Proverbs and sayings are an integral attribute of the folklore and culture of these people, carry a reflection of life of that nation to which they belong, it is the way of thoughts and character of the people.

Actuality of the theme is the following: proverbs and sayings reflect culture, identity, main values. Therefore, the study of proverbs and sayings helps not only to improve our pronunciation and vocabulary, but also understand national characteristics of people.

The aim of the work: to identify the national characteristics of the English using proverbs and sayings.

To achieve this aim, put forward the following objectives:

1.To study the manual, documentary and journalistic literature on the subject
2.To classify proverbs and sayings in accordance with the features of British character
3.To conduct a survey of students if they know any proverbs and sayings

The relevance of this project : Proverbs and sayings, as an integral part of the language, reflect the culture, identity, main values of people.

Proverbs and sayings are an ancient genre of folk art. They originated in the distant time, and their roots date back centuries . Many of them appeared when there I wasn't writing. One can distinguish the following main sources of the origin of the English proverbs and sayings: the folk, borrowing from other languages, biblical origin, borrowing and using quotations of Shakespeare as proverbs and sayings. The analysis was carried out on the basis of 800 proverbs and sayings, presented by authors of R. Ridout and K.Whitting concerning to the theme "Personal life":

Then was made an etymological analysis of this material. As a result, which were obtained the following information:

Folk origin 64 or 82 % proverbs and sayings; borrowed from other languages 1 %; biblical 4 or 5%; borrowed from literary sources - 9, or 12 %.

Thus we can conclude that most of proverbs and sayings related to personal life have a folk origin folk origin and is a reflection of the experience of native speakers.

Next step was a distribution of material into subgroups. In the course of the research was allocated 11groups : "Home", "Curiosity", "Subordination", "Moderation", "Secrets", "Friends and money", "Marriage", "Family relationships", "The winning of sympathy", "Love".

It isn't easy to note according to this research, the most significant of the life of e British are family relationships and subordination. Friends, love and money relations have equal importance. At the final stage of the research, each subgroup of the proverbs and sayings was separately analyzed.

Studying English proverbs and sayings, we can conclude that the dialogue of cultures of their speakers will be successful only according to national circumstances , belonging to a reflection in the distinctive expressions and manifested in the character of images and the functioning of the artistic means of language. Proverbs and sayings always remain actual, despite the development of economy and technology, progress, etc.
