Teacher: Our today's class is quite unusual: we are going to visit a construction site in order to see what modern construction techniques and methods are used nowadays. And I expect that after seeing the process of building construction with your own eyes you'll keep in mind all information for quite a long time and you'll be able to discuss professional topics in your future career.

Teacher: "Before starting off for an excursion to a Сonstruction Site, I want you to listen to a report of one of our senior students who has recently visited an International Exhibition of Modern Building Materials and Construction Technologies in Norway. After the report is over you are welcome to ask you questions. So, Liliya Aminova is going to tell us about the framing construction technology of building with SIPS".

St1: What do SIPS stand for?

Guest student: SIPs are structurally insulates panels made of two oriented-strand boards which are interlaid with hard expanded polystyrene adhered at high pressure.

St2: Are there any advantages of building with SIPs?

Guest student: Sure. Firstly, as it has been mentioned in this video the building construction time is greatly reduced? To construct the floor, exterior wall and roof of an average home from about 2 to 7 days are required as most of the parts are precast parts or modules.

St3: Are SIPs brand new technology for Russian engineers?

Guest student: I don't think so. The same principle was used in airplane construction where different modules were used in their design.

4.3 Ролевая игра "An Excursion to a Сonstruction Site"

Для разработки данной ролевой игры студенты могут использовать материал ранее изученных текстов по специальности "Construction Works", "Some Building Professions" [4: 25-27, 35]; "Occupations in the Construction Industry", "Construction Managers" [1: 62-67], а также информацию из видеоролика, изученного в начале занятия.

Teacher: "Your next task is to role-play the situation of visiting a construction site. Try to be ready with it in 30 minutes. Use the following dialogue which should be completed with appropriate statements according to the parts of the play. Try to remember all the data that has been studied in previous classes concerning building professions. You may use your textbooks if necessary".

Building with SIPs»

At more than 8000 new houses construction sites American home builders are discovering new ways to build houses that are more energy efficient, more comfortable and that are as much as twice stronger than their competitors. 21st century building system uses SIPs that streamline the process of framing and insulation by big sterol envelope. These engineered wood panels are measured and cut in factories and arrive at the construction site ready to be assembled just like a jigsaw puzzle.

The panels fit together tightly forming the exterior shell of the home. What is the advantage of SIPs is that they are provided with special holes and chases for electrical systems and plumbing and the place for switches. The chases usually go throughout the board. And standard oriented strand boards (OSB) are insulated both from the exterior and interior.

Electricians, plumbers, and other traders who used to stick to build houses here have to adjust the approach using different techniques. And many find the process simple and easy once they become familiar with it. Jim Mc Royce, the member of the structural insulated panels association, has been constructing homes with SIPs for 15 years.

He says that buildings with SIPs create superior homes for their customers who spread the world and set a greater number of preferences every year. But it's not just the home owners who benefit from buildings with SIPs. One of the things that I think is important for builders is the site time, the amount of time necessary on the site to erect the house, and true site time can be greatly reduced in structures with structurally insulated panels. With precast parts at the garage site when all electrical systems are cut, most openings are cut, lengths are cut, the pieces are measured and premeasured there is very little work that has to be done. Panels are attached to the primary part of the foundation, each panel set on top of the SIP plate and has to be nailed or screwed, blocked to it by the neighboring panels on the place. Even if they hadn't worked with SIPs before, because they are wood products even an inexperienced framing group can adopt the skill quickly to construct the floor, exterior wall and roof of an average home in about 2 to 7 days depending on the size and the design of a home. Instead of building one piece at a time we build new structures in four to four modules just standing up four to four at a time. The tools needed at the construction site can be placed in two boxes.

The exterior envelope of the panels is also insulated by expanded polystyrene, the thickness of coating being from 4 to7 inches. The standard form panels provide permanent insulation throughout the exterior envelope of the home. Because the roof panels are the same oriented strand boards as the wall panels there is no need to add insulation. In fact you don't even have to provide insulation or add it to your design. The entire slope of the house is easily operated. Many people incorporate cathedral type spaces in their design and one doesn't need any extra effort to create these cathedral spaces. While buildings with SIPs afford design flexibility, they also create a strong exterior shell surrounded be insulation throughout every panel. As a result you begin building a reputation about constructing a quiet comfortable home. The fact that panels come in four and four and sometimes by eight and four sections they have better opportunities to add to the building very tight structure. Building your customers' homes with SIPs can serve you about as much as 40 to 60 per cent of the cost of heating and cooling the home. Energy efficiency is obviously one of the great byproducts of this system which is fixed in documentation. And living in a house built from SIPs is just incredible. But energy efficiency is not the only way the home can save us money. Purely all truss work is eliminated. The air is conditioned in the home by mechanical ventilation.

Another engineered wood product can provide spectacular force support - engineered I-joist. Engineered I-joist is much stronger than a single strand board. Engineered I-joist is two strand boards between two strand pieces of wood. We can span much more space and even open fields of the whole house because we don't have to support the walls of the second floor of the home. Both SIPs and I-joists are environmentally friendly materials. Prefabrication technology of walls, floors and ceilings manufacture enables them to create smooth and strong surfaces. SIPs are not a new technology. The same principle was used in airplane construction where different modules were used in their design.

"An Excursion to a construction site"

A group of students is asking the construction manager the following questions:

Supervisor: Good morning, Mr. Black. I'm Ms …. the practice students' group supervisor. As your secretary told us we were to come for an excursion today at 10 a.m.

Construction manager: Sure, I remember about it! Hello, Ms. Petrova. Glad to see you, dear students. So, let us come over to that very site. Let me just warn my workers about your visit. I promise not to be long.

Supervisor: Oh, that's Okay.

Construction manager: My dear friends, everything is ready out there. Let's begin our conversation. I'm ready to answer all your questions.

Student 1: What is under construction here?

Construction manager: We are working here on the construction of a low-rise cafe building.

Student 2: By the way, how long does it take the builders to complete it?

Construction manager: You see we are using the Canadian framing construction technology and it guarantees the process to be completed in 3-4 months.

Supervisor: Could you tell us about the Canadian framing technology? Is it a modern technology?

Construction manager: It's my pleasure. In fact framing construction technology is not quite new. In the 60-ties and 70-ties Finnish houses were popular which were based on similar principles. But those houses were constructed out of timber and beams (logs). And today we use materials in a more rational way. Low-rise construction starts at a building materials plant, where structural parts are precast. So, this is a prefabricated construction technique in other words. Thus, precast parts, panels namely, are prefabricated in accordance with the planned structure and design and they are assembled on the construction site on the "Jigsaw Puzzle" principle.

Student 3: What materials do you use here?

Construction manager: Framing elements are made of structurally insulated panels (SIPs) or "sandwich" panels. SIP panels were first used in Canada and proved reliable building materials in severe climate conditions.

Student 4: What structural parts is SIP made up of?

Construction manager: SIP is composed of two oriented-strand boards which are interlaid with hard expanded polystyrene adhered at high pressure.

Student 5: What structural parts of a building are made of SIPs?

Construction manager: As a matter of fact, all main parts are made of SIPs: walls, floors and roofing structures. Each structural part is accommodated with assembly timber elements. The timber beam functions as a load-bearing framing structure as well.

Student 6: We can see a tower crane here. What other construction instruments are used? In what way are assembly operations carried out?

Construction manager: As I have already mentioned, precast structural panels or SIPs are delivered to the construction site where they are assembled on the prepared foundation. All parts are sealed by assembly foam and fastened by certain kinds of nailing or self-tapping screws. No complex instruments are needed to do assembly job. The job of the tower crane operator is simplified due to the standard size and shape of boards that are placed quite easily in their place. And fewer construction workers are required.

Student 1: What are the advantages of framing construction technology? And what about its disadvantages? Are there any?

Construction manager: Buildings constructed from precast SIPs are used in temperature range of -100°С to +80°С and are meant to withstand even the most severe climate conditions due to high degree of heat insulation property of panels. SIP structures are not inferior to their analogues built of concrete, bricks or wood, and sometimes they are even superior in their technical and physical properties. Framing construction is a fast assembly process when houses are erected within the period of 2-3 months. Light weight of SIPs calls for no necessity to lay a massive and deep foundation which results both in time and financial savings. Moreover, due to water repellant and moisture proof surfacing of SIPs it is possible to work on the building construction whole year round. As far as disadvantages concerned, some construction specialists note short service life of structures built from SIPs. But I would say that durability and long service life of framing construction depends on profound and reliable knowledge of framing construction technologies and it is also important to fulfill all the requirements of the technologies and use proper insulation materials when finishing the exterior and interior. One more relevant factor is using dry and fresh materials for load bearing units.

Supervisor: Are there any ecological advantages with SIPs application?

Construction manager: I dare say we could say that SIPs are environmentally friendly. They are composed of oriented strand boards (OSB) with expanded polystyrene layer between them. 90 per cent of an OSB makes wood chips and the rest 10 per cent are natural resins, fillers and hardeners, synthetic wax and boric acid salt which intensify the protective property of oriented-strand boards. Moreover, polystyrene is produced from the ecologically safe substance - sterol, which is environmentally friendly and has no detrimental effect on people. It is distinguished by hypoallergenic property, much of it being used in food packaging industry and kitchen utensils and tableware production. Thus, SIPs are often used in building structures of social and medical institutions (schools, hospitals etc).

Student 6: Could you tell us what kind of construction tradesmen are required at the construction site?

Construction manager: I suppose you would like to see some of our specialists at their work. So let us talk to some of them.

Construction manager: Assembly operations take the greater part of the work fulfilled by carpenters. Mr. Smith, could you tell a few words to the students about your job?

Carpenter: My job is to erect wood frames, fit joints, fix wood floors, stairs and window frames, asbestos sheeting and other wallboard. And here we just have to assemble SIPs to form structural elements.

Construction manager: After all assembly work has been completed the job of electricians and plumbers is needed.

Electrician: Doing my job I have to install, connect, test, and maintain building electrical systems which can also include lighting, climate control, anti-fire security and communications.

Plumber: Getting water into the house is called plumbing. Our job is to get the water out after it has been used. The first part of this problem is called water supply and the second one is called drainage or sewerage. We also install, maintain, and repair many different types of pipe systems. We generally install heating and cooling equipment as well.

Supervisor: Mr. Black, could you describe your own job of a construction manager, if you don't mind?

Construction manager: Sure, that's not a problem. My job is to plan, define, coordinate, and budget a wide variety of construction projects, including the building of all types of residential, commercial, and industrial structures. I have also to oversee that work is done well, safely, and according to the code. They schedule and plan all design and construction processes, including the selection, hiring and oversight of specialty trade contractors, such as carpentry, plumbing, or electrical, but I'm not usually responsible for any actual construction of the structure.

Supervisor: I believe, our students have learned quite a lot of valuable information today and we are very grateful to you for your time and your interesting talk.

All students: Thank you for your answers. Good-bye!
