We can see beautifully illustrated old manuscripts which they keep in glass cases. In the reading room of the British Museum many famous men read and studied. Charles Dickens, a very popular English writer and author of "David Copperfield", "Oliver Twist" and other books, spent a lot of time in the British Museum library. At present the library has modern electronic equipment, so the reader does not have to wait long to receive the material he needs.

Here we can see the tombs of many British kings and queens and other famous people, and the beauty Henry VII Chapel. The Abbey was founded in the 11th century. Many of Great Britain's famous men are buried in Westminster Abbey.

Who Was It?

Не was an English novelist, a short-story writer and a poet. He was born in Bombay, India, in 1865 where his father worked at that time.

When he was six years old, his parents sent the boy to England where he attended school. At the age of seventeen he returned to India where he worked as a newspaper reporter for several years.

At twenty-one he published his first book of poems. A year later he wrote a boo of short stories about India. Between 1887 and 1899 he visited many countries and lived for some years in America where he married an American girl.

He is best known for his works for children, especially "The Jungle Book". He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1907.

Teacher: Who can tell us the poem by Joseph Rudyard Kipling?

Pupil 1:

Six serving men

I have six honest serving men.

They taught me all I knew.

Their names are What, and Why, and When,

And How, and Where, And Who.

I send them over land and sea,

I send them east and west,

But after they have worked for me

I give them all a rest.

But different folks have different views.

I know a person small.

She keeps ten million serving men

Who get no rest at all.

She send them on her own affairs

From the second she opens her eyes -

One million Hows, two million Wheres

And seven million Whys.

Pupil 2:

VII. Teacher: You have prepared your favorite poems by some British poets both in English and in Russian. Let's listen to them.

Pupil 1: W. Shakespeare.

Sonnet 116

Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments. Love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove,

0 no, it is an ever-fixed mark,

That looks on tempest, and is never shaken;

It is the star to every wandering bark,

Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.

Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks

Within his bending sickle's compass come;

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,

But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

If this be error, and upon me proved,

1 never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Pupil 2:

Pupil 3:

Then hate me when thou wilt; if ever now; Now, while the world is bent my deeds to cross, Join with the spite of fortune, make me bow, And do not drop in for and after-loss:

Ah, do not, when my heart hath scaped this sorrow,

Come in rearward of conquer'd woe:

Give not a windy night a rainy morrow,

To linger out a purposed overthrow.

If thou wilt leave, do not leave me last,

When other petty griefs have done their spite,

But in the onset come: so shall I taste

At first the very worst of fortune's might;

And other strains of woe, which now seems woe,

Compared with loss of thee will not seem so.

Pupil 4:

Pupil 5: George Byron.

My Soul Is Dark

My soul is dark - Oh! Quickly string

The harp I yet can brook to hear;

And let the gentle fingers fling

Its melting murmurs o' er mine year.

If in this heart a hope be dear,

That sound shall charm it forth again:

If in these eyes there lurk a tear,

Twill flow, and cease to burn my brain.

Pupil 5:
