responsibility.

In France and Germany, that information is given by the level of experience and qualifications demanded. Salary can be assumed to correspond with this. If French and German adverts are vague about material rewards, they are precise about qualifications. They usually demand 'a degree in..', not simply 'a degree'. In Germany, for example, a technical director for a machine tool company will be expected to have a degree in Mechanical Engineering. French advertisements go further. They may specify not just the type of degree, but sometimes a particular set of institutions. All this contrasts with the vague call for 'graduates' which is found in the UK.

British companies often give the impression that they have a particular type of applicant in mind, but are not sure about the supply and will consider others. Their wording suggests hope and uncertainty. In the UK qualifications beyond degree level make employers nervous, but in France or Germany it is difficult to be 'overqualified'.

The World is not Enough

He's one of the most famous characters in film history and over three billion people have watched him -that's half the world's population! Since 1962 he's been in twenty films, or one film every two years. Who is he? He's Bond ... James Bond.

The British writer, Ian Fleming, created James Bond in 1953. Fleming was a typical English 'gentleman'. He was educated at Eton (an expensive school in England), then worked as a journalist before becoming a banker in London. However, during the war his life completely changed when he worked as a spy in Russia. He wrote most of his novels about his own interesting experiences.

Although the Bond novels were exciting action stories about spies, they didn't become well known until they were made into films. When the first film Or No was shown in Britain in 1962, Fleming became famous. However, it wasn't until Goldfinger in 1964 that James Bond became successful around the world. Goldfinger broke box office records at home and abroad. The phrase `I'm Bond ... James Bond' was recognised all over the world.

Will Bond films continue to entertain us in the future? The answer is probably 'yes'. There will always be James Bond fans because audiences will always enjoy exciting thrillers.

Подчеркните в тексте "The World is not Enough" предложения в пассивном залоге.

Will Bond films continue to entertain us in the future? The answer is probably 'yes'. There will always be James Bond fans because audiences will always enjoy watching exciting thrillers.

Rag Week

One of the most exciting weeks in the student calendar is 'Rag Week'. Universities all over the UK invite students to take part in weird and wonderful events organized by their student union. At Leeds University for example, students can hitchhike to Paris, take part in a fashion show, experience a bungee jump, or do a fire walk. All the events are sponsored, and students usually raise thousands of pounds for charities such as 'Help the Aged' and 'The Children's Heart Surgery Fund'.

So how did it all start? The idea for Rag Week was originally from America and England,' says Student Union President Ella Ford. 'Its main aim has always been to raise money for charity, but it's also a good way to meet people and have some fun!' And what are the most popular activities? 'Fun runs and hitchhiking,' says Ella. 'This year we've been organising a sponsored hitch to Morocco. The journey will be 1,600 miles and once students get there, they'll spend a week teaching English to local children.'

Hitchhiking is one of the harder events, but there are lots of other ways students can help. In fact they can do as little or as much as they like, from helping to run an event like a charity run, to setting up a completely new challenge. 'You don't need to have any experience to help with Rag Week,' says Ella. 'Just some free time, a bit of imagination and a lot of enthusiasm!'

Shopping: a pain or a pleasure?

Some women include shopping in their list of favourite activities. Men traditionally hate it. Here's what some of our readers think.

Aisha, 32

1 like shopping, but it depends who I go with. Trying to shop with young children is a nightmare! I don't like shopping with my husband either because he's always in a hurry, or worries about spending money. But shopping with friends is fun, and I like going on my own too.

Simon, 28

I don't really enjoy shopping. In fact it's a pain! I find it stressful because I'm always afraid of making mistakes. I've got a collection of awful 'mistakes' at the back of my wardrobe, which I never wear! But I don't mind going with my girlfriend, because she helps me choose. I think women are better at buying clothes than men. They've got better taste and they always know what's in fashion.

Ivan, 30

I'm not interested in shopping at all - in fact I hate it. My wife buys all my clothes and brings them home. I try them on and if I like them, I keep them. If not she takes them back. Choosing things from catalogues and the TV shopping channels is the only kind of shopping I enjoy.

Rosa, 24

I love shopping, but not on a Saturday or during the sales, when the shops are really crowded. I prefer shopping alone. Buying things often takes me a long time because I never buy the first thing I see. I always look around other shops to see if I can find the same thing cheaper. I'm quite good at finding a bargain. I hate shopping in large supermarkets, and prefer buying food in small shops or street markets.

`Coke is it'

One of the strongest global products today is 'Coca-Cola'. Coke was originally invented by a pharmacist called Dr Pemberton in 1886. Pemberton produced a syrup for a new drink and accidentally added carbonated water. The result was a soft drink that was called 'both delicious and refreshing'. During its first year Pemberton sold just nine bottles per day, but from these small beginnings 'Coca-Cola' gradually grew into the world's largest manufacturer of soft drinks.

Every day, 'Coca-Cola' products are served more than 1 billion times to people in more than 200 countries. In Great Britain alone over 10 billion 'Coca-Cola' products are consumed each year. In fact in many countries soft drinks have become more popular than traditional drinks. Tea used to be Britain's number one drink, but today the average British person drinks 188 litres of soft drinks a year, but only 157 litres of tea.

Why is 'Coca-Cola' so popular? The main reason is its powerful marketing. The Coca-Cola Company sponsors global events like the FIFA World Cup, Olympic Games and European Championships. People know the 'Coca-Cola' brand. They see it on their televisions, in magazines and on supermarket shelves. Positive slogans such as 'Things go Better with Coke', 'It's the Real Thing' and 'Coke is It' associate 'Coca-Cola' with good experiences and feeling happy. Yet although 'Coca-Cola' is an American company, only a third of its sales are in North America. Most of its sales are from the rest of the world.

Which is the number one global drink? 'Coke' is it.

Thomas Alva Edison

(1847-1931)

Thomas Alva Edison first went to school at the age of eight and a half. But after only three months his teacher called him 'stupid', and he came home crying. From then on, his mother taught him at home, and he read science books by himself.

At the age of twelve he had a job selling newspapers. He made money in a clever but simple way. He checked the news stories first. When the news was interesting, he took a lot of papers; when it was boring, he took only a few.

He got a job sending telegraph messages. Then he started inventing things. He saw ways to make the telegraph system quicker. Later he made a better microphone for Bell's invention, the telephone.

In 1877 he made a 'phonograph' - the first ever sound recorder. The following year he invented the light bulb. In 1889 he made a 'kinetoscope' - a moving picture machine. He also made films for his new machine. In 1903 he made The Great Train Robbery, at that time the world's longest film. (It was ten minutes long!)

After more than one thousand inventions, Edison died at the age of eighty-four. In his honour, they switched off the lights all over America.

- умение самостоятельно читать со словарем литературу общебытового характера и по специальности профиля с тем, чтобы на основе приобретенных в вузе знаний, умений и навыков извлекать из нее полную и нужную информацию и при необходимости переводить тексты на родной язык;

- умение сделать монологическое сообщение в размере 18-20 фраз на все темы общебытового характера, предусмотренные программой;

- умение вести беседу диалог на базе изученных тем в объеме 9-10 фраз со стороны обоих собеседников;

- осознавать, распознавать и создавать собственные алгоритмы продуктивной учебной деятельности по изучению иностранного языка;

- выделять главное в текстах на иностранном языке и интерпретировать прочитанное;

- применять логические приемы мышления (аналогия, сравнение, анализ, синтез);

- адекватно осуществлять самооценку и самоконтроль (до, в ходе и после выполнения работы);

- владеть лексическим минимумом в объёме 700-800 лексических единиц;

- уметь распознавать основные грамматические конструкции при работе с текстом (времена, залоги, типы вопросов, модальные глаголы, согласование времен, неличные формы глагола, сослагательное наклонение);

- уметь сделать письменный перевод текста на русский язык;

- уметь вести беседу с преподавателем на темы, определённые программой (не менее 8-10 вопросов и ответов);

- понимать на слух иноязычную речь в предъявлении преподавателя или в записи, построенную на изученном материале;

- воспринимать смысловую структуру текста;

- распознавать значения слов по контексту;

- выделять главную и второстепенную информацию;

- уметь перевести незнакомый текст со словарем (800 печатных знаков);

- интерпретировать содержание прочитанного текста (на русском языке);

- уметь работать со словарем;

How to Make the Most of a Job Interview".

In 1903 he made The Great Train Robbery,at that time the world's longest film. (It was ten minutes long!)

After more than one thousand inventions, Edison died at the age of eighty-four. In his honour, they switched off the lights all over America.

English is the official language, but it is not the only language which people speak in the country.

Geographically Great Britain is divided into Lowland Britain and Highland Britain. The highest mountain -- Ben Nevis -- is in Scotland. The country is not very rich in natural resources. There are many rivers in Great Britain. The Severn is the longest river, the Thames is the most important one.

For many centuries this country was known simply as England. It had a strong army and navy. It waged numerous colonial wars. In the modern world England was the first country, where capitalism was established.

London is the capital of the UK. It was founded by the Romans. The population of London is over 8 million people. The largest cities of Great Britain besides London are: Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Bristol, Leeds, Edinburgh.

Great Britain is a constitutional monarchy. The powers of the British Queen are limited by Parliament. The British Parliament consists of the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

1.This is an interview for candidates who have done their paperwork successfully.

2.Many personnel managers often turn candidates down only for lack of experience.

3.Things like jeans and T-shirts are not suitable for a business office.
