The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated in the north - west coast of Europe between the Atlantic ocean and the North Sea. The UK consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK lies on the British Isles. The two of them are the main islands. They are Great Britain and Ireland. They are separated from the continent by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover.

The UK is one of the smallest countries in the world. It is twice smaller than France or Spain. The area of the UK is some 244100 square kilometers. The population is over 57 million.

Great Britain is not rich in natural resources. Coal and oil are the main of them. There are many rivers in Great Britain. The Severn is the largest river, the Thames is the most important one. The geographical position of Great Britain gives it mild climate. The Gulf Stream influences English climate greatly.

The City is the heart of London. It is the financial centre of the UK with many banks, offices and firms. You can visit some interesting places in the City. One of them is the Tower of London. It was a fortress, a palace, a prison and the Kings Zoo. Now it is a museum.

The quality of countrys future life depends on quality of its education system. Schooling is voluntary under the age of five, but there is some free nursery school before that age. Primary education takes place in infant schools for pupils aged from 5 to 7 years old and junior schools (from 8 to 11 years).Every British child must stay at school from 5 till 16.They can stay longer and take final exams when they reach 17 or 18.

There are many types of state schools such as grammar, technical, modern, comprehensive schools. Children going to grammar school study academic subjects. Comprehensive schools usually combine all types of secondary education. They have physics, chemistry, biology, history, art. There are also many private schools.

At the age of16-18 pupils take school - leaving examinations to get General Certificate of Secondary Education. After leaving school young go to colleges. There are about 90 Universities in Britain, the old universities Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh Universities, London and Manchester Universities too. Most degree courses at Universities last 3 years, language courses 4 years. Medicine courses are longer (5-7 years).
