You are going to listen to the part of the text about skateboarding. Be ready to answer the questions:

1. When and where were the first skateboards created?

2. What did first skateboards look like?

3. What was skateboarding originally called?

Now read the script and open the brackets according to what you have heard:

Skateboards (were/were being/have been/-) developed in Southern California in the early nineteen fifties. Children, mostly boys, built boards themselves. They attached four clay or metal wheels to a long narrow piece of (mood, hood, good, wood). They would have looked much more like surfboards (then/than) modern skateboards. Skateboarding was called "sidewalk surfing".

6. Физкультминутка.

You are tired, aren't you? Will you stand up, please? Let's remember our poem.

(Выполняют движения, рассказывая данное стихотворение)

Two little feet go tap, tap, tap.
Two little hands go clap, clap, clap.
Two little feet go jump, jump, jump.
Two little hands go thump, thump, thump.

7. Развитие навыков изучающего чтения.

Read what these boys and girls think about sport. Do you agree or disagree?

I am Alison and I am not very fond of sports. I am a bit plump and it is difficult for me to run and jump. I do not like to compete, but I like to watch sports on TV. Best of all I like watching figure skating. I admire beautiful women and strong men, who can dance on the ice so well. I sometimes go skating myself.

I am Peter. Sport plays a great role in my life. I love every kind of sports - football, volleyball and basketball. I also play chess and once played in our school team against Kasparov. We all lost of course, but it was an unforgettable experience. I also love to play football. I go to our local football club every spare minute and my dream is to become a football player. I also watch football on TV a lot. I never miss a single match.

I am Ann. I am not crazy about sports, but I think it is very important to keep in good form and stay healthy. I want to become a model, so I take great care about my body. I go jogging every day and I attend fitness room three times a week. When I have the time I also attend classes of aerobics, but they are quite expensive, so I can not go as often as I want to. It is difficult to do all these things.

My name is Alex. I do not understand people who spend all their lives going crazy over sports and their body or watching others doing the same on TV. It is much more fun to train brains. In the modern world people do not need any muscles, difficult things can be done by machines. I knew one boy, who was exercising every day and was still not happy with his looks. So he started taking special hormones to make his muscles grow. He got huge muscles, but he ended up in a hospital, because hormones did a lot of harm to his health. I would never do anything like that. I am much happier sitting on my sofa with a book or in front of the computer.

I am Ted. On one hand sport is my life. I play volleyball, that is the only thing I like to do and can do very well. I like this sport, because you have to be strong, fast and clever to play it. On the other hand a professional sportsman gets old too quickly. You can not play when you are old. In general sport costs professional sportsman too much.

8. Рефлексия учебной деятельности

Is sport popular all over the world? Why do you think so? You will work in pairs and discuss why people do sport. Exercise 9, page 102 from your textbooks will help you. Use the linking words from the blackboard and make up a story.

Sport is popular all over the world.
First of all …

I think that

Приложение1

Skateboarding was, at first, tied to the culture of surfing. As skateboarding spread across the United States to places unfamiliar with surfing or surfing culture, it developed an image of its own.

The first skateboards started with wooden boxes, or boards, with roller skate wheels attached to the bottom. Crate scooters preceded skateboards, having a wooden crate attached to the nose (front of the board), which formed rudimentary handlebars. The boxes turned into planks, similar to the skateboard decks of today.

In the early 1970s skateparks hadn't been invented yet, so skateboarders would flock and skateboard in such urban places like The Escondido reservoir in San Diego, California. Skateboarding was popularized by the 1986.

The image of the skateboarder as a rebellious, non-conforming youth has faded in recent years. Certain cities still oppose the building of skateparks in their neighborhoods, for fear of increased crime and drugs in the area. The rift between the old image of skateboarding and a newer one is quite visible. Furthermore, as more professional skaters use hip hop, reggae, or hard rock music accompaniment in their videos, many urban youths, hip-hop fans, reggae fans, and hard rock fans are also drawn to skateboarding, further diluting the sport's punk image.

The increasing availability of technology is apparent within the skateboarding community. Many skateboarders record and edit videos of themselves and friends skateboarding. However, part of this culture is to not merely replicate but to innovate; emphasis is placed on finding new places and landing new tricks.

Skateboarding video games have also become very popular in skateboarding culture.

By 2001 skateboarding had gained in such popularity, that more participants under the age of 18 rode skateboards (10.6 million) than played baseball (8.2 million), although traditional organized team sports still dominated youth programs overall.
