MARCO POLO

In 1298 a Venetian adventurer Marco Polo wrote a book about his travels In the Far East. Even Columbus nearly 200 years later consulted this book.

Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy in 1254. His father and uncles were merchants who travelled to distinct lands to trade. In 1271 they took Marco wiih lliem.

From Venice the Polos sailed to Palestine. They crossed the deserts of Pcrcia and Afghanistan, mounted the hights of Pamirs.Early in 1275 when Marco was 21 they arrived at Kublai Khan's count at Cambalue in Peking, China. J

The khan of Persia asked Kublai Khan for a young Mongol Princess for a bride. The Polos decided that the Princess's journey should be guarded by IXperienced travellers. Because of the danger from robbers and enemies of the Khan a great fleet of ships was built.

fin 1292 the fleet sailed with the Polos, the princess and 600 noblemen. Theships visited Ceylon and India and touched the East African coast.

Неопределенный АРТИКЛЬ - article ['a:tikl] -ставится перед существительным в ед.числе. Артикли бывают:

1. Неопределенный (in'definite article) - "а" [Ә] - - a book, a pen , a woman, a boy; если существительное начинается с гласной буквы то артикль меняется на an : an apple - яблоко, an egg - яйцо

2. определенный артикль ('definite article) "the" [бә] - "theos-►this" - это

От местоимения и ставится перед существительными: the boy - мальчик, my mother=the mother мама.

III. The main part: THOMAS COOK

Thomas Cook was born in 1809 and lived in Leicester in the centre of] England. Thomas Cook was the first person who developed mass tourism. Many excursions and tours, which opened up the words of travelling fori pleasure to the middle classes, were organized by him| Cook believed than travel would broaden the mind. His success of the travel business wasj phenomenal.

The English Channel, France and Switzerland, Egypt were popular] destinations for Cook's tours./When he reached the age of 63 he still desired to travel round the globe. So, in the early 1870 the first round the world tour was organized.^He set off from Liverpool on the steamship Oceanic. He was impressed by the American railroad, its open carriages, sleeping cars, on­board toilets and efficient baggage handing. Japan delighted him by its "beauty and rich fertility". He was shocked by "narrow filthy streets" of China and had another culture shock in India, which was also "filthy and revolting". By the time he left Bombay for Egypt he was tired and in 1873 wrote to "The Times" that he wouldn't travel over the world again that "after 32 years of travelling with the view of making travelling easy, cheap and safe for others and ought to rest" he wrote.

THE UK

I. The UK is the shortened word of the United Kingdom of Great Britain
hi til Northern Ireland. Great Britain includes England, Scotland, and Wales
,nul Northern Ireland. Although Britain is a unitary state, the countries of
Britain have separate national identities, variations in culture and tradition.

England is a lowland country with the Pennine Chain, the Cumbrian BV Minlains and the Yorkshire moorlands in the north.

Wales is a country of hills and mountains. Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis (1,343 m, 4,406 ffHs in the central highlands of Scotland. Northern Itrland is at its nearest point only 21 km (13 miles) from Scotland.

2. Britain has frequent Weather changes through the seasonal cycle of winter, spring, summer and autumn. Rainfall is well distributed llnoughout the year.

London Sightseeing Tour

London is the capital of the UK. There are a lot of interesting places to see in London. For example: Trafalgar Square. There is a statue of Admiral Nel­son who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafal­gar in 1805. He is a national English hero. There is no traffic in the square.

Buckingham Palace is the London home of the Queen. When the flag is on the top she is at home. Here you can see changing the guard. It happens every day at 11.30 a. m.

House of Parliament is the seat of the British Government. It's a very large building with beautiful towers. Big Ben is one of the most famous clocks in the world. It was named after Sir Benjamin Hall. The clock was made under his direction.

Westminster Abbey is a Royal Church. Here you can see many tombs of British Kings and Queens and other famous people, such as: Charles Dickens, Walter Scott, and Thomas Hardy.

Tower of London was a fortress, a royal palace, later a prison. Now it is a museum. Many tourists come to visit London and see all these places.

Exercise 4 Read the text and complete the chart below.

Britain has a population of about 59 million people. The great majority, 49.3 million live in England; Scotland has just over 5 million people, Wales 2,9 million and Northern Ireland about 1,7 million.

England is the most densely populated, with 373 people per sq. (square) km, and Scotland is the least, with 67 people per sq. km. The great majority of people are concentrated in towns and cities.

The average age of women having children has risen to over 28 years in lingland and Wales.

Life expectancy for men in Britain is about 74 years and for women 79 years. The general death rate is 10.4 per 1,000 of the population.

Britain has one of the highest marriage and divorce rates in the Huropean Union. There are 309,000 marriages each year in Britain, of which about 40 per cent are remarriages of one or both parties. Of the population aged 16 or over in England and Wales 55 per cent are married, 28 per cent are single, 9 per cent are widowed and 8 per cent are divorced. The average for first marriages in England and Wales is now 29 for men and 27 for women.

There is a growing number of non-married relationships.

ELDERLY PEOPLE

The retirement age is 65 for men and 60 for women in Britain. Most elderly people in Britain live healthy and independent lives. Nearly all want to be a part of the community, living in their own homes. Adult educational and recreational courses are well attended by elderly people.

In fact, only about 5 per cent of people aged over 65 in Britain live In an institutional accommodation. These services may include advice and help from visiting social workers. Day centres and lunch clubs are very popular among older people as they provide a hot meal and laundry.

YOUNG PEOPLE

The home is the central focus of most young people's lives in Britain, particularly for those who are still attending schools. The majority rely upon their home environment as a place of security and upon their parents as the main providers of food, money and general advice. Young people spend much of their leisure time in the home with other members of their family or with friends.

After the home, school is the main social environment.

The social education of young people aged 11-25 is also promoted by the Youth Service in Britain.

Youth clubs and centers are the most common types of Youth Service.

The Queen was born in London on 21 April 1926, the first child of King George and Queen Elizabeth. Five weeks later she was christened Eliza­beth Alexandra Mary in the chapel at Buckingham Palace. The Princess's early years were spent at 145 Piccadilly, in London and the country homes of grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary.

EDUCATION

Princess Elizabeth was edu­cated at home with Princess Margaret, her younger sister. PRINCE PHILLIP

Prince Philip was born on 10 June 1921. He was the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece.

The Prince came to Britain at an early age to be educated. He attended a school, in Scotland, and the Royal Naval College. During the Second World War he served at the sea.

The Prince plays an active part in national life and acts as president or patron of some 800 organizations.

WINDSOR CASTLE

Windsor Castle is an official residence of the Queen and the largest castle in the world. A royal palace and fortress for over 900 years, the Castle remains a working palace today.

After five years.' intensive work the restoration of Windsor Castle was completed six months ahead of schedule on November 1997 at a cost of £37 million (US $59.2 million).

To mark the completion The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh held a 'thank you' reception in the restored rooms on 14 November 1997.

The Queen's diary of engagements is very busy. The New Year begins with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in residence at Sandringham, the Queen's private home in Norfolk. Her official work is combined with time for

riding and reading.

The Queen, whose actual birthday is in April, celebrates her "official"

birthday in June.

The Queen holds the first of each summer's garden parties in the Palace of Edinburgh; three more are held in the gardens of Buckingham Palace.

The summer break is spent at the Queen's private home in Scotland, Balmoral Castle, and is followed by the regular autumn schedule - the State Opening of Parliament.

A day in December is always set aside for the Queen to record her radio and television Christmas broadcasts. She speaks personally to the Commonwealth.

*The Queen and The Parliament

The terms " the Sovereign " (or "Monarch") and the Crown' are related but have separate meanings:

• The Sovereign is the person in whom the Crown is constitutionally conferred (confer [kan'fa:] v - cbriway, cbiwra TapTy, 6epy);

• The Crown, which represents both the Sovereign and the Government, is the symbol of supreme executive power. The Crown is vested in the Queen but in practice its functions are carried out by ministers responsible to Parliament. Britain is therefore governed by Her Majesty's Government in the name of the Queen.

The Queen summons and dissolves Parliament. She normally opens the new session with a speech from the throne about her Government's program. If she cannot attend, the Queen's speech is read by the Lord Chancellor.

Another important role of Sovereign is appointing the Prime Minister. The Sovereign invites the leader of the party which commands a majority in the House of Commons to form a government. The Queen has the duty of selecting a Prime Minister.

By tradition, The Queen takes an abbreviated from of the Latin description when she signs formal and official documents and messages, using the signature 'Elizabeth R' (which stands for "Regina' or Queen).

*Queen and Commonwealth

Queen Elizabeth II is not only the Queen of the United Kingdom but also Queen of Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, St. Christo­pher - Nevis, St. Luchia, St. Vincent and Grenadines, the Solomon Islands and the Tuvalu.

The majority of the Commonwealth countries are republics, with a president as head of State, but like the Commonwealth monarchies all acknowledge the Queen as Head of the Commonwealth.

KAZAKHSTAN IS MY MOTHERLAND

Kazakhstan was established as the Republic of Kazakhstan in December 1991. The country is the second largest of the former Soviet republics with a total land area of over 2.724 million square kilometres. This country shares its border with the Russian Federation to the north and north-west; to the east with China and to the south with the central Asian republics of Kirgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

The Ural River flows through the western portion of Kazakhstan to the ('aspian Sea. The central region of the country includes the Kazakh Steppe (o the north and deserts of central Asia in the south-west.

The country is rich with mineral resources such as copper, gold, iron, lead, nickel, silver, tin, uranium and zink with deposits of oil and natural gas.

Kazakhstan's largest city is Almaty which lies to the south-east of the country near the border with Kirgyzstan and China. Almaty was the capital until December 1997 when it was moved to Akmola, 850 kilometres to the north-west. In May 1998 Akmola was renamed Astana, the Kazakh word for capital. Astana's population stands currently at 500,000.

Peaceful and generous, the land of the Kazakhs has always been famous for its hospitality. And it is not by accident, located on the crossroads of two ancient cultures - Europe and Asia.

Today, residents are happy to share their famous hospitality and to show (he visitors the Alatau mountains with famous Medeu.

Berkutchi - professional hunters - took balobans' chickens out of their nests and trained them for hunting This tradition still exist. The BRITISH ATTITUDES TO ANIMALS AND THEIR TREATMENT

I here are six and a half million dogs and six to eight million cats in Britain. This means that approximately one in ten people owns a dog or a cat. They support over 380 charities and societies which aim to protect animals. These include donkey sanctuaries, horses' rest homes, and dog and cat sanctuaries. The RSPCA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the rest animal welfare society in Britain. It provides practical help to animals m homes, hospitals and clinics….

TYPICAL KAZAKHSTAN PLANTS

Blue Spruce

The blue Tien Shan spruces are a true decoration of the Alatau mountains. Like candles, they rise upwards reaching heights of 40-50 metres.

Saxaul

In the steppes of Kazakhstan one can find another plant - the saxaul bush with its soft leaves. In unusually dry periods, the saxaul sheds its leaves, which fall on the sand. But as soon as the rain comes, the plant actively grows again.

The bush can be seen in the regions from Almaty to Astana and Karaganda.

The Villagers and the Boy

Some people who lived in a village had many fine sheep. But there was a wolf who lived in the forest. The wolf was always trying to catch the sheep and eat them.

So the villagers gave money to a boy and said, "Watch the sheep in the field all day. If you see the wolf, shout to us for help!"

Very soon the boy ran to the village. "Help!" he called. "Wolf! Wolf!"

Some men were working on a farm. They heard the boy's shouts.

"We are coming!" they shouted in answer.

But when they came to the boy, they could not see the wolf. The sheep were eating grass.

The boy laughed as much as he could. "That was a good joke," he said. "There are no wolves here. You have run for nothing." The men were very angry with the boy.

The next day, the boy took the sheep to the other side of the village. When he wanted to lie in the grass he saw a wolf. "Help!" he shouted. "Help! Wolf! Wolf A wolf is attacking the sheep!"

The boy ran to the village, shouting "Help! Help!" But nobody came.

"This is another joke," they all said.

The wolf killed many of the sheep. The men caught the boy and punished him for losing the sheep.

THE CITY OF APPLES

Almaty is an unusual city. It is a green city. American Rockwell Kent upon arriving in Almaty in the 1960s wrote "Alma-Ata is surely a premier city for its green decoration. It seemed to me I was walking through a forest. Buildings are entirely hidden by trees". The city is decorated with numerous parks and gardens, fountains and flower-beds. The word "almaty" means "with apple" in Kazakh. Previously, the city was called Alma-Ata that is "father of apples" Anyhow, meaning of the name city has always been connected with the word

pie". The ancient town of Almaty was an oasis along Silk Road right where modern Almaty is situated. Traces of ancient town are still found in the centre Almaty. Almaty was the capital of Kazakhstan until November 1997. Astana is the new capital of the republic. However, throughout the President's Decree of October 20, 1997 Almaty has got the special status of the republican city. With the new status the city became a small state in a state - "a

peculiar Hong Kong". It hosts various international events and it remains the premier scientific and CULTURAL center of Kazakhstan.

OLD SQUARE

The Old Square is on Tole Bi; Street, between Panfilov Street and Abylai Khan Avenue. Its style ii somewhat different than that of the Republic Square. It was planned in 1957 at one of the Moscow architecture workshops. This was the former building for the House of Parliament. It is surrounded by lovely parks and fountains.

Central State Museum of Kazakhstan is located in Samal-1 I district. It was built in 1986.

The Central Museum is the home of the Republic's richest collection. The history of Kazakhstan comes alive in 120,000 items permanently exhibited in its four halls.

One of the attractions is a collection of gifts and souvenirs; presented to President Nursultan Abishuly Nazarbaev by leaders of other I states and famous people.

b) Kasteyev Museum of Fine Arts

The museum is named after Abilkhan Kasteyev (1904-1973), the first Kazakh professional artist.

The museum's 14 halls present 1,500 works of fine and applied arts. Major \ halls focus on the Kazakh applied arts; Kazakh fine arts of 1930-1997 century.Russian fine arts of the 17^th century; European fine arts of the 16^th century and modern sculpture. It also has a rich collection of sides showing the world's masterpieces of architecture and painting. There are four restora­tion workshops in the museum. Guided tours in English, French, German, Kazakh and Russian are available.

Ykhlas Republican Museum of Folk Musical Instruments

'The museum was founded in 1980. The museum has about 60 different types and varieties of Kazakhstan folk musical instrument. Many belonged to famous Kazakh improvising singers, poets and composers, such as Birzhan-sal, Abai, shambyl, and a woman-akyn Dina. The museum is located near the Military History Museum in shady and beautiful park of the 28 Panfilov's Guardsmen. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 9 a.m-6p.m, admission charge.

Books museums

The museum was founded in 1977. Its expositions show the history of the development of Kazakh written language, book-printing and modern publishing in Kazakhstan. Over 20.000 items are displayed including rare books in the original and manuscripts , book-plates, posters and maps.

Geological Museum

This museum presents collection of the minerals and rocks which occur in Kazakhstan's land. The museum also has a salon selling jewelry and rock collections. It is a good place for visitors to buy souvenirs, jewelry. The museum also arranges five day geological tours over the Zailiisky Alatay region

Nature museum

The nature museum is a section of the Zoology Research Institute of the Academyof Sciences. It offers two displays on paleontology and zoology. The paleontology features some very interesting exhibits with fossilized skeletons of animals and petrified wood found in the territory of Kazakhstan dating back to early geological epochs.

Central Recreation

It's located at the end of Gogol Street eastern part of the city.

The first saplings (young trees) for the park were bought from the Chu Valley Now, it is the most popular park where residents and visitors enjoy their time among its 100 hectares of picturesque lanes and flower-beds. The 28 Panfilov's Guardsmen Park

Koktyube ("green hill") is 1,070 meters high above the sea level. It is covered with grass and bushes. On its top, there is an observation deck from where a beatiful panorama of Almaty is seen. It is the best place to view the city scene at night with its glimmering lights. One can get to the top by the electric tramway which connects Koktyube with Abai square on Dostyk avenue. The Koktyube summit accommodates several nice restaurants and cafes.

Television Tower

The TV complex is located on the slopes of Koktyube. It is 1,000 m. The observation deck sits at the height of 140 meters. The tower is crowned with a 114 meter high metal aerial. It is also equipped with two high-speed elevators.

The zoo

The Almaty Zoological Garden was founded in 1937 by the famous: naturalist Maxim Zverev. It has a rich collection of animals and birds from around the world, plus a breeding laboratory where rare and endangered animals and birds are studied. The Zoo's collection has 95 species of mammals, 150 species of birds, 80 species of fish, 17 species of reptiles among its total of 4,000 specimen. The park of home to a collection of animals is included in the International Red Book of rare or endangered animals. There is also a collection of Kazakhstan's own rare and endangered animals. These are: Tien Shan bear, Pink pelican,Black stork, flamingo, Sea eagle, Steppe eagle.

MEDEU

The world's famous skating rink Medeu was built in 1972 in a picturesque gorge located 15 km. from Almaty. Its 10,500 sq. meter ice area is the best place for outdoor world competitions in speed skating, Russian hockey figure skating and other sports event! Special refrigerating equipment provides the ice-cover of the skating field 8 months a year and ice tracks are kept ready for skating all year¹ round. Over 120 world records have been set there by the world's strongest skaters. It is open for public skating December through March. Admission: about US $4. Skates rent are available on the first floor outside of the rink. A hotel (the Premier Medeu ) is located near the rink. At 1691-metel above sea level, nature lover will find beautiful mountain scene) surrounding the skating rink. The Medeu Gorge is bordered by mountain ridges: Kim asars on the west, Kabyrgatau on its east, and Kunbel on the south-east. A road runs through Medeu gorge towards the Mynzhylky gorge. The gorge has 21,000 hectare of forests with birches, Tien Shan spruces, and mountain ashes.

One of the attractions is a dike built in the valley of the Kishkene Almaty River to protect the city from landslides. The dike's collector has an impressive capacity of 6,000,000 cubic meters of water. It is this dike that has kept back a disastrous landscape in 1973.

SHYMBULAK

Mountain ski resort Shymbulak is situated at 2200-2500 meters in the picturesque Shymbulak Gorge. It is remarkable for its mild climate with a lot If sunny days. The average December temperature is -6.3°C.

After a snowfall, its powder is as good as anywhere else in the world. The resort has a five story hotel and cottages nearby for rent

Talgar peak is the highest peak. It is 4973-meter high. The first ascent of Talgar peak was performed in 1935. It also has some of the most scenic hiking. CULTURE

A lot of traditional Kazakh culture is preserved in its epic, heroic and lyric compositions, fairy-tales and songs. People still remember the aitys - a contest of singers where akyns, seri and saly (improvising gingers) compete in humor, sature and in improvising rhymes before an audience.

The most famous representatives of Kazakh culture, both in Europe and Kazakhstan, were Abai Kunanbaev, Shokan Ualikhanov, Shakarym Kudaibergenov, and Ibrai Altynsarin. At the end of the 19^th century, such public figures as Alikhan Bukeikhanov, Myrzhakyp Dulatov, and Akhmet Baitursynuly were known as the publicists. The most well-known 19^th century Kazakh composer was Kurmangazy. Among contemporary ones are Akhmed Zhubanov, Khamidi and Evgeny Brusilovski. Shaken Aimanov was a very talented actor and the first director and head of the "Kazakhfilm" studio. During World War II the main Russian cinema studios moved to Almaty. The Kazakhstan national art gallery is named after its famous artist Abilkhan Kasteyev (1904-1973). Cut beef or mutton heart, kidneys, liver, lungs. Place them in sepa­rate containers. Peel an onion and 5-6 potatoes and cut them into 1 xl cm blocks. In a kazan (deep frying pan) melt 50-80 grams of fat, add lungs and fry 5 to 7 minutes. Then add kidneys, heart and meat. In 20 minutes add onion, liver and potatoes and fry stirring until pieces are evenly done. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve imme­diately.

Wedding ceremony

In Kazakh tradition, the wedding lasts 40 days beginning with matchmaking. Either the fiancé sends matchmakers to his bride's parents, or he abducts his fiancée. In the first case the matchmakers, who are the fiancé's relatives, bring rich gifts to the bride's parents and ask their consent
to the marriage. This negotiation is called the cuda tusu.

If the bride's parents agree, then they fix the date for the wedding day.

Sometimes it is the bride who has the right to choose in accept the offer. Instead of a direct refusal, the girl would give the man some difficult task. A legend tells about such a case. Abylai Khan fell in love with a beautiful girl from a poor family. But she already has her intended - an ordinary warrior. As do not hurt the Khan's feelings and bring his anger on her family, the girl asked the Khan to shoot an arrow beyond the mountain near a lake.

HORSE GAMES

Kazakh traditional horse-sport games like Kokpar, Kyz Kuu and others pave always been very popular with Kazakhs. At present, they can be observed during national holidays and festivals.

Kokpar

In addition to traditional horse-races during festivals and feasts, the game Kokpar - was usually played. One of the horse-riders with goat's carcass in his hand raced far ahead. Other participants in the game followed him. A champion-to-be had to have a quick horse to catch up with the jigit (young then) with the goat's carcass. He had not be a skillful and experienced horse-rider, so that other competitors could not throw him down from his horse in the heat of the struggle for the goat's carcass.

Kyz Kuu

In this race a young girl-rider starts first. All participating jigits then followed trying to catch her. When the luckiest of them caught up with the girl, he snatched a headscarf out of her teeth. If he failed to do this before the finish, then the girl turned her horse around and whipped the loser who must try to escape her lash.

This kind of leather footwear is worn by both men and women. Kebis in normally have soft soles and are sewn so that the seam does not fall on the sole. Women's and men's festive shoes were white in color and trimmed with furs of various animals.

Kimeshek

For a married Kazakh woman to uncover her hair was considered indecent. Often she covered it with a head-dress with a turban arranged as a cylinder on the head and a showl which had a special cut for her face.

The takhia is a men's everyday cap which covers the back and back of the head. Different forms are worn by the different people groups of Central Asia

Your brain is like a sleeping giant. The statement that, on average, we use only one per cent of our brain may be wrong. It now seems that we use even less than one percent, which means that an enormous amount of our brain can still be developed. The cerebral cortex is the most human part of the brain. It is from your cerebral cortex that you think, see, hear, imagine. Solving puzzles, crosswords, problems you can improve your brain. A good example of that is a man called Dominic O'Lerly. He can tell you the day of any date in any year. What day was April 21, 1876? "Wednesday", says Dominic. He can remember the teams and the scores of every football match in every World Cup. And he became world champion memory man when he remembered the order of thirty-five asks of playing cards. At school, he was a pupil who couldn't remember his lessons. But everything changed after he saw a programme on television, which showed people how to improve their memory. He says children can learn to improve their memory from the age of five.

Another example is a young man called Dario Donatelli. He recently graduated from a university in Pittsburgh, where he specialized in techniques for remembering numbers. He describes himself as quite normal, starting, "My memory is just like anyone else's. There are probably thousands of people whose memories could work faster than mine if they had the same interests as I have." He has broken the world record for memorizing the largest amount of numbers. He recently memorized a number of seventy - three digits. When inked how he did this, he replied, "I group the numbers into pairs, or threes or

fours, and I link them with something I familiar with, for example, my brother's

age a date of birth, a month of my year, etc."

However, could we do all the same? The important thing to remember is I that our brain actually improves with time and practice.

London Sightseeing Tour

London is the capital of the UK. There are a lot of interesting places to see in London. For example, Trafalgar Square. There is a statue of Admiral Nel­son who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafal­gar in 1805. He is a national English hero. There is no traffic in the square.

Buckingham Palace is the London home of the Queen. When the flag is on the top she is at home. Here you can see changing the guard. It happens every day at 11.30 a. m.

House of Parliament is the seat of the British Government. It's a very large building with beautiful towers. Big Ben is one of the most famous clocks in the world. It was named after Sir Benjamin Hall. The clock was made under his direction.

Westminster Abbey is a Royal Church. Here you can see many tombs of British Kings and Queens and other famous people, such as: Charles Dickens, Walter Scott, and Thomas Hardy.

Tower of London was a fortress, a royal palace, later a prison. Now it is a museum. Many tourists come to visit London and see all these places.

Harold is a bank manager in town. He's a health freak. He wants to live to be hundred, so health is very important to him. H e gets up at five o'clock in the morning and lifts dumb-bells for thirty minutes. For breakfast he eats a raw egg with garlic and chili pepper. It tastes disgusting. He leaves for work at 7 o'clock. He never goes by bus and he thinks that cars are extremely dangerous. He walks with a mask over his .nose and mouth everywhere. He also wears a uniform in his office which he designed to protect himself from dust and dirt.

At the office he washes his hands ten times a day and he wears gloves to up the telephone in case it "dirty". He takes his lunch to work with him. He eats fifteen sunflower seeds and union. He is sure that the lunch which the firm provides isn't good for him.

After work he rushes home to water the plants. He has hundreds of plants, because they provide oxygen. In the evening he sometimes listens to the radio, but never watches television because it might damage his eyesight.

On Mondays he goes to a fitness club and on Tuesdays he goes to a vegetarian cookery class. He rarely goes to the cinema or the theatre - there are far many germs. He goes to bed early. In summer he sleeps in a tent in the garden.. On the first day of every month he sees the doctor, just to make sure that he isn't ill. After all, he doesn't want to find himself in hospital.

In many countries heart disease kills a lot of women and even more men. There are five causes of heart disease:

• not enough exercise

• smoking

The most important cause, however, is stress. Three quarters of the office workers today say they suffer from stress at work. Psychologists and doctors have begun to study the problem more closely. According to a recent report on eating habits British teenagers think "healthy is boring". The most popular meal for many teenagers is a plate of chips, followed closely by pizza, sausages and burgers.

The research showed that peer pressure is the main reason why many pupils do not eat well. But girls do better than boys. Most girls are in favor of fruit and salads while 55 percent of them said their friends thought health eating was "cool".

Of the 1,200 children interviewed, two out of three children ate school meals - most of them every day.

UNUSUAL FOOD

I remember spending a holiday in Japan when I was fourteen. I went there with my father. My father was invited by his old friend.

I knew that the Japanese had different kinds of traditional dishes. I didn't really like the idea of trying unusual food.

One evening we went to the restaurant. When my first course arrived, it was a plate of sea urchins. I didn't remember ordering urchins, but I was too shy to say anything, so, I started to eat them. After a few moments, I began to feel unwell, so I stopped eating. My father's friend asked me if I liked them. I smiled and said that they were very delicious, so he gave me some of his. I went on eating the urchins, but I wasn't really enjoying the experience I all!

I gradually got used to trying new food.

From an older English word "hobyn" for a horse, came the modern word hobbyhorse meaning a dummy horse attacked to a performer who pretended to be riding a horse in a play or dance. Hobbyhorse has been shortened to hobby to describe any favourite leisure-time occupation.

Some newspapers write that there are more than one thousand hobbies to spend one's time. Well it's very difficult to describe all the hobbies known in the world. The main thing is that all of them must be useful and help your cultural development.

Hobbies can be divided into four groups: doing things, making things, collecting things and learning things. Doing things is perhaps the most popular. It includes a wide range of activities from gardening to sailing and from chess to foreign travel. There is also a choice between mental and physical activities, indoor and outdoor pursuits, etc.

Today it is fashionable to speak about teenage problems. A few years ago alcohol, fights, killings and other kinds of violence were more problems for adults than for young people.

Is it easy to be a teenager?

I try to be a good son, but no matter how hard I try my parents never seem in be satisfied. They think I should eat healthier food, I should wear nicer clothes and I should get better marks. And according to them my hair should be neater and my friends should be more polite when they come to visit You know it isn't easy to be a teenager.

British Teenagers (facts and figures)

Exercise 14. Read the text and get as much information about British teenagers as possible.
The average British teenager watches a lot of television (19,5 hours a week).

A lot of parents think teenagers are lazy. But in fact 57% get up before 7.30 a.m. The average British teenager sleeps for only 8 hours 45 minutes a night.

There isn't a queue outside the bathroom of the average British family. Not many teenagers (only 18%) have a bath or a shower in the morning. In fact they only have a bath or a shower four times a week.

A lot of British teenagers have a steady girlfriend or boyfriend (37%). But 20% never go out with a person of the opposite sex.

Young people in Britain don't get much pocket money (only £ 2.95 a week on average). But many of them have a part-time job. There aren't many cinemas left in Britain today because a lot of people prefer to watch films on television or on video. Only 10% of British teenagers go to the cinema once a

month or more.

Not many British teenagers smoke 76% of girls and 78% of boys are non-smokers.

There are a lot of churches and a lot of different religions in Britain, but not many young people (only 11%) go to church regularly.

A lot of girls brush their teeth twice a day or more (78% in fact). Not many boys brush their teeth often (only 57%). The result? Boys have a lot more fillings (one-third more) than girls.
