The Olympic Games.
The Olympic Games are an international sporting competition, held every four years with Summer and Winter games alternating, which thousands of athletes take part in.
The original Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from 776 B.C. to 393 A.D. These games were part of a festival held every fourth year in honour of God Zeus [zju:s]. It was a great athletic festival, including competitions in wrestling, running, rowing and others. The games were for men. Greek women were forbidden not only to take part but also to watch the Olympics. For the period of the Games all the wars stopped, so the Olympic Games became the symbol of peace and friendship.
In 1894 a Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic Movement. It controls the rules of the competitions, selects new Olympic sports, and decides upon the programme of the games, the number of the participants and the city-host for the Games.
Thanks to the IOC in 1896 the first modern Olympic Games took place. They were held in Athens, Greece.
The first Winter Olympic Games appeared only in 1924. They were held in France in the city of Chamonix [ʃəmə΄ni:]. Now they are being held regularly.
Russia joined the Olympic movement in 1952. The Games were held in Helsinki.
In 1980 Moscow hosted the Twenty-Second Olympic Games.
