Debate is a great way for you to practice your English language speaking skills. As for people, I want to remind you that they debate every day in many different situations and today we'd like to discuss how people enjoy living in the Far East.

My dear, I want you to be active and I'm sure you'll be able to express your own opinion and your speech should be as natural as possible. Don't forget to use such structures as "I am sure", "I think", 'Frankly speaking", "In my opinion", "To tell the truth" and so on. Now, let's start.

Introduction A

The Far East occupies almost 28 per cent of the country's territory, it is washed by by 2 oceans: the Arctic and the Pacific. The Sea of Japan is one of the deepest in Eastern Asia and it is one of the richest seas of our country.

Our region is known for its large fishing industry.

As for Primorye's nature, it is unique. The Far Eastern taiga is very large and it is useful herbs and plants.. The neighbouring countries are China, Japan and Korea. We have economical and cultural relations with other countries too.

So, the Far East is a great economical, educational and scientific centre. We are proud of it.

Today we'd like to prove how people enjoy living in Primorye.

These points are:

  1. The Sea of Japan.

  2. Cooperation with other countries.

  3. Unique nature.

Introduction B

But our points will be:

  1. Distance of Cultural and Educational Centers.

  2. Few opportunities for travelling.

  3. Practice of the English language.

The main idea of our discussion is that we live too far from the main educational and cultural centers of our country and we have no opportunity to travel much and practice our do it.

Point 1

I'm sure that Primorye's flora and fauna represent a combination of rich in cedar, inseng, some hares and foxes, tigers, deer, black and red squirrels and many other species of plants and animals, insects and birds.

There are a lot of different mushrooms and berries, including wild apples, grapes and strawberries. Far Eastern aralia and other plants are known for their medical properties. It is so good that we can breathe fresh air.

Tourists and travelers can find Primorye as a very rich region. They come here to admire

its nature and the wonders.

Rebuttal

On the one hand, I agree with you that it is very pleasant to go to taiga to breathe fresh air.

But on the other hand what can we find there? Medicine plants are disappearing. Nowadays it is very difficult to gather useful berries and plants.

As far as animals concerned I should say poor things. They are dying of hunger because there is almost nothing to eat for them.

As for me I see nothing beautiful there. Everything is spoiled. The point is that almost everything in taiga is either poisoned or slashed.

Point 1

I'd like to say that we live too far from the European part of Russia where there are a lot of different cultural and educational institutions. Those people who live there have a lot of opportunities to visit modern cinemas, theatres, galleries ,museums. Their cultural heritage is very great.

Rebuttal

But I can't agree with you, because so many theatres, museums and galleries in Primorye. For example, one of the biggest and the most popular is Gorky Academic Theatre, the Pacific Navy Theatre and the Puppet - Show Theatre. We have the Primorsky State Picture Gallery which hods a great number of paintings. Most tourists like to visit Arsenyev's museum. Besides, especially in summer the people of our region can visit moving exhibitions. And do you know our Russian scientist and explorer Phiodor Konyuhov. Who was born in Vrangel Bay?

Point 2

And what do you know about the Sea of Japan? It washes Primorye coast and it is one of the deepest in Eastern Asia. As for its biological resources it is the richest among the seas of our country. The sea of Japan is rich in salmon, sea organisms, crabs and others and it is an ideal place for submarine hunting.

Rebuttal

I don't really see that your sea is so beautiful! Look into the water near the shore and you will see how it is polluted! Some beaches are considered dangerous for swimming. There are many empty bottles, cans and other rubbish at the seaside. People don't think about the protection of the places where they live and rest. Many birds and fish die because of the polluted water. Don't be so light-minded and don't speak about the beauty of your sea! Your sea is the place of danger!

Point 2

I'm convinced that travelling is a very useful thing for us and, of course, modern life is impossible without travelling. As for me, I enjoy all kinds of travelling very much. But I'm sure that we have few opportunities for it. Sometimes we go to the seaside for a few days, but the weather is so changeable! Moscow and St. Peterburg are so far from us! Go there by plane are so dangerous and expensive today. As for the trains they go so slow .

Rebuttal

But I don't think so! In Primorye tourist season begins in May and in October it is over. For the last 5 years the number of tourists has increased greatly mostly because of tourists from China. Large islands such as Russky, Popov, Reynike attract thousands of tourists from Primorsky krai, Russian Far East and abroad. We can travel to different countries!

Point 3

Without a doubt every person knows that our neighbouring countries are China, Japan and Korea. I think these countries are very original and interesting, because of its unusual culture

and traditions. Our Primorye is a great economical, educational and scientific centre and we must have close cooperation with them.

Rebuttal

Frankly speaking, we have few opportunities for cooperation. As far as I know Japan is not very much rich in national resources. But it is the most highly industrialized country in Asia and it cooperates with other countries too. As for Korea it is rich in water resources. Its industry is influenced by foreign monopolies. How can we cooperate with Korea?

Point 3

And don't forget, please, that living far from the European part of Russia we have few opportunities to practice English. If we lived there we could communicate with people coming to our country from other European states where English is so popular. We learn English at our schools, but our school-leaves can't practice English and they forget it very quickly. Don't you think it would be better for us to learn oriental languages?

Rebuttal

I/m afraid I can't agree with you. English is very important and necessary language for us. We learn English at our schools and our school-leaves can practice it everywhere! Some people go to different countries as tourists in summer. It's necessary for us for the work on a computer. By the way, there are a lot of offices in Primorye where English is used. Every modern and cultural person should know English very well.

Conclusion

So we came to the conclusion that our region is very unique. Primorye is famous for its rich resources. Tourists can find in Primorye many places of interest. So, Primorye is a land of beauty. Primorye is a gem of the Far East. It has all possibilities to develop tourism.

Conclusion

Nevertheless, we live too far from the main educational and cultural centers of our country and we have few opportunities for travelling. But we are proud of our region and we want to live here, to study at our schools and get education at our institutes, colleges and universities. So, the world be a better place if all stopped polluting it.

So, boys and girls, I think you could prove that our Primorye is very unique, that it is not only a land of beauty, buy also a gem of the Far East and we are proud of it very much. We'll analyse your answers at our next English lesson. I want to put you excellent marks. Thank you for your work. You were brave enough. You may go.
