Задание. Послушай текст и выполни задания:

Diana - the People's Princess

Diana Spencer was born on the first of July 1961 in England. She had two older sisters and a younger brother. In childhood she liked games, swimming, running and dancing. She wanted to become a dancer. Besides she loved children very much and at the age of sixteen she worked in schools for very young children.

Diana became princess, when Prince Charles, the Queen's son, asked her to be his wife and they got married. They seemed to be a happy couple at first. They had two sons. They travelled a lot they worked a lot, they visited many countries together. But Diana was not quite happy because they did different things and Charles didn't understand her.

Why was Diana the most famous, the most beautiful, the most photographed woman in the world?

Why did she win the hearts of millions and millions of people in many countries? Why did so many people come to London to remember her when she died? Why did the car accident which took her life, become such a total shock to crowds of people? Why did people feel the need to be in London at the funeral?

Why did the tears and love at the funeral move the world?

The answer is so simple. Matthew Wall, a student at St. Michael's College in Burlington said: "She was such a lovely lady. She did so much for those people less fortunate that herself".

She was a kind woman. Hundreds of people talked about Diana's kindnesses. She liked ordinary people, though she was rich and had many rich friends. Wherever she was, she was always ready to lend a hand. She was devoted to the sick and the poor. She visited hospitals for people with AIDS and for lepers and wasn't afraid to touch them, talk to them, listen to them.

She worked on children's charities, and had teamed up with Hillary Clinton in an effort to ban landmines. And it's not only money, that she wanted to give people. She wanted to give them a part of her soul, to make them happy because she was unhappy herself. She wanted to give them love, because she needed love herself.

Rock stars (Sting, Elton John), pop singer George Michael, film stars and producers (Tom Hanks, Steven Spilberg, Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise) and other famous people were among her friends. But she had more friends among ordinary people.

Diana was seen many times in floods of tears, because of the pressures of her loveless 15-year marriage. It is not a secret that Diana was hounded and humiliated to the point of mental breakdown and was able to pull through only because she knew she had the love of the people to buoy her in her darkest hours.

She was, indeed, the People's Princess.

Ответь на вопросы:

1. How many brothers and sisters did Diana have?
2. What did Diana like in childhood?
3. When did Diana become princess?
4. Why did Diana become world-famous?
5. Why did people love Diana?
6. Who was among her friends?
7. Why was she the People's Princess?

  1. The funny tradition.

  2. Important things.

  3. The Queen's speech.

  4. The British Government.

  5. Two lines.

  6. The famous Woolsack.

  7. The oldest part of the Palace of Westminster.

  1. The Palace of Westminster consists of three parts: the Royal Apartments where the colour is gold, the House of Lords where the seats are red and the House of Commons where the seats are green. The Chamber of the House of Lords is also called the Parliament Chamber, because every year when the Queen comes to open Parliament, all three parts of Parliament come together here for the Queen's Speech. In fact, it's not really the Queen's Speech, because she doesn't write it. The Government writes it for her. In the speech the Queen tells Parliament about the Government's plans for the next year.

  2. Oh, and that cushion is, actually, the famous Woolsack. And yes, there is wool inside it. It's a part of a very old tradition which started in the 14th century. It was put in Parliament to symbolise the importance of wool to the British economy at that time. The person who usually sits on the Woolsack is the Lord Chancellor. He presides over the House of Lords.

  3. The House of Commons is where MPs make decisions on new laws. There are two statues, one on each side of the arch. Both of these two men were Prime Ministers. One is David Lloyd George, and the other - Sir Winston Churchill. They represent the two main British political parties - the Labour Party and the Conservative Party. They have a tradition: if you're a Conservative, touch Churchill's shoe, and if you're Labour, touch Lloyd George's shoe.

  4. These are two long narrow corridors which are very important for the whole country because MPs come here to vote on bills for new laws. On the left there is the "aye", or yes, lobby. MPs who agree with a bill go there. On the right there is the "no" lobby for MPs who want to vote against the bill. Then the officials count the "ayes" and the "noes" to get the results. So in the British Parliament MPs don't vote by pushing a button; they vote with their feet.

  5. E. Now look at the floor. Can you see two red lines in front of the benches on each side of the chamber? That's part of a tradition too. The distance between these two lines is two swords' lengths. In the old days when MPs used to carry swords, it was dangerous if they got angry with each other. So these two lines are here to remind MPs that they shouldn't start a fight, and they can't go over this line when they are speaking in a debate.

  6. Westminster Hall is the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster, and it's more than a thousand years old. The son of William the Conqueror... Do you remember the Norman leader who won the Battle of Hastings? Well, it was his son who started the building of the hall. This building has seen a lot of famous events. In 1605 Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament, and in World War II bombs fell on it.

As for the latest news, I have just returned from a trip to Scotland…

Write a letter to Tom.

In your letter

James

My name is James, I'm fourteen, and I moved to this town with my family three months ago. My parents lived here when they were young, but my brother and I didn't know anyone here except a few aunts and uncles we'd met when we'd spent a couple of weeks with my grandparents, during school holidays. When I started school, one of my cousins, Sophie, who was in my class, was very friendly for the first week and I was happy to have a friend in a strange place. Then, for no reason, she stopped talking to me and I felt very hurt and lonely for several weeks.

In the end I made some more friends and since I got to know them, I've been fine. Now Sophie is having a disco party for her birthday next week and she has invited me. I don't want to go. My brother says he heard someone say she only asked me because her parents said she had to. But my mum and dad say it would be rude not to accept. Some of my new friends are invited, too. How can I show Sophie that she can't behave so badly towards me without causing a family quarrel?

  1. That he still hasn't forgiven her.

  2. That her friends think she behaved rudely.

  3. That his parents dislike her.

  4. That she has fewer friends than he has.

  1. Which of these is an answer to the text?

  1. Ask your friends to come with you and we can all have a good time together.

  2. Why not go to the party and ask Sophie why she stopped being friendly? At least everyone will know what's happening.

  3. Please phone my parents and explain the situation to them, so that they'll stop worrying.

  4. What about cooking a meal with Sophie and inviting all your relatives? That will be a good way to stop them quarrelling.

You are going to read an article about a green school. Five sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-F the one which fits each gap (16-20). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use.

  1. We got lots of recycling bins and started sorting our rubbish into glass, plastic, paper and food waste.

  2. Now the teachers travel into work together and parents pick up other people's children as well as their own.

  3. What makes the school so special?

  4. You should also be careful about the amount of water you use.

  5. In addition, they tell people not to throw their old clothes away.

  6. This means we don't use electricity as much as we used to.

Go green!

Bunningford Secondary School has just received an award for being the greenest school in the city. (16) …… We spoke to their biology teacher, Miss Taylor, who explained to us how they had gone about changing their school to make it into an environmentally friendly one.

"The first thing we did was look at the rubbish we were making as a school. We knew that we had to find better ways to dispose of it. (17) …… This means that most of our rubbish now goes directly for recycling.

"Secondly, we have taken responsibility for cleaning up the fields around the school. Once a month, the area is cleaned up by a group of volunteers from the school. Everything we find there is taken to the local recycling centre. We want to show with this action how each person really can make a difference.

"We've also had a solar-powered water heater installed on the school's roof. (18) …… That's important because the less energy we use, the less has to be made. The way a lot of electricity is made causes pollution.

"Another thing that causes pollution is cars. At our school, we have organized the parents and the teachers so that as few cars as possible are used. (19) …… There are a lot less exhaust fumes around our school now.

"The students have also made some lovely posters which explain all about environmentally friendly products and how we can change our ways to be more green. They want to make their parents aware of what they can do. The posters show how buying unpackaged goods reduces the amount of rubbish we produce. They suggest having one strong bag for your shopping rather than plastic bags from the supermarket every time you go there. (20) …… If they are given to a charity, somebody will use them."

Well, what can we say? Well done, Bunningford School!
