• Если предмет упоминается впервые, то употребляется a/an. There is a cat. The cat is black.

• The употребляется, когда из ситуации понятно, о каком предмете идет речь. Can you turn off the light, please? (the light in this room) I'd like to speak to the manager. (the manager of this shop) I must go to the bank to get some money. Carol is not very well, she has gone to the doctor. (her usual doctor) Сравните:Is there a bank hear here? My sister is a dentist. Не забывайте употреблять the: She works in the city centre. My brother is in the army.

• Когда мы говорим, что кто-то имеет «a long nose/ a nice face/ a strong heart». Jack has got a long nose. (not the long nose)

• В предложениях, подобных этим, мы не употребляем артикль с существительными во мн. ч. Dogs are animals. What awful shoes! Jack has got blue eyes.

• a/an употребляется c названием профессий. Sandra is a nurse. Would you like to be an English teacher?

• Мы употребляем the, если предмет единственный в своем роде: the earth, the sun, the moon. А также: the capital. the sky, the sea, the ground, the country, the environment.
