The sightseeings of London.

Aim: to develop students' reading and speaking skills working in pairs.

Objectives:

  • to activate students' vocabulary

  • Good morning, children! Glad to see you again. Today we are going to speak about the sights of London.

- Your home task was preparing some interesting facts about famous places of London.

1.TRAFALGAR SQUARE is a very famous square on New Year's Eve people gather to celebrate. In the middle of the square there is a very famous statue "Nelson's Column" which is over 170 feet high. The statue on the top is in memory of Lord Nelson who won the most famous sea battle at Trafalgar. Trafalgar Square has became famous as a point for all kinds of demonstrations, marches and political meetings.

NATIONAL GALLERY. The whole of the north side of Trafalgar Square is National Gallery. It houses one of the finest art collections in the world. It includes painting from British, Italian, Spanish, French, Dutch, Flemish and other famous schools. It has a priceless collection of paintings by the famous artists Van Gogh, Reuben's, Constable and any other painter .

THE TOWER OF LONDON is a very old building- nine hundred years old! In the early days of England the English kings lived in the Tower. Then it was a prison where many people died. It has a long and cruel history. It is not just one building. The tall building is the White Tower, the oldest part of the Tower of London. The Bloody Tower is near the river. It has a history of blood- the blood of men, women and even children. Now the Tower of London is a museum and many tourists from other countries come to see it.

TOWER BRIDGE was opened in 1894. It takes his name from the Tower of London. The hydraulic mechanism can raise and lower the bridge in about one and half minutes.

ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL. The city's greatest monument, St Paul's Cathedral was built by Christopher Wren between 1675 and 1710. The Cathedral is second in size only to St. Peter's in Rome. Between the two west towers rises the famous dome. It is 365 feet high. Christopher Wren died before the completion. He is buried there.

BUCKINGHAM PALACE is the official residents of Her Majesty the Queen and her family. It isn't open to the public. It has 600 hundred rooms, a swimming pool, a cinema, a garden, which is like a private park. In summer the Queen gives three garden parties for about 9000 guests. Palace ceremony of the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is a great tourist's attraction. It takes place at 11 a.m. and lasts half an hour.

THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT. The famous clock Big Ben stands near the Houses of Parliament. The country's leaders speak in the Houses of parliament. The man and women there are the voice of the British people. The houses of parliament stand beside the river Thames. You can go on a boat from Westminster and see London from the river. You can also see Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament from Westminster Bridge.

THE THAMES is not Long River. It is three hundred and thirty kilometers long and it flows into the sea. The English people call it "the Father of London". London began on the Thames. When we go in a ship up the Thames we pass under London Bridge, The Tower Bridge and others. There is a museum of the old ships on the Thames. One of this ships, the "Discovery", went to the South Pole from 1901-1904.

BIG BEN. It is a big bell. It weighs 13 720 kilograms.The clock has four faces and five big bells. The biggest bell is known as Big Ben. The bell is named after Sir Benjamin Hall; the first commissioner (уполномочен-ный) of works when the Houses of Parliament were rebuilt (in 1850).He was a tall men, whose nickname was Big Ben. So people know the clock as Big Ben.

HYDE PARK covers an area of 360 acres. Beneath Hyde Park there is a car park for 500 cars and also a tube station. On the North of Hyde Park there is a famous place called "Speaker's corner" where only on Sundays, any person can talk on any subject. One of the most famous speakers there is Lord Soper who is politician

There are many offices, firms and banks in this part of London. The City of London is the financial centre of the United Kingdom. The West End is the centre of London. They are, for example, the Houses of Par­liament with Big Ben. It is interesting that the clock "Big Ben" came into serv­ice in 1859. Big Ben is the biggest clock bell in Britain. It weighs 13.5 tons. THE TOWER OF LONDON is a very old building- nine hundred years old! Then it was a prison where many people died. Now it is a museum. The other interesting place is West­minster Abbey, which was founded in 1050. It is situated in the centre of Lon­don. Many great Englishmen were buried in the Abbey: Newton, Darwin and others. The official London residence of the Queen is Buckingham Palace. It was built in the 18th century.There are many nice squares in Lon­don. Trafalgar Square is one of them and it is in the centre of the West End. One can see a statue of Lord Nelson in the middle of this square. There are many museums, libraries and galleries in London. The Tate Gallery is one of the well-known galleries in Lon­don. Henry Tate was a sugar manufac­turer. He was fond of paintings and col­lected many pictures. The British Museum is a very interest­ing place in London. It was founded in 1753. The library of this museum has a lot of books. The East End of London is the district for working people. There are many fac­tories, workshops and docks there. There are many cars and buses in Lon­don. There is the Tube (the Under­ground) in London, too. It is a good one. One can say that the City is the money of London, the West End is the goods of London and the East End is the hands of London.
