1. No doubt, friendship is a great thing. It makes you happy.

But sometimes even with friends we may feel lonely.

What associations do you have with the word "Loneliness"?

Let's complete the word web together.

2. What is loneliness in your opinion?

3. Look up and say what you think, using the ideas from the first box of the table.( blackboard).

4. In literature and films there are many examples of people who suffered isolation. Do you remember the story of Robinson Crusoe? He was in isolation on the island, far from his family and friends.

  • Read an abstract from the book to understand his feelings.

"Still, at times my heart was heavy. I looked around me and realized that I was a prisoner with no hope of escape. This thought used to come upon me, like a sudden storm, and make me cry like a child. But I read the Bible every day, and drew much comfort from it".

  • So, how did Robinson feel on the island?

  • It's so important when you meet someone who helps you to overcome loneliness. Why was it so important for Robinson Crusoe to meet Friday?

Read one more abstract from the book and answer these questions:

  • Did Robinson still feel lonely?

  • What relationship did he have with Friday?

"This was the pleasantest of all my years on the island. Friday began to talk very well, understanding almost everything I needed to say. After so many years without anyone to talk to, I enjoyed the pleasures of conversation. I began to love Friday more every day, and he gave his heart to me completely."

There are children who feel lonely and desolate. Do you know that they are called "Latchkey children" (от latchkey замок, который нельзя открыть изнутри). These are the children whose parents are often not at home and who therefore often return from school to an empty house.

What piece of advice would you give their parents? Use these scheme and word combinations from the table.

You know? Your children…

They have no one who…

You should…

It's necessary for them to…

So, you'd better…

Otherwise…

Grown-ups also sometimes feel lonely, don't they? Why do they feel lonely?

People try to avoid loneliness in different ways. Some of them prefer to have fun with their friends. Others go in for sports and so on.

What are the ways out? How can we overcome this feeling? Look up and say what traits of character people should have for that. Use the word combinations from the fourth box of the table to express your ideas.

Imagine that one of your friends feels lonely and unhappy because he/she has problems with his classmates. How would you cheer him/her up? Work in pairs. Затем учитель предлагает разыграть диалоги перед одноклассниками, а «зрители» должны оценить, удалось ли другу поддержать собеседника.
