Public holidays in the United Kingdom are observed in some or all of the countries of the United Kingdom. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, public holidays are called bank holidays, although legally there is a difference. Bank holidays are holidays when banks and many other businesses are closed for the day. Public holidays are holidays when religious festivals such as Christmas and Easter are observed.

Bank holidays may be declared in two ways:

• by statute (holidays listed in the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971)

• by Royal proclamation (this has been used to move a bank holiday in a given year,and to create an extra bank holiday for special occasions).

When a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the holiday is normally postponed to the next following working weekday. This is normally the next following Monday, but if that day is itself already a public holiday, then it may be the following Tuesday.

Most commonly this happens when Christmas Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, in which case the following Monday will be a public holiday for Christmas Day, and the Tuesday will be a holiday for Boxing Day. Should Christmas Day fall on a Friday, then it will be observed on the Friday, but Boxing Day (falling on the Saturday) will be observed on the following Monday.

Unlike the USA, where public holidays falling on a Saturday are sometimes observed on the preceding Friday, British public holidays are always moved forwards, not backwards.

January 1^st celebrates the beginning of a new year. Financial and commercial institutions are closed, and public transport operates on a reduced timetable. Scotland has an additional public holiday following New Year's Day (January 2^nd) to celebrate the traditional Scottish Hogmanay festival.

Saint Patrick's Day falls on March 17^th. It celebrates Ireland's patron saint. Cities in Ireland hold St Patrick's Day festivals and parades, and it is traditional to wear green. The emblematic shamrock has strong associations with St Patrick who used it to explain the Holy Trinity when teaching Christianity.
