St.Valentine's Day

День Святого Валентина (английский язык)

There are twenty-eight or twenty-nine days in February. The 14th of February is called St.Valentine's Day. (Valentine's Day is celebrated on the 14th of February). St.Valentine is the saint patron of those who are in love.

Every February 14, millions of people buy or make special Valentine cards and send them to those whom they love: husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, teachers and friends. On this day you can buy cards in shops, or you can make cards yourselves. The cards, known as Valentines, are often designed with hearts to symbolize love. Valentine cards are usually decorated with symbols of love and friendship: white laces, ribbons, birds, blue forget-me-nots and red roses, red hearts and cupids1. You send a card to the person with whom you are in love. But people don't usually sign [sain] their cards (traditionally these cards are not signed) - you have to guess who sent the cards to you. Boys and girls, husbands and wives, relatives and friends send cards to each other. There are different cards to suit all tastes.

St.Valentine's Day is popular in many countries of the world (in most of the European countries and in America). Its popularity is growing and perhaps soon the day will be celebrated all over the world. Many people in Russia also celebrate it.

Schoolchildren always send Valentine's cards to each other, they drop them into the bag, or put them in the desk, or just drop them on the floor, as somebody is going past, and then run away. At present, there are usually decorated cardboard boxes at schools, parties and so on. The slips of paper with names written on them are dropped into a Valentine box. It has also become traditional to put verses into the Valentine box - be ready to drop a small poem into it.

You may write something like this:

I love you, darling!

To my darling Valentine!



Will you be my Valentine?

Just a little note to say,

The rose is red;

The violets are blue,

The honey is sweet

And so are you.



Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

This little heart

Means I love you.

This is the key to my heart

Use it before I change the lock.



Sometimes, all my heart needs...

is YOU.



I'll be your sweetheart

And you will be mine,

All of my life

I'll be your Valentine.



Love you, my dear, very much,

So here's a great big kiss.

For the nicest person in the world -

- The one who's reading this!



Fall comes after summer,

And you can fall from above,

But the best fall of all

Is to fall in love!
