Teacher :And now let s repeat our magic words to find ourselves in Britain.

  • I ve never been to Britain.,I ve never seen Stonehenge

  • I ve never walked in London to cross the famous Tower Bridge

  • I ve never sailed across the see or been to Buckingham Palace

  • I ve only seen the girl in Book of Wonders, whose name was Alice

  • I ve never visited ancient castles or listened to their stories

  • And never collected legends to keep in mankind s memorials

3. ОСНОВНАЯ ЧАСТЬ . Развитие монологической речи, познавательной и исследовательской активности в ходе заполнения таблицы.

Teacher: How clever of you to be just in the South of England. Do you have your notebooks to write down all interesting facts about the sights of our interest? What famous sight is situated here?

P-1 Stonehehge 13 km from Solisbery (запись в таблице) We know from our textbook that it is one of the European biggest stone circles 10 or 12 metres high of prehistorical time 1850-1400 BC. The druids used Stonehenge for a calendar to know when the months & seasons started . On the 24 th of June the sun shines on the Hecl Stone. It s the longest day of the year. On that day we can see the Druids festival. It s a tradition . But according to another source we found out that many parts of Stonehenge were build before the time of Druids & Pyramids in Egypt & that it could be used as an observatory for a complex calculations & predictions of movements of sky bodies. So it s a kind of computer

P-2 Our branch is science & the second place connected with it is Oxford . ( демонстрация) University which appeared in 1164-1169. It consists of 35 different colleges & 5 "halls". The scholars had to find this place to study when Henry 2 made English clerks to go to the University of Paris. They taught theology, law, mathematics, natural philosophy & rhetoric. Oxford is a beautiful ancient city of 912 AD. That s why one square mile of it has more 900 buildings of architectural & historic interests.

P-3 our next branch is about legendary heroes. The legends of King Arthur began to appear in the 12 century & are based on a Celtic leader of the 6 th century (515) who defended his country against Saxon invasion. He was born in Tintagel & brought up by Merlin, & old Celtic magician. Arthur became King of Britain at the age of 15 when he managed to pull a sword from a rock. He received a magic Sward Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake. His Knights sat at the round table so, that they were equal. The Knights had feasts , sang ballads, & had to kill dragons & giants .they respected honour. The legend said King Arthur died in a Tintagel Monastery which is King Arthur s castle now.

P-4 One more legend is about Lady Godiva, a kind & beautiful woman & wife of Lord Leofric, the ruler of Coventry in 1040. The people of Coventry paid much money to their Lord 7 Lady Godiva often asked her husband not to take so much money , but he only laughted at her. He agreed only once, but his words she must ride naked on horse-back through the streets of the town. There are 2 versions of this legend: while doing it she was covered by her long hair & according to the second all people in Coventry shut doors, windows , nobody came out, except Tom, who became blind when he looked out.

P-5: Robin Hood is a legendary hero who lived in Sherwood Forest in Nottingham , situated in the heart of England,

surrounded by countryside. Stories about his adventures appeared in the 14 th centure, but it is believed that robib was born in 1160 at time of many robbers living in the woods. Robin Hood & his Merry Men robbed the rich to give to the poor. Robin was a good sportsman, a brave fighter. He dressed in green, lived in the forest with his wife Maid Marion & his men. Although the great Sherwood Forest has practically disappeared, there are parts of it with the Majot Oak - the headquartes of Robin Hood. A stature of Robin Hood now stands on Robin Hood s Green at the foot of Nottingham Castle, founded in 1068.

P-6: Our next branch is English monarchy & the first sight connected with it is Westminster Abbey in London, which was founded in 1050 as a monastery. Later it was rebuilt by Henry 3 . In the 18 th century the west Towers were added. It is a place of coronation of all English Kings. This tradition was established by William the Conqueror, who was crowned in 1066. the present Queen Elizabeth 2 was crowned in 1953. it is a place where English Kings are married & buried. Many famous Englishmen were buried here: Newton, Darvin, Watt.

P-7: One more sight connected with monarchy is the Tower of London - the oldest palace, fortress & prison in Europe. It was built built around 1090 by William the Conqueror on a site of a Roman fort. Massive walls & other towers were added later. It has been a citadel , palace ,prison, the home of the Mint, the treasury, the first royal observatory. Three queens of England have been beheaded within its halls. The Tower s guardians - Befeaters wear scarlet & gold uniforms dating back to Henry 7 s time. Ravens lived in the Tower according to the legend made noise while attacking of enemies at night, when the guardians were sleeping.

P-8: Windsor castle, founded in 1086, has been the residence of the Kings & Queen of England for over 800 years & it is still a residence of Elizabeth 2. In 1348 the Order of the Garter was established in the Castle when 26 Knights were elected members. They included Edward 3 & the Black Prince. Another residence of English monarchs is Buckingham palace, built in 1703. the first monarch who took residence was Queen Victoria. The Palace is not opened for the public/ the ceremony of the Changing the Guards at Buckingham Palace is a great tourists attraction. It takes place daily at 11.30. one group of guards in their traditional uniforms give keys to another group.

Teacher: I want to add about Buckingham palace. It is a family house where children play & grow & the place where presidents , Kings, politicians go to meet the queen. Being Queen is a really busy job: reading letters from the public, having daily meetings with her Private Secretary, ambassadors, judges, bishops, getting thousands of invitations , opening new hospitals, bridges factories. In her spare time Elizabeth 2 enjoys horse racing, fishing, walking, taking photos on travels. She visited 128 countries during her official visits in 50 years.
