Teacher: Everybody knows a human being cannot live without air, water and food. So we can say food plays one of the most important roles in our life.
Some people pay too much attention to their food. And we call them gourmets. The others on the contrary don't pay attention to the food they eat. They have very simple taste. Some people eat too much. And some on the contrary keep a diet. Having rephrased a famous proverb one can say «So many men, so many ways of eating». Guys, what is the topic of our lesson?

Students: Eating. Food.

Teacher: You are right. Every nation, every country has its own particular features. And Britain has them as well. And today we are going to talk about ways of eating in Britain. Also we are going to see films and compare British and Russian cuisine. Well, the theme of our today's lesson is Food in Britain.

Teacher: First of all let us revise some proverbs. I say in Russian, you say in English : Вкус пудинга узнаешь, попробовав его.
Students: The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
Students: You can't it your cake and have it.
Teacher:
Students: A spoon is dear when lunch time is near.
Students: A hungry belly has no ears.

Teacher:

Students: Hunger is the best sauce.

Teacher: Before we begin to talk about Food in Britain I'd like you to read the following sayings of some famous people and translate them:

"Coffee in England always tastes like a chemistry experiment".

(Agatha Christie)

"In England there are sixty different religions and only one sauce."

(Romenico Caraciola, Italian diplomat).

"If the British can survive their meals, they can survive anything."

(George Bernard Shaw, Irish playwright).

Teacher: Of course, it's a joke. But many a true word is spoken in jest. I would like you to write down these sayings.
We have read that visitors of Britain agree about one thing. What thing?
Students: British cooking is terrible.

Teacher: We can agree or disagree, but it's a fact. The British cuisine is considered to be not very tasty. The types of eating in Britain have changed a lot over the past twenty years for several reasons. For example, people have come to Britain from different parts of the world (especially from ex- colonies), bringing their favourite food with them and opening restaurants. The British themselves have travelled to other countries and brought new food back home. Nevertheless we can still find traditional food in Britain. What traditional British meals do you know?
Students: Roast beef, fish and chips, Scottish porridge, eggs and bacon.

Teacher: People eat on average 3 times a day. First meal is breakfast.
Guys, raise your hands, who has breakfast in the morning?
What do you usually have for breakfast?

Students: S1: I usually have…

S2: I do not have breakfast in the morning.

S3: As for me …….

Teacher: We have already known today's English breakfast is more likely to be nothing. What do you know about it?
Students: Some people in Britain like to go to work on an egg. It means they eat an egg for breakfast before going to work.

Teacher: One person in five has for breakfast only a cup of coffee. One person in ten has an English breakfast. Guys, what does it mean an English breakfast?
What does it consist of?

Students: It consists of bacon and eggs, sausage, mushrooms, baked beans , toast and tea.

You can see in the pictures how it looks like: fried eggs, bacon, fried toast, fried tomatoes. Everything is unhealthy, but delicious I suppose. And breakfast can include cornflakes , toast with butter or marmalade. In this case it is called a full English breakfast.

(Window on Britain)

Teacher: And I think seeing once is better than hearing twice. Seeing is believing. I'd like you to see a film about traditional English breakfast and home cooked food.

Teacher : As we have learned the Robinsons prefer to prepare their own food. But some people like convenience food. And what about you? Do you like convenience food? Do you sometime buy it?
Students:

S1: I like convenience food and especially pizza.

S2: And I do not like convenience food.
S3: As for me …..

Teacher : The British eat a lot of ready meals. You needn't prepare convenience food, you just only put it into oven or microwave oven. And it's ready.
As we have learned at 12 or I o'clock the British have lunch ,we call it "обед''.
For some people lunch is the biggest meal of the day. But some have only sandwiches for lunch, some crisps and some fruit. Most people in Britain have the main meal in the evening. It's usually at 6 or 7 o'clock.
What is a traditional British dinner?

Students: S1: As for me I do not have a sweet tooth.
S2: Frankly speaking I have a sweet tooth.
Ss: To tell the truth I…

Teacher: Is it good for our health to eat much sweet things?
Students: It is not good, it is unhealthy.
We can hurt our figure, teeth and skin.

Teacher: Potatoes are one of the most important or staple food in the British diet. They first were brought by the Spanish to Europe in the mid- sixteenth century. Today the British grow 6 million tonnes of potatoes every year and most people eat over a hundred kilograms a year. A favourite snack in Britain is the baked potato or "potato in its jacket'' with something on top like butter, cheese or beans.

-I am a vegetarian.

Teacher: In Britain the number of vegetarians has grown recently. About 5% of people in Britain don't eat meat, about 10% do not eat red meat and more people say they eat less meat now than in the past. The British are interested in healthy eating these days. Instead of red meat they prefer chicken and fresh fish. And they eat fruit and drink fruit juices twice more than in 1990s.
