Конкурс для старшеклассников

« Do You Know English-Speaking Countries? »

2013 год.

Данное мероприятие может быть проведено для учащихся старших классов общеобразовательной школы после прохождения тем страноведческого плана в рамках недели английского языка или как обобщающее мероприятие. Необязательно использовать все предложенные пункты данного конкурса. Вполне возможно убрать те, что учитель считает слишком лёгким или слишком трудным.

Предлагаемая разработка нацелена на развитие творческих способностей учащихся, позволяет каждому ученику проявить себя, формирует навыки группового взаимодействия, даёт возможность ощутить радость от коллективной совместной деятельности, расширяет кругозор учащихся и стимулирует их познавательные интересы.

The beginning of the competition

The teacher:

Good morning, everybody! We are very glad that you've decided to take part in our competition! Our contest is devoted to the English-speaking countries. I'm sure that you'll get to know a lot of useful information connected with the countries and today you've got a wonderful chance to show your achievements and knowledge in this field. Do be active today and you are sure to be a success.

Wish luck!

The 1st game:

You see the map of the world on the interactive board. Find and circle the countries where English is the official language.

The 2nd game:

The task: Please, mention English-speaking countries in turn. Every country you name brings you 1 point. You are welcome!

The 3d game:

Our next competition is called "Flags and capitals":

Have a look on the blackboard. You see 6 flags of different countries. The 1st team is to match cards with the names of the countries and the second one - the names of the capitals to the flags. Here you get two envelopes with the cards. Captains, take your envelopes, please!

N.B. (this task can be successfully done on the interactive board - in this case you can propose the flags of various countries to be labeled- 1 group can write the name of the country the flags belong to, and the second one can write the capitals.

(or you can suggest the names of the countries and the capitals written beforehand on the board, in this case the task will be no doubt much easier.

The 4th game:

Now every team gets a card with a long word. Will you try to make as many other words as possible from the letters in the word you are given.

(on the card the pupils see the word MEASUREMENT)

Possible variants of new words: are, am sure, men, net, mest, rest, measure and etc.)

The 5th Game: "Riddle countries"

Guess the names of these countries. Listen to the teacher and guess what country she is speaking about. Who is quicker?

  • This country is one of the largest in the world. It is washed by the Atlantic ocean in the East and by the pacific ocean in the west. What is it? (The USA)

  • This country has a very high living standard. People speak many languages there. The main symbol of the flag is a maple leaf. What is it?

  • It is a country which looks like an island. It is not very big, but beautiful. It is a country of fog and rain. There are a lot of places of interest. (Great Britain)

  • This country occupies a whole continent. It has strange animals and plants and unique nature. It's very far from our country. (Australia)

  • The country is wonderful and is famous for films where we can admire unforgettable nature, beautiful women in bright national costumes and enjoy sweet melodies and dances.

The 6th game:

Dear friends! Now you'll get some letters from the English alphabet. You must put the letters in the right order so that to get the name of the country.

(Two envelopes with the set of letters for two countries: England, Ireland)

The 7th game:

Now will you make the right choice: I'll give you cards with the tasks. Choose the right answer.

The 10th game: Musical contest:

The task is to sing the song together in different styles having listened to the record of the song. After that they are to sing the song with the melody.

( the tune can be in different styles: rock, folk, and etc.

The 11th game: "Who are they?"

1. Who was the founder of Disneyland?

2. Who was the king of rock'n'roll?

3. Who built the first car?

4. What was Mark Twain real name?

5. Who invented the telephone?

6. Who was the first American president?

7. Who is known as the king of jazz?

8. Who was the youngest American president? (John Kennedy)

9. Who is Tina Turner?

10. Who invented the soft drink Coca Cola? (John Pemberton)

11. After whom was America called? (Amerigo Vespucci)

12. Who chose the place for the American capital?

The 12th Game:

You see the most popular of sights of different English speaking countries on the screen. Name them! Who is the quickest?

The 13th Game: "Proverbs"

Give the Russian variants of the English proverbs:

  • Better late than never.

  • Better an egg today than a hen tomorrow.

  • East or west, home is best.

  • Everything is good in its season.

  • Out of sight, out of mind.

  • All roads lead to Rome.

  • You can't kill two birds with one stone.

  • All is well that ends well.

  • Appetite comes with eating

  • Live and learn.

  • Every dog has his day,

14. "Drama Station"

The task is to show a small performance on the base of a suggested scenario.

N.B. Teachers should prepare everything for the performance beforehand - dresses, fans, hats, a sweep, a mirror and etc.

The scene:

Stepmother: Cinderella! Cindirella! Where are you, bad girl?

1st stepsister: Cinderella!

2nd stepsister: Cinderella!

Cinderella: I am here, mother. What's the matter?

Stepmother: What are you doing, lazy girl?

Cinderella: I am …

Stepmother: (interrupts her) There is going to be a ball at the king's palace. We don't want to be late.

1st stepsister: Cinderella! Give ne my white dress!

2nd sister: Bring me my beautiful dress!

Stepmother; Give me my fan!

Stepsisters (looking in the mirror): Tell us, Cinderella, do you want to go to the ball?

Cinderella: Oh, don't laugh at me! Nobody will let me in!

1st stepsister: Of course, not! You have no beautiful dress!

2nd stepsister: You are too dirty to go there!

Stepmother: Well, Cinderella, you can go to the ball. (Cinderella claps her hands happily) But… first you must sweep the floor, wash the dishes and paint the fence.

(Cinderella begins to cry)

Stepmother: (to her daughters) Let's go, my dear girls! (to Cinderella)

And you stay at home and work!

The task is to make up the names of the greatest rivers of the world:

16. "Dancing Station" - Home task:

The team are to dance, the song - only in English

17. "British Culture Station"

The task is to choose the right variant:

1) Name the two components of the traditional Christmas meal:

c) roast goose and X-mas pudding

2) When is Christmas celebrated in Europe and in the USA?

In the end all the teams get together and show a little concert where they can demonstrate their talents. Nobody leaves the party without a prize.
