St. George's Ribbon
St. George's Ribbon is one of the most recognised and respected symbols of military valour ([ˈvælər] до́блесть) in modern Russia. It's called by the name of St. George, the patron ([ˈpeɪtrən] покровитель) of the Russian army. As you know, the ribbon consists of three black stripes and two orange ones. It is believed that the colours represent gunpowder and fire. Today it represents the commemoration of World War II (Great Patriotic War). It is also an important reminder of Russia's heroic past. I have found that the origins of St. George's Ribbon lay back in the times of the Russian Empire. It was introduced as the highest military decoration instituted by Catherine the Great.
Since the 60th anniversary of Victory Day in 2005, the ribbon is worn by civilians in Russia and other former republics of the USSR as an act of remembrance. This symbol awakens in people the patriotic feelings, gives a sense of stability and unity. The motto that goes with it is "We remember! We are proud!" As for me, I am proud of my country - the winner.
