Mark Twain's World.

«All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain

called «Huckleberry Finn».

Ernest Hemingway.

ЦЕЛЬ:

1.Развитие лингвистических способностей учащихся, желания общаться

на английском языке, получая при этом радость.

2.Воспитание этики, культуры взаимоотношений, умения перевопло-

щаться в ролевой игре.

ОБРАЗОВАТЕЛЬНЫЕ ЗАДАЧИ:

1. Увеличить активный языковой запас учащихся.

2. Совершенствовать произношение.

3. Стимулировать в целом интеллектуальную и языковую активность.

ВОСПИТАТЕЛЬНЫЕ ЗАДАЧИ:

1.Развивать у учащихся художественные способности, чувство коллективизма, взаимовыручку.

2. Воспитывать уважение и доброе отношение к стране изучаемого языка, людям.

3 Активизировать познавательную деятельность учащихся.

На сцене коляска. Вокруг нее столпились соседи семьи Клеменс. Звучит запись с приглушенными человеческими голосами. Соседи не могут сдержать своих эмоций.

PI: Oh, he's puny!

Р2: Poor little thing! He'll never live the year out.

P3: What a shame!

На сцену выходит ведущий.

Bl: That was how the neighbours talked when they came to the Clemens cottage to look at baby number five on November30, 1835. And no wonder! Because Samuel Clemens was a weak baby and he stayed weak until he was several years old .Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known to the world as Mark Twain, was born in Florida in the state of Missouri.

На сцене появляется мистер Клеменс.

Р4: I'm Mr. Clemens. I'm part owner of a store in Florida. I earn my living selling groceries and yard goods, needles and nails and everything my neighbors need. I know law, too, but there isn't enough law business in a town as small as Florida.

B2: When Sam was five his family moved to Hannibal. Hannibal was bigger than Florida and Mr. Clemens could be a lawyer there. The people of Hannibal respected him more and more. They gave him their law business. He became an important citizen. He even became a judge and the hard times passed.

На сцене появляется миссис Клеменс

Р5: I'm Mrs. Clemens. I have six children. I spend much time with them. My life is devoted to them. I love my children very much.

Служанка Дженни рассказывает историю о привидениях.

Р6: I'm the maid Jennie. I help about the house. I look after Samuel and other children. And I know wonderful ghost stories. My work is done. I'm free now. Children, come here. I'll tell you a story....Once upon a time there was a man, and he had a wife, and she had an arm of pure gold, and she died, and they buried her in the graveyard; and one night her husband went and dug her up and cut off her golden arm and took it home; and one night a ghost all in white came to his; and she was his wife; and she says, "W-h-e-r-e is my golden arm? Where's my golden arm?

(Дженни осматривает всех медленным взглядом. Неожиданно указывает на одного из детей и говорит «You've got it»)

Р7: When the Clemens moved to Hannibal Sam was five. That meant school. There was no state school in Hannibal. The children went to a private school. There was only one teacher there Mrs. Horr. She taught everybody. Sam was used to running free, and school meant sitting still.

P8: Sam is having a lesson. He is looking out of the window, watching a bird on the window sill ."Sam, go outside and find me a stick. You know what I want it for". (Сэм приносит пучок соломы. Учитель посылает другого ученика за палкой, Сэм получает наказание).

Р9: Sam didn't like going to school. Sometimes he pretended to be ill like Tom Sawyer in his book.

Scene l. Monday Morning. (after Mark Twain)

Persons:

Aunt Polly, her nephews Sid and Tom Sawyer

(Том сидит на кровати. Ищет предлог, чтоб не пойти в школу. Исследует палец руки. Стонет. Сид не реагирует. Он стонет громче.)

ТОМ: Oh, Sid, Sid!

(Сид просыпается, потягивается, смотрит на Тома).

SID: Tom! Say, Тот! (нет ответа). What's the matter, Tom?

(Сид трясет его, с тревогой смотрит в лицо.)

ТОМ: Oh, don't Sid. Don't touch me.

SID: Why, what's the matter, Tom? I must call auntie.

TOM: No, never mind. Don't call anybody.

SID: But I must. Don't groan so, Tom, it's awful. How long have you been this way?

TOM: Hours. Ah! Ah! Oh, don't shake me so, Sid, you'll kill me.

SID: Tom, why didn't you wake me sooner? Oh, Tom, don't. Tom, what is

the matter?

TOM: I forgive you everything, Sid. (стонет). Everything you've ever done to me. When I'm gone…

SID: Oh, Tom, you are not dying, are you? Don't, Tom. Oh, don't. Maybe... ТОМ: I forgive everybody, Sid (стонет). Tell them so, Sid. And Sid, you, give my cat with one eye to that new girl that's come to town, and tell her...

(Сид убегает. Приходит тетя Поли.)

SID: Oh, Aunt Polly, come! Tom is dying!

AUNT POLLY: Dying?

SID: Yes.

AUNT POLLY: Nonsense! I don't believe it. Tom, Tom, what's the matter with you?

TOM: Oh, auntie, I am...

AUNT POLLY: What's the matter with you- what is the matter with you, child?

TOM: Oh, auntie, my sore toe is mortified!

SID: Poor Tom! (Тетя садится в кресло и смеется все громче и громче)

AUNT POLLY: Now, Tom, you shut up that nonsense.

(Том прекращает стонать, чувствует себя глупым).

ТОМ: Aunt Polly, it seemed mortified, and it hurt so I never minded my tooth at

all.

AUNT POLLY: Your tooth, indeed! What's the matter with your tooth?

TOM: One of them is loose, and it aches perfectly awful.

AUNT POLLY: There, there, now, don't begin that groaning again. Open

your mouth. Well- your tooth is loose, but you are not going to die about that.

Sid, bring me a silk throat, and a chunk of fire out of the kitchen.

TOM: Oh, please, auntie, don't pull it out. It doesn't hurt any more. Please

don't, auntie, I don't want to stay home from school.

AUNT POLLY: Oh, you don't, don't you? So all this row was because you

thought you would stay home from school and go fishing? Tom, Tom, I love

you so, and you seem to try every way you can to break my old heart with

your cruelty.

(Сид приносит инструменты. Один конец нитки привязывает к зубу, другой к спинке стула, подносит неожиданно огонь, Том дергается и зуб вырван).

AUNT POLLY (отдает ему зуб): Here you are. And now start getting ready or you'll be late again.

P10: Samuel's best friend was Tom Blankenship. Tom wore old clothes and never had to dress up. He knew everything about fishing and hunting. He knew everything about the Mississippi River, about canoes and rafts, about the islands out in the river.Sam and Tom became friends fast. They met in secret after school and even at night.

PI: Of course, there were girls in Hannibal. They came to school, they came to church. Out of school they went their own way and played their own kinds of games.

Once Sam Clemens went walking with Laura Hawkins whose house was just across the street from his. Sam could behave like a gentleman when he was with Laura. Sam and Laura both liked flowers. Sam and Laura liked to go hunting for flowers, especially the first flowers of spring.

(Звучит музыка. Сэм и Лора исполняют танец среди цветов).

Р2: Do you want to know how Tom and Becky got acquainted?

(Scene 2. Tom Gets Acquainted with Becky). ( after Mark Twain)

Mr. Dobbins Becky Thatcher Tom Sawyer Classmates

(Учитель ведет урок. Одно место свободно за партой, где сидят девочки. Стук в дверь. Заходит Том Сойер).

MR. DOBBINS: Thomas Sawyer!

TOM: Sir.

MR. DOBBINS: Come up here. Now, sir, why are you late again, as usual?

TOM: I stopped to talk with Huckleberry Finn!

(Учитель шокирован).

MR. DOBBINS: You... you did what?

TOM: Stopped to talk with Huckleberry Finn!

MR. DOBBINS: Thomas Sawyer, take off your jacket, (учитель наказывает его). Now, sir, go and sit with the girls! And let this be a warning to you.

(Том садится рядом с девочкой. Она отворачивается. Он ей предлагает яблоко. Она его выбрасывает. Он начинает рисовать и закрывает свою работу левой рукой. Она пытается подсмотреть).

BECKY: Let me see it. I like this house. It's nice- make a man.

TOM: I'll try. (рисует, отдает ей рисунок)

BECKY: It's a beautiful man-now make me coming along.

(Том продолжает рисовать, затем показывает рисунок Бекки).

TOM: Do you like it?

BECKY: It's so nice. -I wish I could draw.

TOM: It's easy. I'll teach you.

BECKY: Oh, will you? When?

TOM: At noon. Do you go home to dinner?

BECKY: I'll stay if you will.

TOM: Good. What's your name?

BECKY: Becky Thatcher. What's yours? Oh, I know. It's Thomas Sawyer.

TOM: Yes, that's the name they call me by when they punish me. I'm Tom when I am good. You call me Tom, will you?

BECKY: Yes.

(Том что-то пишет).

BECKY: Tom, let me see what you have written.

TOM: Oh, it is not anything.

BECKY: Yes, it is.

TOM: No, it isn't. You don't want to see.

BECKY: Yes, I do, indeed I do. Please let me. TOM: You'll tell.

BECKY: No, I won't. I won't tell anybody.

TOM: You won't tell anybody at all? Even, as long as you live?

BECKY: No, I won't even tell anybody. Now let me.

(Она тянет лист бумаги, пока не видит слова).

ТОМ (читает): I love you.

BECKY: Oh, you bad thing! (Она ударяет его по руке, но ей, тем не менее, приятно).

РЗ: Samuel was 12 when his father died. His father left nothing to his wife and children. Sam had to leave school and look for work. A few years later his elder brother bought a newspaper and the two young men began to publish it themselves. People enjoyed reading about their neighbours and friends.

P4: When he was 18 he left Hannibal to look for something better in the big cities. For more than a year he travelled to Saint Louis, New York, Philadelphia. Then he came back home. He was only 19- he dreamed of a more exciting life, he wanted to travel and see the world.

P5: At 20 he found a job on a boat travelling up and down the Mississippi. He learned the work of a pilot. Day and night passengers could hear his voice «Mark three», "Mark Twain". He used the old English word" twain" instead of "two". It meant the water was up to the second mark on the line, that it was deep enough, and the ship could go forward.

Then he worked with the gold- miners in California, as a journalist for a newspaper. He tried many professions.

In 1870 he married and a new and happy life began for him. He had one son and three daughters.

P6: The Clemens family had a lot of fun together. Sam Clemens always had plenty of time to play with his children. They made him tell a story, i.e. "A Dog".

A DOG. ( after Mark Twain)

Persons:

Narrator,General Miles, an old man, a dog

NARRATOR: I am very poor. Very often I have no money even for bread.

One day I needed three dollars. I do not remember what I wanted the money for, but I needed it very much. I come to a big hotel.

(Садится иа стул. Забегает собака, кого-то ищет. Бедняк с ней играет. Заходит генерал Майлз).

GENERAL: What a beautifiil dog! Is it your dog? Do you want to sell it?

NARRATOR: Well. I... I think...

GENERAL: That's good. How much do you want for it?

NARRATOR: Three dollars.

GENERAL: Three dollars? But that is very little. I can give you fifty dollars for it.

NARRATOR: No, no. I want only three dollars.

GENERAL: Well, it's your dog. If you want three dollars for it, I'll be glad to buy your dog.

(Генерал платит деньги, берет собаку и уходит. Спустя некоторое время заходит старик. Он ищет что-то).

NARRATOR: Are you looking for a dog, sir?

OLD MAN: Oh, yes, have you seen it?

NARRATOR: Your dog was here a few minutes ago and it went away with a man. If you want I'll try to find it for you.

OLD MAN: Please help me.

NARRATOR: I'll be glad to help you, but it'll take some off my time and..

OLD MAN: I'm really ready to pay you for your time. How much do you want?

NARRATOR: Three dollars.

OLD MAN: Three dollars. But it's a very good dog. I'll pay you ten dollars if you find it for me.

NARRATOR: No, sir, I want only three dollars and not a dollar more.

(Идет в комнату к генералу). NARRATOR: I have come to take the dog back.

GENERAL: But it isn't your dog now. I have bought it. I have paid you three dollars for it.

NARRATOR: I'll give you back your three dollars but I must take the dog back.

GENERAL: But you have sold it to me. It's my dog now.

NARRATOR: I couldn't have sold it to you, sir, because it wasn't my dog.

GENERAL: Do you want to tell me that you took three dollars for a dog that wasn't yours?

NARRATOR: I took the money but I never told you... that it was my dog.

GENERAL: But you have sold it to me for three dollars.

NARATOR: How could I have sold it to you if it wasn't my dog? You asked how much I wanted for the dog and I said that I wanted 3 dollars. But I never told you that it was my dog.

GENERAL: Give me back my three dollars and take the dog(кричит).

OLD MAN: Oh, thanks. Take your three dollars.

NARRATOR: That is how I earned the money.

P7: Mark Twain's favourite game was billiards. He loved to talk, to make speeches at banquets or in theatres. He could talk on and on.

P8: One of his hobbies was fishing. He went fishing whenever he had a chance, even in the closed season, when fishing was not allowed anywhere in lakes and rivers.

One hot day during the closed season Mark Twain was fishing as usual under a low bridge.

A MAN: Have you caught many fish?

MARK TWAIN: Not yet. I have only just begun. But yesterday I caught thirty great big fish here.

THE MAN: You were very lucky. Do you know who I am?

MARK TWAIN: No, I don't think I ever happened to meet you before.

THE MAN: I'm the fishing inspector in this place. Do you know that this is the closest season?

MARK TWAIN: Do you know who I am?

THE MAN: No, of course not.

MARK TWAIN: I'm the biggest liar on the Mississippi.

P9: The most famous Mark Twain's novels now known to children and grown-ups all over the world are "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' and "The Prince and the Pauper".

P1: The profession of a writer did not bring much money to Mark Twain and he had to give lectures on literature and read his stories to the public. He visited many countries and for a long time lived in England.

P2:He died in 1910. He was almost 75 years old. His travels and adventures were ended.

P3: Mark Twain once called Joan of Arc " that wonderful child, that sublime personality". Those same words can be written of Mark Twain.

P4: We've talked quite a lot about Mark Twain today. It's very pleasant to see that all of you like him and know something about him. Now let's do a crossword about Mark Twain.
