План-конспект на тему «Достопримечательности Лондона» предназначен для учащихся 6 классов с углубленным изучением английского языка и проводится как резервный урок после ознакомления с биографией В. Шекспира по учебнику English VI, авторы: О.В. Афанасьева и И.В. Михеева.         Урок составлен с учетом особенностей восприятия материала учащимися и включает в себя такие виды деятельности как говорение, письмо, аудирование и визуализация.          На закрепление материала предлагаются как механические так и творческие упражнения, что помогает развивать навыки учащихся к самостоятельному изложению изученного материала.

London is the biggest city in Britain. More than seven million people live and work here. London is one of the most important cities in the world. It is a centre for business and for tourism. First name of London was Londinium, it was given by the Romans who came to England many years ago and built a town on the river Thames.

London in fact has three cities: the City of London, East End and west End and is 46 kilometers from North to South and 58 kilometers from East to West.

In London you can find some of the best theatres, cinemas and museums. There are many beautiful old churches in London too. There are about 10 thousand streets in London. Most of the streets are not very wide.

You can see many shops in London. Oxford Street is London's main shopping centre. You can buy shoes, clothes and toys in it. People from all over the world shop in Oxford Street.

Information for the group work

Westminster

The city of Westminster has always been known as the home of Court and Government. It lies at the heart of the capital. Coronation of almost every English monarch took place in Westminster.
Westminster's best known address is 10, Downing Street, home of the British Prime Minister.
No one can visit Westminster without catching sight of the great river Thames.

Houses of Parliament

The Houses of Parliament, also known as The Palace of Westminster has been the seat of the two Houses of Parliament called the House of Lords and the House of Commons since 1512. The Commons is made up of elected Members of Parliament (MP's) from different political parties. The party with the most MP's forms the Government of England, with its leader becoming Prime Minister of England. Palace of Westminster has been the place where all English Monarchs have been coronated. In 1512 a fire broke out and the palace stopped being a royal residence, but the Lords continued to meet there. The Palace of Westminster has been home to the English Parliament ever since.

About Big Ben

Big Ben is famous all over the world as it is a giant four faced clock in London, but in fact it is not the name of the clock at all. Big Ben is the name of the giant 14-tonne bell that hangs inside the clock tower and chimes every hour of every day in England. The huge bell was hung in 1858 and named after Sir Benjamin Hall, Chief Commissioner of Works. Big Ben is the largest clock in Britain and has kept exact time for the nation since May 1859.

About Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is the first home and office of the Royal family in England, and has been the home to British kings and queens since 1837. Originally it was a town house built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703. It was later bought by George III in 1762 and used as one of the royal family's London homes. It is also one of the world's most famous buildings and over 50,000 people visit the palace each year.

About Tower Bridge

London Tower Bridge was built in 1749. It is one of the many symbols of London. There are 27 bridges over the Thames and 8 tunnels under the river. The old London Bridge looked very strange. There were houses and shops on the bridge.

Tower of London

Many years ago the tower was a Royal Palace. It is the most visited castle in England. White Tower was built by William the Conqueror in about 1080. Later the tower was used as a prison. Many ravens live in the tower and special people take care of them as people believe as soon as the ravens live in the tower the monarchy will not fall down.

You can find many old and new beautiful parks in the city. One of the biggest parks in London is Regents Park. It is one of the most popular places of Londoners on hot summer days. It was opened to the people in 1849. There are many beautiful flowers and trees in the park. Boats carry passengers along the Regent's Canal to Regents Park Zoo, this is one of the most famous zoos in the world with more than 650 animals.

Interesting and historical facts about Greater London.

  • The name Big Ben is not the name of the clock tower itself, but the name of the Great Bell inside the tower.



  • London is the largest city in Europe.



  • The tallest building in London is the Canaray Wharf Tower



  • London was the first city in the world to have an underground railway system, known as the tube.



  • There are 3 small rooms inside the Marble Arch which were used as a police station until 1950.



  • London was called Londinium by the Romans. The smallest Police Station in London is inside the Wellington Arch.



  • Near the fire station on the north side of Heathrow Airport was where the British Army made their first measurement when they began their Ordnance Survey mapping of Britain.
