DEAR FRIENDS!

Today we are having the so-called "Brain Ring". For this purpose we need two teams, each team consists of four players and a captain. The rest of the pupils will be spectators but they also will take part in the game as there re special tasks for them too. Each team has its own table with a lamp on it. During the game the teams will be given tasks. If the players know the answers, the captain should switch on the lamp. Only then a player can answer. Captains, please, introduce your teams.

  1. Quiz: "Guess who"

Now you'll have the quiz called "Guess who". I'll read you some information about a poet or a writer. Listen to it and guess who it is about. If you know the answer, switch on the lamp, please. The spectators can help their teams if none of players knows the answer. If you want to answer, raise your hand.

  1. Quiz "Name the characters"

Every writer creates his own characters. Sometimes they are more known than the author himself. You'll be given some information about the characters of well-known literary works. Your task is to tell their names. Don't forget to switch on your lamp first.

IY. Listening test ( задание для команд )

The next task for the teams is following. First you'll listen to the tape. Then you'll be given the sheets of paper with the tasks. There you are to write down the correct endings of the sentences using one of the given answers. To save the time, just write the letter of the correct answer after the number of the sentence. Now listen to the tape.

George Gordon Byron

George Gordon Byron, a famous English poet, was born in London in 1788. After the death of his father his mother left London and lived with her son in Scotland. When the boy was eleven, his grandfather's brother died and inherited the title of lord. At seventeen he entered Cambridge University and there his literary career began.

The poet became famous in England and in other countries when he published his poem "Child Harold's Pilgrimage." He wrote many other poetical works. Pushkin and Lermontov liked this poet. They translated some of his poems into Russian.

The poet travelled a lot. In Italy he joined the Carbounari, a revolutionary organization, that was struggling for the national independence.

In Greece he fell ill with typhus and died in April, 1824. The poet's name is well-known in our country and all over the world.

There's a good tradition in England. On New Year's Eve Londoners come to Trafalgar Square. When Big Ben chimes midnight, they sing this beautiful song. It symbolizes the parting with old year and the beginning of new life.
