1 It was the year 320. Rome was ruled by the emperor Licinius, a pagan. He issued an edict that proclaimed that all Christians in the eastern part of the Empire were to give up their faith or they would be killed. Among those affected by this edict, there were the forty members of the Rome legion. They were stationed in Sebastea, Armenia (today Sivas, Turkey). They were known for the "all for one, one for all" spirit and were famous for bravery and quickness in battles. All of them were Christians. The soldiers made their fateful decision together; they would all refuse the emperor's command. Their superiors tried to reason with them for they didn't want to lose such a fine group of soldiers. 2. Choose the best title (заголовок) to the part 1:

-
Why were fires made and warm baths prepared?
-
How could any of the forty legionnaires become a good citizen of the Roman Empire?
2
The forty legionnaires were put into prison for the breach of military discipline. How did they dare to refuse the emperor's command? The Roman judges devised a particularly cruel punishment for the forty soldiers.
First, they were ordered to be stripped of weapons and clothes. Once naked, they were herded into a frozen lake and left there to freeze in the cold. Nearby, though, fires were made and warm baths prepared in a place where the legionnaires could easily see them.
The pagans hoped that they would prefer the comfort of the warm baths to their cold torment.
Any who did so would be spared and could become a good citizen of the Roman Empire.
