A Wonderful Discovery.

Sarah had a son of ten, who was called Jack. He did not like studying, but loved watching television. Sarah used to drive at school at half past four in the afternoon, bring Jack back home and give him some tea, but as soon as he got home, he always rushed to the television set and turned it on. "Haven't you got any homework, Jack?" his mother always asked him as she began to make tea.

"Eh? Oh, yes, I have got a little," he used to answer. "I'll do it later when there's nothing interesting on the television."

At first Sarah had allowed Jack to watch television instead of starting his homework first, but soon she discovered that he never had a little homework - it was always a great deal- and that there was never a time when there was nothing interesting on television, so that after putting off doing his homework for a couple of hours, Jack was too tired to do his homework properly, if at all.

Sarah then decided to make him do it first. This was always a battle, and often when Jack obeyed his mother, he did his work quickly and carelessly as he wanted to finish it quickly and get back to his beloved television.

The result was the same as when he left his homework until last; bad work, which he was punished for the next day at school by getting low marks, either because his homework was full of mistakes, or because he did not know the work he was supposed to have prepared the night before.

One evening Jack's science homework was about famous inventors like Thomas Edison, who made important discoveries and inventions in the field of electricity. When he had homework that consisted of learning facts, his mother began to test him when he finished, to try to make sure that he had really done the work properly and not left anything out, and this was what she did this time. She did not let him stop until she was sure that he knew what was in his book.

But this time, it was less of a battle than usual to make Jack sit down and go over what he had learnt carefully, because it had strong connection with television.

In class the next day, the teacher said to Jack," What are some of the things that Thomas Edison did for science?"

"Well," Jack answered happily, "first of all, if it were not for Edison, we'd all be watching television by candlelight."

А. Write down whether the following statements are true or false.

  1. Jack had a lot of homework.

  2. He did not do his homework well because he was not a clever boy.

  3. Jack's mother made him do his homework.

  4. Jack enjoyed doing his homework about Thomas Edison.

  1. Answer the following questions.

    1. Was there sometimes nothing interesting on the television for Jack?

    2. Were Jack's results better when his mother made him do his homework?

    3. What did Jack's mother do to stop him being punished at school?

    4. Why was Jack's answer funny?

Reading.

Part I

1.1. Read the text and put the paragraph headings in the correct place (A, B or C):

A Be someone else!

B No limits

C Making connections

Three ways to become more creative.

Most people believe they don't have much imagination. They are wrong. Everyone has imagination, but most of us, once we become adults, forget how to access it. Creativity isn't always connected with great works of art or ideas. People at work and in their free time routinely think of creative ways to solve problems. Maybe you have a goal to achieve, a tricky question to answer or you just want to expand your mind! Here are three techniques to help you.

1 ________

This technique involves taking unrelated ideas and trying to find links between them. First, think about the problem you have to solve or the job you need to do. Then find an image, word, idea or object, for example, a candle. Write down all the ideas/words associated with candles: light, fire, matches, wax, night, silence, etc. Think of as many as you can. The next stage is to relate the ideas to the job you have to do. So imagine you want to buy a friend an original present; you could buy him tickets to a match or take him out for the night.

2________

IГрамматический тест для учащихся 6-7 классовГрамматический тест для учащихся 6-7 классовmagine that normal limitations don't exist. You have as much time, space, money, etc. as you want. Think about your goal and the new possibilities. If, for example, your goal is to learn to ski, you can now practise skiing every day of your life (because you have the time and the money). Now adapt this to reality. Maybe you can practise skiing every day in December, or every Monday in January.

3________

Look at the situation from a different point of view. Good negotiators use this technique in business, and so do writers. Fiction writers often imagine they are the characters in their books. They ask questions: What does this character want? Why can't she get it? What changes must she make to get what she wants? What does she dream about? If your goal involves other people, put yourself "in their shoes', The best fishermen think like fish!

1.2. Answer the question. Choose the answer (a, b or c) which fits best according to the text.

4. Which statement is true?

A Most people aren't imaginative.

B Only children are imaginative.

C We are all imaginative.

5. How does the first technique work?

A You link your problem with an image or word.

B You link your problem with the word "match."

C You have to think of a present for a friend.

6. In the second technique, what must you imagine?

A That you are rich.

B That you aren't limited in any way.

C That you can ski.

7. What do you do in the third technique?

A Imagine you are a negotiator.

B Imagine you are a different person.

C Imagine you are a fiction writer.

8. In the third technique, what type of questions should you ask?

A Questions about other people's shoes.

B Questions about business techniques.

C Questions about motivation and making changes.

Part 2.

Read about some changes in New York City.

The Forbidden Apple.

New York used to be the city that never sleeps. These days it's the city that never smokes, drinks or does anything naughty (at least, not in public). The Big Apple is quickly turning into the Forbidden Apple.

If you wanted a glass of wine with your picnic in Central Park, could you have one? No chance. Drinking alcohol in public isn't allowed. If you decided to feed the birds with the last crumbs of your sandwich, you could be arrested. It's illegal. If you went to a bar for a drink and a cigarette, that would be OK, wouldn't it? Er ... no. You can't smoke in public in New York City.

What's going on? Why is the city that used to be so open-minded becoming like this? The mayor of New York is behind it all. He has brought in a whole lot of new laws to stop citizens from doing what they want, when they want.

The press are scandalised. Even the New York police have joined the argument. They recently spent $100,000 on a 'Don't blame the cop campaign. One New York police officer said, 'We raise money for the city by giving people fines for breaking some very stupid laws. It's all about money'

The result is a lot of fines for minor offences. Yoav Kashida, an Israeli tourist, fell asleep on the subway. When he woke up, two police officers fined him because he had fallen asleep on two seats (you mustn't use two seats in the subway). Elle and Serge Schroitman were fined for blocking a driveway with their car. It was their own driveway.

The angry editor of Vanity Fair magazine, Graydon Garter, says, 'Under New York City law it is acceptable to keep a gun in your place of work, but not an 'empty ashtray'. He should know. The police came to his office and took away his ashtray.

But not all of New York's inhabitants are complaining. Marcia Dugarry, 72, said, 'The city has changed for the better. If more cities had these laws, America would be a better place to live.' Nixon Patotkis, 38, a barman, said, 'I like the new laws. If people smoked in here, we'd go home smelling of cigarettes.

Recent figures show that New York now has fewer crimes per 100,000 people than 193 other US cities. And it's true - it's safer, cleaner and mere healthy than before. But let's be honest - who goes to New York for its clean, streets?

Mark the statements true or false:

9. Some activities have recently become illegal in New York.

10. It is now illegal to smoke or drink alcohol anywhere in New York.

11. Eating sandwiches in the park is illegal.

12. The police like the new laws.

13. It is illegal to sleep on the subway.

14. Elle and Serge Schroitman were fined because they parked in he wrong place.

15. The editor of Vanity Fair magazine thinks some of the new laws are stupid.

16. Some people like the new laws.

17. New York is now clean and safe compared to in the past.

For questions 11-20, read the text below and think of the word which best fits each space. Use only one word in each space. There is an example at the beginning (0).

The film Ocean's eleven (and 0 by_______ that, I mean Soderbergh's 2001 hit) had an indefinable quality 11………..it. But the sequel, unimaginatively titled Ocean's Twelve, feels far too much 12……….the first one. In the follow-up film, three years after the first daring robbery, Danny Ocean is found living 13………happy retirement. His wife is waiting at home to celebrate their wedding anniversary, when, 14……….should arrive, but Terry Benedict. (He's the man from whom Ocean's Eleven, as the gang has been called, stole $160 mil). Even 15………..Benedict has received insurance money for the theft, he now wants the gang to pay it back but 16……….added interest. All of them have moved on, but he hunts them down and 17………..a deal with them - give him nearly $200mil. in two weeks, or die. Faced with 18……….choice, the gang leave for Amsterdam because it's a place where they won't be recognized and, with the help of a contact there, they can raise the money. Sadly, this is where Ocean's Twelve falls 19………and becomes unnecessarily complicated. Perhaps it tries too hard, maybe it's not trying hard 15…………….., or possibly it's a little of both!

Reading.

Part 1.

You are going to read about a woman returning to the house she used to live in.

Return to Gunnesbury.

Mary got off the train at Gunnersbury station and walked up towards the mad. The suburban London summer hung over the scene like an old familiar smell and memories made her tremble with recognition at every step. It was many years since she had been here.

She walked along, and although she could not have pictured the road in her mind before, now she remembered each house; a gatepost, the coloured glass in a front door, the lamp-post casting a lonely light on the step. These houses, 'the older larger houses' as she thought of them then, were surprisingly unchanged. In the heat of the afternoon the remembered road had the slightly threatening familiarity of a place in a dream when one thinks: I have been here, yet where is it and what is going to happen? The colours too seemed like dream colours, not reflecting light, as if they were bright colours seen in darkness. And the streets were empty as in a dream.

Mary turned a corner and for a moment did not recognize the scene at all. Houses had disappeared. Tall blocks of flats and huge garages had taken their place. Now there were a few cars, but still nobody walking on the pavements. Mary frowned and thought with a sudden surprised pain, perhaps our house too will have simply disappeared. But by now she had reached the end of the little road and could see, halfway down upon the left, the small semi-detached house where she had lived with Alistair during the four years of their marriage.

Mary steadied herself, putting her hand on to the low wall at the corner of the road, aware of her hand's sudden memory of the wall and its sharp stones. With the touch of her hand upon the wall there came the unexpected image of a piano, their old upright piano long since sold, which Mary must have thought of once as she paused with her shopping-bag at the corner of the road. Alistair had a beautiful voice and they had often sung together, he playing the piano, she standing with her hands on his shoulders. This was a purely happy memory.

Mary now began to walk slowly down the far side of the road. She could already see that the hedge which she and Alistair had planted had been taken away and a low brick wall had been put there instead. The small front garden, which she and Alistair had planted with roses, was entirely paved now except for two beds out of which large rosemary bushes leaned to sweep the paving stones with their blue-green branches.

Now Mary, almost opposite the house, could see with a shock the light of a farther window within the darkness of the front room. They must have knocked down the wall between the two downstairs rooms. She and Alistair had often discussed doing so. She stopped and looked across. The house seemed deserted.

Part 2.

2.1. Read the article. Match headings a) -e) to paragraphs 8-12.

a) A weekend invitation.

b) A spooky experience.

c) A nation of believers.

d) Still a sceptic.

e) Our first evening.

Look behind you!

8________A recent survey revealed that 68% of people in the UK believe in ghosts, and 1 in 10 people claim that they've actually seen a ghost. Being naturally sceptical, I always take these kinds of survey with a pinch of salt, but it does seem that nowadays everyone wants to meet a real-life ghost.

9________So when my sister-in-law Pat suggested going on a ghost-hunting weekend, I didn't need to be asked twice, Pat was hoping to see her first ghost, while I just wanted a few days off to recharge my batteries. We were soon heading off to Brockfield Castle in Somerset,' one of Britain's most haunted houses, to spend the weekend looking for ghosts - I thought it was going to be a piece of cake.

10_______Brockfield Castle, a spooky old building in the middle of nowhere, certainly was a far cry from my modern London flat. There were eight other guests and we all had dinner together on the first evening to break the ice. Our fellow ghost-hunters seemed normal enough - apart from one strange old lady who kept telling us to keep an eye out for werewolves (she must have booked the wrong weekend break). After dinner Ashley, our guide, gave us a talk on the history of the castle, which is apparently haunted by two brothers who died in a fire over 200 years ago. Then we were taken on a tour of the castle's 37 rooms. Sadly the brothers were nowhere to be seen - perhaps they'd gone away for the weekend too.

11________That night I slept like a log, but on the second evening things started to get weird. Pat and I were walking in the Hardens after dinner when out of the blue she shouted, 'Look, there's a ghost!" I thought she was pulling my leg, but she pointed to one of the windows. An old man was standing there, arms outstretched. We watched him for about a minute and then he suddenly vanished. When we told Ashley what we'd seen, he said we'd been looking up at the room where the Brothers had died.

12_______Of course, Pat's first ghostly encounter really made her day, and I have to admit that the experience gave me food for thought. However, as someone once said, for the believer, no proof is required - but for the sceptic, no proof is sufficient.

2.2. Mark the statements true or false
