A TOUR AROUND THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING COUNTIES (10 класс)

I'm Scotland. I'm a country of great variety with my own unique character and strong traditions. I'm a beautiful country famous for my landscapes and large lakes. Everybody knows about a mysterious Lock Ness Monster. Maybe it really lives here?

I'm famous for my art festivals, holidays, sport games and of course my national kilts and bagpipes. I'm the birthplace of a world-known poet Robert Burns. Every year on the 25th of January Scottish people celebrate his birthday. I'd like to recite one of his poem about me.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here.

My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer,

A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe-

My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go!

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,

The birthplace of valour, the country of the worth!

Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,

The hills of the Highlands for ever I love,

Farewell to the mountains high cover'd with snow,

Farewell to the straths and green valleys below,

Farewell to the forests and wild-hinging woods,

Farewell to the torrents and long-pouring woods!

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here.

My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer,

A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe-

My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go!

My capital is Edinburgh. It's a busy modern city, but history is everywhere. I've got the highest mountain in Great Britain - Ben Nevis. My symbol is a thistle. I'm divided into Highlands and Lowlands. Glasgow is my largest and busiest town. Glasgow and Edinburgh are my great centres. Glasgow is the heart of industry. It's a centre of business and trade. It's beautiful and ugly with its large port and busy streets. The Edinburgh military tattoo (шоу военной музыки) takes place every August and September and know all over the world. At the same time you can go to the famous Edinburgh festival. The festival started in 1947. One of the best known monuments is a monument to a dog belonged to John Gray. When he died Bobby lived near his grave for twenty-six years. He has become a symbol of devotion. Come to my place and enjoy the views of my castles and Palaces. I'm worth visiting.

Wales. I'm a small country but there is no other part of the British Isles where national spirit is stronger, national pride more intense than in my place. My capital is Cardiff. My flag shows a dragon Saint David, patron saint converted me to Christianity and established the Welsh church. My symbol is a daffodil. I'm famous for my annual festival of music and poetry. It has been held early in August since the 12th century. It attracts Welsh people from all over the world. The most impressive ceremony of the festival is the crowning of the Bard. A crown of golden oak leaves is placed on the head of the best poet. Come to my place and enjoy the views of my valleys and mountains. I'm worth visiting.

I'm Northern Ireland. There is an old Irish saying that I must be the cleanest place in the world, because God washes me every day. I'm also called the "Emerald Isle" because of my beautiful green fields.

Everybody knows that my national emblem is a shamrock. Inside the shamrock there is a red hand. Why is it here? The legend tells us that 3000 years ago two Vikings chiefs went with their men in big boats to my place. The first men to touch my land would be king. Then one of the chiefs cut off his right hand and threw it. So he was the first and he became the king of my land.

My capital is Belfast. The 17th of March is my national holiday St. Patrick's Day. St. Patrick was a man who had wonderful power. He cleared me snakes. People wanted to thank him and made him saint. In 1801 I become part of the United Kingdom. Welcome to my place. I'm worth seeing.

I'm England.

Welcome to the capital Great Britain. I'm your guide and I'm going to tell you many interesting things about London. London is one of the largest cities in the world. About 7 million people live here. London's most famous sights are Tower Bridge, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square and St. Paul's Cathedral. We start from Trafalgar Square, the main square where a number of famous buildings and monuments, including the National Gallery and Nelson's Column are situated. The square is popular with visitors, who come to relax by the fountains there or to feed pigeons Nelson's column is a high column nearly 185 feet with a stature of Admiral Nelson who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

To the left of us you can see the National Gallery. It has got a fine collection of European paintings. It was begun in 184 when 38 pictures were bought by the Government. The collection contains pictures of all the European schools of paintings between the 13th and early 20th century. There are no pictures by living artists. Some pictures are bought by the Gallery, some are given by rich people and some are lent.

It's the place where presidents, kings and politicians go to meet the Queen. About 700 people work in the Palace.

It's the perfect way to spend the whole day in the country without leaving London Hyde Park is famous for its outdoor entertainments and its Speaker's Corner.

-Can we listen to the speakers at the Speaker's Corner.

-Yes, you can ask a speaker some difficult questions if you like. In front of you, you can see the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. It's the name of the huge clock-bell on the top of Big Ben. It's the biggest one in Britain. You hear it every hour. It has a deep tone and you can hear it on the radio. "This is the BBC. The time is six o'clock," And then you hear the deep boom of Big Ban six times.

-Why was the clock bell nicknamed Big Ben?

- The clock bell was called Big Ben after Sir Benjamin Hall. Benjamin was a very tall man, whose name was Big Ben. He looked after the building of the clock.

In a moment you will see Westminster Abbey. Nearly all kings and queens of Britain were clowned and buried here. It's a fine Gothic building in the centre of London just opposite the Houses of Parliament. It's the most important and famous of all historic buildings in Britain. Many great English scientists lie buried here, among them Newton and Darwin.

-Many great English scientists, poets and writers are buried there, aren't they?

-Yes, you are right.

-Now we are crossing Tower Bridge over the river Thames. From here you can see the Tower of London. It was a fortress, a royal palace and later a prison. The Tower is very old. It has a long and cruel history. It's not just one building. The tall building is the White Tower, the oldest part of the Tower of London. The bloody Tower is near the river. It has a history of blood- the blood of men, women and even children. Now the King and the Queen don't live here. When the Queen is in London, she stays in Buckingham Palace.

-I've heard a legend about the ravens.

At the airport.

A TOUR AROUND THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING COUNTIES (10 класс)

I'm America. There are fifty states. Two of this states, Alaska and Hawaii , are not connected to the other states. You can see it on this map. I'm washed by the Pacific Ocean in the west, by the Atlantic Ocean in the east, by the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico in the south. In the north are Great Lakes.

I'm a large country with many naturals wonders. I've almost every kind of weather. Also, it has many kinds of land - rocky coasts, dry empty deserts, big rivers, wide plains and grasslands, lakes of all sizes, high mountains, great forests, sunny beaches, lands of endless winter.

More than 250 million people live in. But the country is very big, so there is still a lot of open space and natural scenery outside the cities. Americans have tried to save many of the most beautiful wild areas of the United States. The Grand Canyon and Yellowstone are among the most famous.

Many rivers cross me. But the greatest is the mighty Mississippi. Native Americans called it "the father of water". It begins quietly in the north of the country and ends in the Gulf of Mexico, nearly four thousand miles (6400 km) away. On its journey to the sea, the Mississippi travels through several states, and becomes larger and more powerful, it brings water to farmlands. And the Mississippi has been an important waterway since early times, when native Americans travelled on the river in canoes. Among other big rivers are the Colorado and the Missouri. The Colorado River rises in the Rocky Mountains or the Rockies that stretch from Alaska down almost is the south of the country. Another big mountains chain is the Appalachians in the east also running from north to south.

The Grand Canyon is one of America's main tourist attractions. It is so big that you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty.

I'm a young country. Its written history is only a few hundred years old. Sometimes , in fact, called the "New World". Over the last four hundred years millions of people have come to start a new life in this "New World". Americans are not afraid of new ideas. They built the first skyscrapers and they put the first man on the moon. They like to be modern. They like exciting, modern cities, new houses, and new cars. At the same time, Americans love old things. They like to visit historical houses and museums. They build old pioneer houses and remember the days of the "Wild West". Americans are interested in old traditions, but they are good at making new traditions too. The people of the United States are mixture of many different nationalities. I like a melting pot for people. In the past, people from many different European countries came to and made one country out of many. These different people brought to their new land a wonderful mixture of customs and traditions. The Germans brought Christmas trees. The Irish brought St. Patrick's Day celebrations. The Scots brought Halloween.
