MOTHER OF THE POOR

The people of Calcutta, India, often saw this tiny nun walking through the city's slums. As Mother Teresa knelt beside the dying woman, her usually smiling face showed anger.

"Why must this person lie in the street, ignored and uncared for?" she ask herself.

Mother Teresa took the woman to a nearby hospital and stayed there until the hospital agreed to care for her. As she left Mother Teresa prayed for the unknown woman who would now die in the hospital but her prayers did not relieve her anger.

"These people should not have to die in the street like animals!" she thought.

Every day Mother Teresa saw people dying in the streets of Calcutta. It was 1952 then, and thousands of people were homeless in India. These people had no one to care for them when they were sick and hungry. That's why she had come here.

In 1928 Mother Teresa became a nun and began to devote her life to Catholic Church. She joined a convent, a place where nuns live in India. Years later she was given permission to leave the convent so she could work with poor people of Calcutta. She opened a home for the dying. There she could love and care for these people. The "poorest of the poor" she called them.

After leaving the dying woman at the hospital Mother Teresa set out for the city hall.

"Why must people in the city die like dogs?" she asked the city officials. The small woman's sharp words surprised them. But the officials agreed with her that the dying needed care and shelter.

Soon, they decided on a place where Mother Teresa could take them a Hindu temple. Most people in India practice the Hindu religion. A temple is a special place of worship.

Mother Teresa was allowed to use a small building behind the temple. Although the rooms were filthy, Mother Teresa thanked God for her good fortune.

The Museum of British Transport

The museum in south London tells the story of public transport in Britain.

The first bus service in London was started in 1829. The bus was drawn by three horses and looked very much like a large carriage. The first double-decker bus was built in 1851, but the upper desk didn't have a roof until 1930. The passengers were given raincoats to put on if it started to rain.

The first trains, like the first buses, were drawn by horses, but they were not passenger-trains. They were used in mines and factories to carry material from place to place.

The first passenger railway in England - and in the world - was the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. In 1829, this company offered a prize of 500 pounds for the best steam train. The prize was won by George Stephenson, with his famous train the "Rocket". It could travel at twenty-nine miles per hour, which was very fast at that time.

Do you know the world record speed for a steam train? The record-breaking train, "Mallard", which is now in this museum, was built in 1938 , it travelled at 126 miles per hour.

MY FIRST DAY IN LONDON

I'll never forget the day when I first set foot in London. I came from a quiet little town in Ukraine and I had never lived in a big city before, so London was a new world for me and I tried to find out more about it for myself.

The general opinion abroad is that London has fog or rain, or both, every day of the year, but on the day that I arrived it was fine and warm, and the sky was cloudless. In Ukraine at that time the snow was still melting, and there was mud and sleet everywhere in the streets and parks. The next day was also beautiful; a slight wind was blowing and you could smell spring in the air. I went for a walk in Kensington Gardens. I found the way there quite easily. When I got my first sight of the gardens, the beauty of it took my breath away. The trees were just bursting into leaf, fresh and green, and there were beds of spring flowers, red and yellow and blue. People in light spring clothes were walking about, and, to my surprise, they were walking not only along the paths but also across the grass. I passed a pool, in which ducks were swimming, children were playing in the playgrounds.

It was time for me to go home, but which way was it? I hurriedly turned down one path that I thought would take me back - and found myself in Hyde Park. I ran to the left and to the right, asked some people for the way to the street where I had stayed, but I found to my horror that I could not understand what they said in reply. I walked through the park till I came to a big open place where a group of people was listening to a man standing on a chair. From time to time they were asking questions or making remarks and sometimes they were laughing at the speaker. Another group was singing loudly. This was a famous Hyde Park meeting.

Meanwhile, the sun went behind the cloud, I was terribly tired. At last I got to the park gate and came out into the street. Motorcars, bicycles, buses were running, people were hurrying along. In despair I crossed the street on to an island where I found a policeman who explained me the way to my hotel.

Watch out! Daniel's about!

Daniel Brown was just five years old when he climbed into the family car and let it roll away down the road. He was only three when he flooded the kitchen.

His mother, Angela Brown, is in despair. She is very busy looking after her new baby, a little girl called Laura, as well as Daniel. She told us, "Daniel is so full of curiosity". At that moment, we hear a huge crash and then silence. We go upstairs and find Daniel crawling out a wardrobe he has pulled over onto the floor, with a book in his hand. "It's for you Mum", he says and looks up at his mum and smiles.

Seven-year-old Daniel has an angelic face. He has golden hair, big brown eyes, and a wide friendly grin. I have to admit that Daniel doesn't look like a naughty boy.

Angela told me all about it. "Once I found him as he was about to put jasper in the washing machine". Jasper, she explained, is the Browns' dog. "When I asked him why, he said that he thought Jasper was dirty! It's amazing how one little boy can cause so much trouble. Another time he cut off all the hair of the little girl next door. She was going to be a bridesmaid at her sister's wedding and the neighbours haven't spoken to us since."

Angela told me about Daniel's most expensive crime. "I was about to do washing up when the baby started crying. Daniel decided to help and filled the kitchen sink with water. When I came in the water was already flooding the kitchen and was about to flood the hall. The carpet was ruined and had to be replaced. I hope things will get better as he gets older."

Amazingly, Daniel is quite well behaved in school. This may be because he is rarely bored. Meanwhile he continues to be the naughtiest little boy in England. Will his baby sister Laura grow up to be the naughtiest little girl?

Surviving an interview

NS Sarah, this is Patrick.

PC Hi!

SB Hi!

SF Patrick's applied for a travel scholarship and he's going for his interview next week. We were wondering if you had any tips.

SB OK! Have you decided what you are going to wear, Patrick?

PC Er… yes, I'm planning to wear a jacket and a tie that belongs to my elder brother. It looks really good on me.

SB That sounds fine. You should look smart and feel comfortable. What time is the interview?

PC It starts at eleven.

SB Well the first thing to do is to make sure that you are there on time. There is a nothing worse than arriving late. You just end up getting worked up and flustered.

PC Well, Dad's driving me … So I'll make sure he leaves early.

SB Good. Now, do you know what to expect when you get there?

PC No, not really.

SB Well, the first thing you should do is to tell reception that you've arrived so that they know you are there. There'll probably be a waiting room - there is in most interview situations. Wait patiently and quietly. You can create an impression outside as well as inside the interview room! There may be other candidates there. If you don't know them, just smile pleasantly, but don't feel that you have to talk and don't let the other interviewees put you off at all. It is your performance that counts. When they are ready for you, someone will come and get you. When you walk in, don't rush to sit down. Always wait until you are invited and, above all, make sure that you walk in smiling. First impressions are very important.

PC Should I shake hands with the interviewer?

SB See what they do. If they offer to shake your hand, do it firmly and sincerely, that will set them at ease with you.

PC Yeah.

SB Now, how are you sitting at the moment?

PC What do you mean?

SB Well, at present your posture is relaxed and normal. You are not slouched back in your seat and that's good. Remember, that leaning forward shows interest, so do this if you sense that you have been asked an important question. It is also very important that you make eye contact with the interviewers. If you spend all your time staring at the ceiling and floor, you will make them fell uncomfortable, so make sure you look at them - even if you are feeling very nervous. One more thing, have you done your homework?

PC Yes, I have thought about the questions they are likely to ask and how I'll answer them.

SB And have you thought of the questions you want to ask them?

PC No! Should I?

SB Yes, towards the end the interviewer may ask you if you have any questions. Never say no. This is your chance to show your interest in what you are applying for.

Left-handers

Teen boy I can remember being five and starting school, with the teacher standing over me, grabbing the pencil out of my left hand.

Teen girl When I was at school I wasn't allowed to use my left hand for two years.

Interviewer These stories are typical of what many left-handed people went through when they started school. Left-handers learn to live with the problems but at a cost because they have to relearn lots of simple tasks. So what are some of the problems left-handers face and what should be done for young left-handers? I spoke to Marlene Evans, Director of "Left"- an association for left-handed people.

Marlene The first real problem is using scissors. If you use right-handed scissors in the left hand it is very difficult to cut because there is no cutting action from the blades. It is also very difficult to see the exact cutting line because there is also a blade in the way. I think left-handed children should always be given special left-handed scissors.

Interviewer Many left-handers have problems writing.

Marlene This is because they aren't taught properly. I think left-handers should be taught to write from the start. The problem is a left-hander would naturally write from right to left across the page. We need to show them how to sit and place the paper in a way that makes it easier to write from left to right. A lot of classroom equipment can also be improved for left-handers. For example left-handers have problems with right-handed rulers because they can't draw lines in the direction they want. They should be given left-handed rulers with the scale from right to left. This makes it much easier to draw lines of the correct length in the direction left-handers prefer. There are other pieces of equipment we can get them including special pencil sharpeners but the most important thing is that children should be allowed to use the hand they want to use.

Interviewer There are important social customs where we have to use the right hand. Shaking hands saluting are two of them. Even so, it is thought that between ten and twenty percent of the population is left-handed. Left-handers are often more intelligent and have an advantage in many sports including tennis and basketball. In some countries, left-handers have been fighting for their rights. For example, in America a left-handed policeman fought for the right to wear his gun on the left side. One group has even issued a Bill of Right for left-handers called a "Bill of Lefts" which argues that left-handers should be allowed to use their left-hand when they shake hand or salute.

All new employees are required to complete a training course on the safety procedures in effect at our various sites. Successful completion of this course is a requirement for obtaining permanent employment status at this company. The training course must be completed by each employee before the end of his/her six-month probationary period. This course is individualized and self-contained; consequently, you may take it at any time. It is available in the Learning Resource Center, located next to the cafeteria.
